Mike Huckabee On Sarah Palin: Katie Couric Was "Extraordinarily Gentle" With Her

Unlike John McCain's daughter Meghan, former GOP Presidential candidate Mike Huckabee doesn't have a policy against talking about Sarah Palin. In an interview with A.J. Jacobs from Esquire released Tuesday, Huckabee refused to join Palin's cabal against Katie Couric, saying the anchor was "extraordinarily gentle, even helpful" to the candidate. I ask him if she was treated fairly by the media. "There were a lot of unfair things. Sexist things that would never have been asked of a male candidate." He pauses. "Now I must say I did not think that either the Charlie Gibson interview or the Katie Couric interviews were unfair. In fact, if anything, Katie Couric was extraordinarily gentle, even helpful. [Palin] just...I don't know what happened. I can't explain it. It was not a good interview. I'm being charitable."

He pauses. "I think it was overpreparation. She'd been hammered by McCain's aides, 'Say this, don't say that.' "

Huckabee has met Palin a few times and talked to her backstage at the Republican National Convention.

"Did you give her any advice?"

"I didn't figure that she was shopping for my advice."

"But she sure was shopping."

"Yeah," chuckles Huckabee. Then stays quiet. I set him up for an easy spike, but he holds his tongue.

Did the media pile on Sarah Palin? Absolutely.
Was the media focus on her children disgraceful? Absolutely.
But the idea that KATIE COURIC was a tough questioner is the most pathetic line of argument I've ever heard from her defenders.
Tim Russert would have DESTROYED Sarah Palin. Not metaphorically: By his second question, Sarah Palin would have spontaneously exploded from confusion.
If you aren't smart enough to go head-to-head against Katie Couric, you don't belong anywhere near the Oval Office.

I would have loved to see Tim Russert interview Sarah Palin. What a delicious sight that would have been.

The silliest part of the Huckabee quote was him saying "It was not a good interview". As if Palin is normally an articulate intellectual, but she just happened to have an off day with Couric.

The fact is, the interview was just fine. It showed the world quite concisely exactly what Sarah Palin brought to the table in terms of presidential qualifications. Namely "not even close".

Nothing we have seen or heard from her SINCE the Couric interview has given anyone any reason to amend their opinion of Palin that was established BY the Couric interview.

Palin and her supporters claim that the media was being sexist toward her. She is the one who set up the sexist issue right straight from the beginning when she talked about being a "Hockey Mom" and telling the "Lipstick" joke at the convention. Apparently Palin tried to use her gender to endear herself to the Conservative base, but when the media picke up on it, she claimed sexism. As she found out very quickly, you can't have your bacon and eat it too.

Aren't the points in this discussion moot? She is not all there. She was out of her league. She should have declined the nomination for many reasons, which would have been the honest thing to do. What was made perfectly evident was, she does not have an honest bone in her body. She is not honest with herself. Malarky does not substitute for intelligence in the major league, especially after Bush fooled the country twice.
