I Like ItI Don’t Like It

Tuesday night, President-elect Barack Obama sat down with some prominent conservative authors for dinner. Wednesday, Politico's Michael Calderone reports, he's paying a visit to the liberal side of the commentariat:

The group included the Washington Post's E.J. Dionne and Eugene Robinson, the Wall Street Journal's Gerry Seib, National Journal's Ron Brownstein, the New York Times Frank Rich and Maureen Dowd, and MSNBC's Rachel Maddow, among others.

Today's meeting was held at the transition headquarters, and unlike dinner at George Will's house, I'm told there weren't refreshments. But similar to last night's, the discussion was off the record.

The Atlantic's Andrew Sullivan, one of the meeting attendees, shares some thoughts:

Lots of emails from readers asking about the chat with the president-elect this morning. It was totally off the record and I'm a stickler for those rules. I can say, however, the following: it's hard to express the relief I feel that this man will be the president soon. I realize that's what I feel above all else: relief.

I may disagree with him at times, and criticize him at times, but his great gift is showing that he does not expect people to change their convictions in order to find common areas of agreement. That's the challenge he's presenting all of us with, wherever we come from ideologically. The challenge is as real for a Krugman as for a Kristol, for Rick Warren as well as Gene Robinson.

Meanwhile, Johnathan Chait points out that even before the new meeting was announced, liberals weren't upset:

They know that Obama understands far more about policy than any of his right-wing dinner companions, is used to being exposed to opposing ideas, and won't come out of that dinner telling his staff, "Hey, did you know we cut half the capital gains tax and raise more revenue?"

No reason for any of this to be off the record...FESS UP, media hacks, on both ends of the political spectrum.

Jesus Christ ya'll...Rachel Maddow! Maddow is not to be taken seriously! Why? Because she herself is not taking herself serious when delivering the news!. She is not only feather-light, she is very very full of herself on MSNBC and she breaks into giggles like as if she is the best out there...she is the most annoying newscaster I've ever seen in my life. And she and Keith Olberman are only good for liberal media. That's who they are. Rachel Maddow is only right for the libs only. She is not right for the rest of America. She is Michelle Malkin of the liberal media. What do you think about that?

that's all you have to say? what do you have to say about Rachel Maddow? I don't hate her, I just think she is soooooo one-sided, a liberal media on the extreme left -- just like Stephanie Miller (radio host) and Keith Olberman. They are one-sided and only doing more damage to the Obama/democrats than doing good to rest of America...that kind of journalist is not right for this country...Maddow makes the others like Joy Behar, Bill Maher, and even Jack Cafferty of CNN look like Popes...relax...she is just Rachel Maddow...her stories and opinions will never be taken seriously because she will never be balanced...if you are her fan, good for you.

Here, let me pay you: here's my 30 second for you -- read it slowly....Maddow giggles...she should be more serious and (if possible) be a little more balanced...but that is impossible. to you she is great, to others she is wrong for America. her pov is only suitable for liberals on the extreme left...no? I know someone who is a big Michelle Malkin's fan...read Malkin's stuff and watch Maddow on MSNBC! One is extreme left and the other is extreme right -- but hand downs, Malkin is way smarter and sharper and more intelligent and the best investigative reporter out there...Maddow...is trying too hard to please liberals and pleasing them all the way! good for her. good for you

Having an open mind and finding common ground is what I admire about Obama. He'll give everyone a voice and opportunity to make you case. People who do this are true leaders you may not always agree with their decisions but you know you were heard and your ideas were considered what more can we ask for.

The combination of intelligence, self-assurance and humility in our president is going to take a little getting used to.

George W. Shrub had all but three of those characteristics.

It is so true....he sounds and looks level headed...tho the economy needs a bullish Obama. Barack Obama has delivered blunt economic talk lately. If Washington doesn't act, he warns, this recession could "linger for years"; 4 million people could be thrown out of work in 2009; trillion-dollar deficits are likely "for years to come"; America could "lose a generation of potential and promise." Bam! What's happened to "Yes, we can"?

I suppose that "Yes, we can," doesn't mean that we necessarily *will;* Obama's just giving the relatively straight consequences of what will happen if we *don't.*

Favorite    Flag as abusive Posted 01:39 AM on 01/15/2009

Intellectuals on both the right and left are virtually unanamious in the conviction that the economic policies that have brought us to this despicable position in world affairs is sound policy. The only problem has been the managers and management system. Both political propaganda polls espouse the doctrine of free trade even as it destroys our middle class and way of life. Free trade is more valued than a free democratic society. Otherwise, both groups would not be espousing a trading system that has brought down to poverity the once most powerful country in the world.

Rachel has put some passion, a genuine, and inquisitive personality into the news.
She is a breath of fresh air compared to some of the "good 'ole boys" political anchors who come off as arrogant, tired, and so very routine.
Rachel and Keith are magic and I appreciate both--they are very savvy and entertaining while factual--every political rock is overtturned and the snakes are exposed!

I imagine the OP's concern with a gay agenda is akin to a evangelical agenda whereas the platform of News is being turned into a mouthpiece of subjective journalism slanted to a focus on a personal goal of the broadcaster. In this case, it would be gay rights.

Dowd is a terrific writer. She won the Pulitzer Prize in 1999. You may not like her sharp elbows, but she's an undeniable talent.

And I've personally liked Sullivean's commentary over the years, esp. his spirited defense of Obama from Christopher Hitchens on the Tim Russert show last summer.

Dowd's appraisal of President Clinton and his feminist supporters during the Lewinsky scandal led to her being criticized by some liberals, and more recently her strong criticism of President Bush and the war in Iraq have prompted conservatives to criticize her.[citation needed]

Shortly after she won her Pulitzer, a New York Press article analyzed Dowd's columns and concluded that Dowd appears to do little reporting and tends to "dumb down" her subject matter by viewing it through the lens of pop culture.[15] A 2002 Weekly Standard article explored Dowd's alleged narcissism and tendency to reduce "political phenomena ... to caricatures of the personalities involved."

In 2003, Dowd was accused by Spinsanity.com[16] and James Taranto of inserting ellipses to change a quotation's intended meaning.[17]

Her work was recently satirized by Justin E. H. Smith in an article for 3 Quarks Daily.

She has repeatedly been criticized by Bob Somerby of The Daily Howler for trivializing and making baseless accusations about Democratic politicians. For example, on January 31, 2007, the Howler criticized her for trivializing the campaigns of female politicians, and in particular that of Hillary Clinton.[18]
