I Like ItI Don’t Like It

Tuesday night, President-elect Barack Obama sat down with some prominent conservative authors for dinner. Wednesday, Politico's Michael Calderone reports, he's paying a visit to the liberal side of the commentariat:

The group included the Washington Post's E.J. Dionne and Eugene Robinson, the Wall Street Journal's Gerry Seib, National Journal's Ron Brownstein, the New York Times Frank Rich and Maureen Dowd, and MSNBC's Rachel Maddow, among others.

Today's meeting was held at the transition headquarters, and unlike dinner at George Will's house, I'm told there weren't refreshments. But similar to last night's, the discussion was off the record.

The Atlantic's Andrew Sullivan, one of the meeting attendees, shares some thoughts:

Lots of emails from readers asking about the chat with the president-elect this morning. It was totally off the record and I'm a stickler for those rules. I can say, however, the following: it's hard to express the relief I feel that this man will be the president soon. I realize that's what I feel above all else: relief.

I may disagree with him at times, and criticize him at times, but his great gift is showing that he does not expect people to change their convictions in order to find common areas of agreement. That's the challenge he's presenting all of us with, wherever we come from ideologically. The challenge is as real for a Krugman as for a Kristol, for Rick Warren as well as Gene Robinson.

Meanwhile, Johnathan Chait points out that even before the new meeting was announced, liberals weren't upset:

They know that Obama understands far more about policy than any of his right-wing dinner companions, is used to being exposed to opposing ideas, and won't come out of that dinner telling his staff, "Hey, did you know we cut half the capital gains tax and raise more revenue?"

He fought and won to take away our right to vote in the democratic primary.

He bought superdelgates with hundreds of thousands of dollars cash under the table.

The media refuses to report any facts that don’t put him in a positive light.

Fixed elections. Government corruption. Politically controlled media.

Is this the Soviet Union???

Americans better fight hard or else we will never re-gain our democracy.

If “zero-qualifications” Obama can do it, every other political hack/thug in the country will be doing it next time.

America’s democracy is DEAD!

ok, just start with your first point - WHAT???? Please tell me when and how he fought and won to take away our right to vote in the democratic primary?

OK, my state has been having caucuses but I voted in my state caucus. Very proudly I might add for Barack Hussein Obama. WTF are you talking about?

Were you sleeping on May 31, 2008??? When the Obama controlled DNC refused to allow voters from FL and MI from fully being counted in the primary. Clinton fought on our behalf. She fought to defend our right to vote. But thug Obama refused to let us count. He refused to let us re-vote. He refused to allow us our right to a fair election.

He's a crook.

Bush STOLE it in 2000.
Obama BOUGHT it in 2008.

Back away from your computer and

step out of the secluded cabin in the woods you reside in.

It's more than obvious where your objection lies

and it doesn't have a thing to do with ability.

Take your backward thinking

and stick it in the dark areas of your candidate of choice's anatomy.

Both sides will have a tough time keeping up with Obama.

It's not a matter of smarts, although he certainly has them. It's a matter of his world view. He seems to believe he has something to learn from both sides and at the very least, he has the rare wisdom to know he has nothing to loose by listening. Not to mention, the confidence to know that in the end he's the boss.

Most on both sides are busy protecting their own causes and ideologies. The left screams he's too right, the right screams he's too left, but everytime he extends his hand he makes a fan. It's disarming to all. We've not seen it before, not quite like this, and he's got us flummoxed.

He will not be perfect, he's already prooved that. But if you don't understand we're on a whole new tradjectory with this guy, you are one of those destined to always be left two, or many more, steps behind.

Good assessment.

Favorite    Flag as abusive Posted 09:19 PM on 01/14/2009

Agreed. Most of us who voted for Obama did so because he's smart, articulate, stated why he wants to be President (unlike McCain and Hillary) and because we want change. He embraced a new way of both raising cash for his initiatives while simultaneously involving the usually complacent younger generation at the grassroots level. We now see how he will continue the successful use of the Internet (YouTube, social networks, etc.) to maintain involvement of his grassroots supporters to pressure their DC representatives to support his initiatives. We appreciate that he is involving not just traditional political ideologues in discussions, but also media critics AND regular folk - to find the common ground to GET THINGS DONE. That's what we wanted! He is breaking the mold of traditional politics and media interaction. I hope that this process identifies the stars, thinkers and experienced citizens in our country who can be nurtured and encouraged to step up and replace the traditional pompous doofs that populate our government. Perhaps it's a whole new paradigm, if that's the right word. In either case, it's so damned refreshing. I hope everyone participates in the conversation. You don't have to agree and may not always agree with the outcome. But hopefully we'll be more informed and involved than just watching the same old cable news show that spice up news with graphics, rhetoric, controversy and "news" personalities and reinforce our comfortable positions rather than motivate us to participate and act.

Rachel is a little more cool-headed. I love Keith, but he can get carried away sometimes. I am thankful to have had him two years ago when NO ONE else was saying what had to be said. True, he got a little bit of an ego and sometimes even I think he goes overboard. But I will be forever thankful to him saving my sanity when I thought the USA had gone mad.

It's best to keep these meetings small enough so everyone can feel they are free to speak up. That means not everyone can be at every meeting.

Sun-Times columnist Carol Marin: Her opinion is that when it comes to the president-elect, journalists are "deferential, eager to please, prepared to keep a careful distance":

She says "The Obama news conferences tell that story, making one yearn for the return of the always-irritating Sam Donaldson to awaken the slumbering press to the notion that decorum isn't all it's cracked up to be.

The press corps, most of us, don't even bother raising our hands any more to ask questions because Obama always has before him a list of correspondents who've been advised they will be called upon that day."

Asked James Taranto, "Can you imagine the howls of outrage if President Bush had done that?"

Wrong.

No one should wish for the Donaldson days. Stop it now. Did you see the Bush press conference the other day? At the end, when Bush walked out, TWO hand claps were heard. TWO. The majority of the press is looking forward to accountability and facts, real facts versus the BS they've been spoon fed the last 8 years.

It's called CHANGE, and the majority of this nation voted for it. Get over it.

I don't think anyone would argue that George Will is a liberal, and certainly HuffPo is not saying that (see below) and nor is Obama, who had dinner with him as part of a group of conservatives last night, before meeting today with a group of liberals that didn't include him.

This I do understand. This country cannot wait for change. It will not survive without change. And no change could possibly be worse than what GWB has set us up for. You need to understand as well. Our near future is not on our collective wish list. The rest of our lives will be spent paying to try to fix this mess. And a mess it is.

I don't even believe our jails are large enough to hold all the R* criminals.

How do we fix this? How? Everything I have was made in China. And I don't trust anybody (but always have).

Okay first order of business:

We were talking last meeting about possible gifts for Ms. Palin

for her efforts in helping us to elect our candidate of choice (That One) for President.

There were lots of suggestions but I believe we can do better.

So far the list of suggestions are as follows:
1. $25.00 gift certificate to Planned Parenthood for services of choice
2. A memorable Youtube video produced of some of her best moments on the campaign trail (grin)
3. A private tutor for assisting her daughter in acquiring a high school diploma

Other suggestions??

When asked what they had for dinner, he kind of laughed and said that he couldn't remember. But he did grin from ear to ear the whole time he was talking about the evening and he emphasized Obama's intelligence and charm. There is no doubt that meeting Obama had an impact on these people.
