I Like ItI Don’t Like It

Tuesday night, President-elect Barack Obama sat down with some prominent conservative authors for dinner. Wednesday, Politico's Michael Calderone reports, he's paying a visit to the liberal side of the commentariat:

The group included the Washington Post's E.J. Dionne and Eugene Robinson, the Wall Street Journal's Gerry Seib, National Journal's Ron Brownstein, the New York Times Frank Rich and Maureen Dowd, and MSNBC's Rachel Maddow, among others.

Today's meeting was held at the transition headquarters, and unlike dinner at George Will's house, I'm told there weren't refreshments. But similar to last night's, the discussion was off the record.

The Atlantic's Andrew Sullivan, one of the meeting attendees, shares some thoughts:

Lots of emails from readers asking about the chat with the president-elect this morning. It was totally off the record and I'm a stickler for those rules. I can say, however, the following: it's hard to express the relief I feel that this man will be the president soon. I realize that's what I feel above all else: relief.

I may disagree with him at times, and criticize him at times, but his great gift is showing that he does not expect people to change their convictions in order to find common areas of agreement. That's the challenge he's presenting all of us with, wherever we come from ideologically. The challenge is as real for a Krugman as for a Kristol, for Rick Warren as well as Gene Robinson.

Meanwhile, Johnathan Chait points out that even before the new meeting was announced, liberals weren't upset:

They know that Obama understands far more about policy than any of his right-wing dinner companions, is used to being exposed to opposing ideas, and won't come out of that dinner telling his staff, "Hey, did you know we cut half the capital gains tax and raise more revenue?"

I love that Maddow was invited and Keith wasn't. She's a scholar--he's a bit of a blowhard. You can always seem him smacking his lips afterhe let's go one of those overly-alliterative phrases.

How dare you, sir or madam? How DARE you? That is a calumny about Mr. Olbermann, sir or madam, up which I will not put.

I love KO. He's comedy gold and the only person on the air who spoke out against the atrocities Bush was perpetrating for quite a long time before anyone else had the cajones to. And few comedians can make me fall out of my chair like Keith can.

I'm surprised no one is mentioning Frank Rich which I consider the best liberal columnist of our time. Rich is a fantastic writer and cuts to the quick of what is wrong with raging right wing ideology. He just has a knack of chronically the human condition in America like no other writer IMHO.

This is why the American people want PE Obama to succeed. His heart is pure. He isn't trying to "force" or "convince" anyone to change their minds. He is asking for solutions and/or ideas. However, we know the republicans don't have ANY. Go PE Obama!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

A decent human being who has begun to take care of the elderly poor who most do not see. An extra soc sec payment for them!

A downpayment on Healthcare by insuring 4 million kids. The House passed it today by increasing the tax on cigarettes by 70 cents! The senate had better pass it too!

Go OBAMA! YES WE CAN!

I have not seen or heard any of the details of what was talked about at either of these meetings - Andrew Sullivan has a post entitled "Sorry, No Details" saying "It was totally off the record and I'm a stickler for those rules". Rachel Maddow has a substitute on her Air America show.

Just wondering if anyone else in attendance has let anything slip?

It would be nice to know but if we did you can bet these kinds of meetings of the minds will stop. I take comfort in knowing we have a guy who actively seeks input from others.

Good point, I certainly believe these meetings are an excellent venue and am not sure what the rules are - typically off the record means you can talk in general about the topics discussed but not quote anyone.

Favorite    Flag as abusive Posted 06:25 PM on 01/14/2009

I can guess what he told them. I'll give you access, but in turn you don't start acting like mouthpieces for your respective parties. As soon as you start turning into disingenuous regurgitators of talking points, your access is cut off.

Can you picture Churchill, Agustus or Jefferson doing this?

Betrays an insecurity, and a lack of gravitas.

Yes I can, and they did. That's what made them successful. Jefferson and Adams relationship is legendary and they were complete opposites. Read some of our history, it's pretty fascinating and you won't look so foolish around others who have bothered to do so.

Are you out of your mind? I was just thinking how wonderful it was to have a man, so secure, so intelligent that he would sit down and develop a relationship with the 4th estate and treat them as partners in a democracy, and as part of the solutions we need in the coming years. You unbelievably turn it into an act of insecurity. amazing. Sadly this will probably be the Republican talking point about it tomorrow.
