Ryan Seacrest High-Fives Blind Contestant

Huffington Post   First Posted: 2/14/09 Updated: 5/25/11

"American Idol" contestant Scott Macintrye, 23, may be blind, but that didn't stop Ryan Seacrest from trying to given him a high five.

Macintyre plays the piano, went to college at 14 and ballroom dances, and he even sung his way to a golden ticket to Hollywood. After Scott emerged from his audition and hugged his family, Ryan held up his right hand for a high-five.

Seacrest ended up reaching down and taking Scott's hand after his gesture hung midair.

In all honesty, I think Ryan was flabbergasted that Scott got the golden ticket. If Scott were sighted he would have never made the cut - none of the judges had the chutzpah to say as much. Ryan was in shock and just going through the motions when he offered the high-five to Scott and once Ryan realized what he was doing, he handled himself very professionally. Don't agree with me? Close your eyes and listen to Scott's audition...not that impressive.

Now, will Joel McHale call him on this or give him a pass? C'mon Joel, your integrity is on the line.

Was this a live show? No? Well then kudos for leaving it in. They could have edited it out but they didn't.

Maybe ppl will learn to think a bit harder when interacting with 'differently abled'.

When I was 20 I 'learnt' that when chatting to someone in a wheel chair you should squat down to their eye level. Otherwise they get a sore neck from looking up all day. And it's polite.

Seacrest........ making EVERY moment awkward.

It's funny. It's awkward. It's probably not the worst thing to happen to Scott. It's American Idol. Moving right along....

i thought Ryan handled that great! he realized it was an honest mistake and didn't even flinch! VERY professional. he verbally communicated that he was giving him a high five and the guy was ready to give him one back. i found this all to be very classy. give the guy a break folks! you try being on camera!

Some of the stuff on this show is just made up.

Idol scandal. Blind contestant is actually sighted, just doesn't like seacrest.

i commend the people (family) around him.. good luck Scott. god bless.

who cares? cut the guy some slack. i'm sure he's so used to high-fiving people that he just did it without realizing. you really mean to tell me that all these people criticizing seacrest on here have never made an awkward mistake? please. grow up.

ugh Ryan is a joke and so are these "idols'!
01:47 AM on 01/15/2009
Ryan needs to reduce his omnipresence and get some time to pay attention to what going on around him
12:59 AM on 01/15/2009
A further distaste is when Ryan practically condescends in saying " well, i'm giving you a high five..." almost sarcastically as if it were Scott's fault for not knowing, then grabs Scott MacIntyre's hand and insultingly places it in the high five position to do so, a direct shot from Ryan's ego-centric attempt to save face. Embarrassing? Yes, but not for Scott, and can we quit calling him "the blind guy"?

I didn't feel it was condescending, sorry. I thought he was a little embarrassed at his mistake and tried to make it right - though picking up Scott's wrist was a bit much.
04:50 PM on 01/15/2009
yeah, i had to throw the word "practically" in there cuz Ryan was talking to himself after all

I like Scott and think he'll do well on Idol. It's to his credit that Ryan Seacrest forgot he was blind and tried to high 5 him.
