Miles J. Zaremski: Schakowsky Conducts Town Hall Meeting on Health Care
With grace and style, United States House of Representatives Congresswoman Janice Schakowsky (D-9th) conducted her town hall meeting in a Skokie, Illinois high school...

The following is from Wikipedia regarding Schakowsky:
"On March 11, 2004, Schakowsky's husband, lobbyist Robert Creamer, the executive director of the Illinois Public Action Fund, was indicted in federal court on 16 counts of bank fraud involving three alleged check-kiting schemes in the mid-1990s, leading several banks to experience shortfalls of at least $2.3 million[8]. "He is innocent," Schakowsky said in a statement [9]. In August 2005, Creamer pleaded guilty to one count of failure to collect withholding tax, and bank fraud for writing checks with insufficient funds. All of the money was repaid. According to USA Today Congresswoman "Schakowsky has not been accused of any wrongdoing." [1] Schakowsky served on the organization's board during the time the crimes occurred [10] and Schakowsky signed the IRS filings along with her husband[9]. "
Hizzhonor's Olympics ambitions might prompt him to actually back a goo-goo slate including Quinn for Gov and Jan for the Senate. Now that would be some real change to believe in.
I see a lot of enthusiastic support here for Rep. Janice Schakowsky (D-Ill.) running for Roland Burris's U. S. Senate seat in 2010.
How seriously do you think the unfortunate situation surrounding her husband, Robert Creamer (and the fact that Janice defended him despite his conviction for wrong-doing and subsequent imprisonment), will affect her chances for being elected?
Although Janice Schakowsky appears to have a lot going for her in terms of her own abilities - it sounds like this "little problem" with her husband could end up being a major impediment to her chances of being elected to serve Illinois in the United States Senate - especially now that Illinois is in the national dog-house for being the leading standard-bearer for unethical political behavior.
What do the rest of you think?
I live in Illinois - and that pesky husband problem will re-surface! She's already handicapped by this - better to keep a low profile in her current position than have to go on Hardball or Countdown to defend her husband on a national stage!
Really? Under that logic, Hillary doesn't belong in the Senate either.
I love what she's done, but you're right the husband thing will be a problem. There might be a way to address it, and I think that facing it in a primary would be a good thing. To me, it seems that he was one of those typical sho-string non-profit runners who couldn't manage money. She'll never get to national office, but I think she could make a case to Illinois voters and get into the senate. I don't know what her plan is. The funny thing is that the woman with the criminal husband seems to be the cleanest one around.
It seems the best other options haven't served in office yet. But I think there are people who could grow into the job.
Tammy Duckworth is fantastic, seems clean, and maybe that's why she didn't win Henry Hyde's seat. The RNC were over-the-top against her when she ran for congress, because how DARE a disabled veteran question the Iraq war. There were fake Duckworth midnight robo-calls they funded. She didn't have Democratic support then, but maybe now someone who isn't clean and isn't an heir will have a shot to move up. She hasn't even won a senate seat yet, though.
I really like Dan Seals. But he hasn't even won a political seat yet. He probably should have started with state office. He's clean, but as an innocent. He hasn't been tested.
Dare I ask - what is it about Tammy Duckworth that makes her so fantastic? She couldn't win a slam-dunk congressional race with the whole Democratic power structure and Rahm Emanuel backing her. I admire her courage, and I honor her sacrifice, but she seems the least qualified of all those who have been mentioned for Obama's seat.
I hope Jesse Jr runs and beats them both!
Jr probably isn't going to be the best candidate. When people here "jesse jackson", they automatically think of his father (and not a lot of people are big fans).
Jr's young, he can still make a name for himself, and I believe that he can.
You can forget Jesse in a primary. He doesn't poll well outside of Cook County and now that Burris is in place he will further dilute Jesse's support.
I also hope that Jesse Jackson Jr. run for Obama old Senate Seat
She has been a superb Rep. here in the 9th district and would make an equally excellent senator.
We keep reelecting her despite her husband, because we want the best expressing our interests in D.C.
The following is an excerpt from an article posted on Fox News in 2005, regarding Schkowsky's husband:
"CHICAGO — The husband of an Illinois congresswoman pleaded guilty Wednesday to tax violations and bank fraud for writing rubber checks and failing to collect withholding tax from an employee so he could use the money to pay a bill.
Robert Creamer (search), a political consultant married to four-term U.S. Rep. Jan Schakowsky (search), could face four years in prison on the two felony counts when he is sentenced Dec. 21.
"I still stand by him," Schakowsky, D-Ill., said after the hearing. "He's a wonderful man, and this doesn't define what he is."
So what?
She has never even been accused of wrongdoing.
(Other than by i'diots trying to ruin her political career.)
I live in Illinois and would never vote for her; she's got her own problems - namely: her husband! (Is he still in jail?!)
The following is an excerpt from an article dated 1/1/2009" Blagojevich Disregrads Obama's list of Preferred Candidates":
"After Jarrett bowed out of consideration, Obama’s transition team delivered the names of a half dozen, “highly qualified” candidates to Blagojevich’s office: Dan Hynes; Tammy Duckworth; Rep. Jan Schakowsky (D-Ill.); Rep. Jesse Jackson Jr. (D-Ill.); Lisa Madigan; and Cheryle Jackson."
Do you see any names you recognize?
Schakowsky was one of those behind the scenes deisiring the position from the beginning. Remember that Reid, Durbin, and Obama, through Emanuel, all attempted to influence the Governor's selection.
Only after the Governor appointed Burris was the political firestorm started to deny Burris the seat.
If the Governor had appointed Schakowsky as Obama wanted, would she have been "tainted"? Was
Schakowsky an opportunist for wanting the position? Is she an opportunist now?
The entire attempt to deny the Governor's legal appointment was a political "stunt". Too bad so many are totally void of understanding and so full of latent racism.
She would have accepted the position and because of her demographic profile, no one on this website would have said a thing. That is what would have happened.
OH please and then you woke up out of your dream
I wonder if Jan Schakowsky and her husband filed joint tax returns? If they did, then under the law, she's just as guilty of tax violations as he is. Unless she claims to be an "innocent spouse", totally unaware of her husband's financial shenanigans. The problem with that tack is that it would indicate that she is too dense to serve in the Senate.
Personally, I don't care for Schakowsky. She strikes me as being an opportunist, and she tends to talk down to the public, with a self-righteous, holier than thou, tone. We can do better. And it's not like there are NO women in the Senate - there aren't enough to match demographics, but there should be at least 14 black Senators, and right now there's only one.
Contrary to what has been posted here, Jesse Jackson Jr. has polled well statewide, and he was definitely a front runner to take over Obama's seat. It's almost as if the whole Blagojevich arrest and press conference were designed to make it impossible for him to accept the seat. Stranger things have happened in politics.
Jan Schakowsky has been an excellent representative here in the 9th Congressional District for quite a few years, and she was on the top of my wish list for selection by Blago.
Roland Burris is now, and always has been nothing more than a self-promoting milquetoast with an ego far larger than the list of his "qualifications".
We have rejected him 5 times so far. And in 2010, he'll be able to add a 6th defeat to his dismal resume'.
MEMO: STELL
What did he get a PhD in, this information can not be found on his own bio page; and as arrogant as this man is I seriously doubt that he would have left important information out.
And so let’s talk about his experience, ok he was elected as an accountant 3 times; and while as attorney general Roland Burris tried to send an innocent man to D I E because he didn't want to look weak even though all evidents pointed to the fact the man was innocent...
Now let’s look at his list of accomplishments:
He was rejected strongly by the people of Illinois
REJECTED--When he ran for Mayor
REJECTED--When he ran for Senator
REJECTED--When he ran for Governor (3times)
Roland Burris the Clown couldnt even make it out of the primaries because his own democratic people black and white etc. strongly. rejected him.
Your Candidate is nothing more than a SERIAL LOSER, whose was last elected into office was 1990.
Unless something else is missing from this resume that you care to provide otherwise stop trying to support a man who is too mediocre to defend.
He's Senator now, and there's nothing criminal in his conduct.
Plus, why pick on Burris? There are so many on the Hill who are a LOT worse......
Because when 98% of Democrats stood united he tried to divided us by using race and I that is unforgiveable; race is a serious factor and it has been used against many AA in the worst of ways and so to use it in such a miscellaneous way is reckless and d angerous.
I at first was opened minded until his press conferences and his spoke person Bobby Rush embarrassed the AA community by using this tactic trying Ig nite the f lames of
b igotry and that sealed it for him.
And once I read about him then you come to realize that the people of Illinois didn’t want this man either, not now and definitely not back then.
You can hit these tr0lls over the head with facts and they still can't comprehend the truth. They have nothing to contribute to helping build our country except false allegations and immature ignorant comments.
His PHD was Putting His Dependents in political jobs.
Uh ,,, you forgot to add that he was the first AA ever elected - statewide - in Illinois politics ...
and I'm going to go out on a limb here and guess that the notoriously poor job he did corresponds with the number of elections he's since lost.
Actually it was Harry Reid the upstanding Senator from Nevada who himself confirmed that Burris has two PhD's and two Master's degrees.
White liberals are having fun making fun of Burris and pretending it has nothing to do with his race.
Then they tell you to get off their back because they voted for O.bama.
The uproar over Burris's nomination has nothing to do with his race. The people of Illinois, most notably Chicago, which I am a resident, have voted against Burris in his last three attempts to get in office (Senator, Mayor and Governer) and did so because not of his race but because of better qualified choices. It was us same people who did vote for an afro-american which did have that senate seat before Burris was given it by Blago. How convenient for you to omit that fact.
These people know what you are saying is true -- they sit and think all day about what they could say to get a rise out of people!!! I think it's funny when republicans accuse us of being ra cists!!! It's called deflection!!
I am not a white liberal and feel he's too old to serve beyond these two years of term. Schakowski is good and yes I will support her. I've watched her work and respect her views on the citizens she represents.
Burris will be happy, he got to serve with Barack, he will go quietly, after all the dirt comes out.
Well........cronyism.
Let's see there are 22 Congresspersons serving right now. How about Feinstein, Reid, very soon Pelosi, Lautenberg, etc.? Are you sure it's that he's too old? Or that he's the wrong color?
Blago made Burris' race a major and cyncial factor in his appointment.
You want to talk about race? Go back and look at the crowds at the Republican National Convention and tell me which party is racist. You know nothing about Chicago/Illinois politics outside of what Mr. (Oh I can't serve in the military cause I got a pimple on my a&&) Limbaugh spews. Get lost tr0ll.
Anybody except a Blagojevich appointed senator.

You and me both. Watch if she does run and wins the 2010 election the Tr0lls will screan gender bias lol.
I think Jan can win against Burris. When the election comes around, everyone will want a clean slate from Blago's leadership which will mean Burris will lose in a primary election. He's just not going to be able to win.
