Inside Obama's Massive Inaugural Train

I Like ItI Don’t Like It

A lot of ink has been spilled comparing Barack Obama's inaugural Whistle Stop tour with the pre-presidential trip taken by Abraham Lincoln. Obama himself has cultivated the comparisons with his political idol.

But there are obvious differences as well. On his way to the White House, Lincoln traveled for nearly two weeks -- the latter part under threat of assassination -- making more than 100 speeches at various spots.

And he didn't have Obama's train.

The president-elect's staff sends over some background information on the mode of transportation being used for the roughly 150-mile trek from Philadelphia to D.C.

The train is ten cars long, encompassing the length of two-and-a-half football fields. The press is sitting in the front four cars while 16 specially-invited families (41 people total) are in a car of their own. No word where Obama is sitting or if he will walk through the aisles (aides and secret service members have been roaming). But the inaugural committee is saying there will be two "slow rolls" in which onlookers will get to wave at the train crawling by their windows.

Already, there are well-wishers lining up along the tracks, waving and snapping photos as the behemoth rolls by.

"Welcome aboard the 2009 inaugural train to Washington D.C.," said the conductor upon departing Philadelphia at 11:38. "On behalf of Amtrak I am pleased to welcome President-elect Obama and his special guests on this historical journey."

The Georgia 300 was built by Pullman Standard in 1939 as a 10-section lounge car for the Southern Railway. In 1949, Georgia Railroad purchased the car, after which it was rebuilt into the office configuration it has today. The Georgia 300 made regular trips to the Masters golf tournament and occasionally, the Kentucky Derby, hosting Georgia Governors and other dignitaries. It has also hosted George H. W. Bush and Bill Clinton. The train is now privately owned by the man who acquired it in 1985. It has a kitchen, two living room areas and a small bedroom.

This is all so contrived as I heard someone say this A.M. It is just a superficial distraction when we have so many real problems. I hope it is over soon and there is something more there than I've been seeing thus far.

What a stark compare and contrast the Obama and Bush inaugurations are!

The 2000 and 2004 inaugurations were dark with war, fear and laissez faire capitalistic promise for the wealthy..

This week, as Obama becomes our next president, the amosphere is filled with the light of hope, justice, peace and renewal for all Americans.

For the next few days, let us all smile and rejoice. Then let us all join together to make the promises of these joyful days a reality.

It is wonderful - the feeling that you don't have to wake up every morning wondering what ELSE Bush/Cheney have done to us.

Those belittling Obama need to remember - its government of the people, by the people, for the people....

We is it.

Can you just imagine the American people tolerating ANYONE outing a CIA agent in the middle of WWII?

They would have been ripped to shreds by angry mobs at worst, tried and convicted in a matter of weeks at best.

We dropped the ball. And we need to take our country back.

Obama is just the point man... we will have the government we want or we won't deserve it.

Perfectly put Dutchess2! We dropped the ball. We can't look to someone else to fix it. I hope we Americans are as good as our press.

What is it with dems and theatrics...they love theatre don't they...however, running this country is not a movie and just because someone acts bigger than life doesn't mean they are fact.....

Theatrics? What do you call dressing up like Tom Cruise in "Top Gun" and landing on an aircraft carrier in front of a banner that says "Mission Accomplished"?

Don't forget those backdrops in New Orleans. “There is no way to imagine America without New Orleans, and this great city will rise again,” the president said.

Whazzat??

After 8 years of using military service members as props for photo-ops at every opportunity???

Come on, be serious.

Sorry, it is theater. Its a continuous campaign for your special interest groups that elected you.
It is a lot of smoke and mirrors and imagery. The power of the presidency has to be created. Its not a given that he can do anything he wants.

I think they all thought they were in West Wing in the beginning. Now it has turned into a movie. It's scary, that's for sure. We need real solutions now not all of this Hollywood glitz and idol adulation. I always expect a certain amount of it when the candidate is younger than usual. What bothers me is the lengths Obama goes to to promote it. This is all about him not this country.

Back in the 30's, traveling by train meant traveling in style!

It would be great if it could be that way again!!

Information about the Private Railway car Georgia 300 used on the train can be found at http://cruiselinehistory.com/.

It was not built in 1939 but 1930. Check the facts...

We need infra-structure investment in light rail and mass transit projects. I hope Obama's trip on the train will be a way to highlight the needs of our nation at this time in our history!

The information about the private car GEORGIA 300 is totally wrong. It was not built in 1939 but 1930. Suggest you look at: www.cruisingthepast.com for information. The car has an observation platform, lounge, more than one bedroom, dining room, galley and crew quarters. When will American journalist research something. Watching this on TV I have never seen so much misinformation.

Here the facts about the Georgia 300:

Built by Pullman Standard in 1930, as a 10-section lounge car for the Southern Railway and named General Polk. The car operated on the Crescent between New and New Orleans.

Purchased by the Georgia Railroad in 1949, the car was rebuilt to the office car configuration it has today and given the number 300. The Georgia 300 made regular trips to the Masters golf tournament and, occasionally, the Kentucky Derby, hosting Georgia governors and other dignitaries.

Declared surplus with the merger of the Georgia Railroad and the Family Lines, the car was acquired by the current owner in 1985. It has been rebuilt and has hosted Presidents Carter, George H.W. Bush, and Clinton. The car is based in Orange Park, Florida, and is owned by Jack Heard.

A valid point: MSM verges on the illiterate, especially TV, especially Fox. Misinformation seems to be their goal. Sloppy syntax and grammar, adolescent research and fact-finding, and that covers the good view!

"Longer than two football fields!"

Uh, hate to break it to you but most trains are. Even Amtrak commuter lines...

Somewhat new to trains are you?
Perhaps a trip to Europe where the trains are a real part of people's life would be a nice intro for you.

Just sayin'.

why do people underestimate the work of the secret service?! They're in the business of protection presidents, i'd say they know what they're doing .. just relax and enjoy history..nothing bad is going to happen ... as if there's something you can do about it.

They've got it!

It is exciting. I am very hopeful. It is wonderful to know that we will have a president who is smart, aware, cares and will work hard for us. I'm ready to roll up my sleeves, too.

coco .. I hear you !! When I was much younger I had the opportunity to watch the Eisenhower Funeral Train as it passed through my hometown in Missouri. I was fortunate to have parents who felt that this was possibly the only time this would occur in our lifetime and they wanted us to have the sense of history that accompanies such events. Granted .. it was not a joyous occassion .. but I have never forgotten the emotions that swirled around that small train station that night . I am also very happy to have the opportunity to participate in the *changing of direction* inspired by PE Obama .. I find myself smiling at the strangest times .. instead of *floating anxiety* I seem to have reached *floating pride/joy/enthusiasm* .. and I love it !!!! Go Obama !!!!
