I Like ItI Don’t Like It

There's been constant speculation since November 4th about what would happen to President-elect Barack Obama's giant grassroots campaign network. Now Obama has an answer: a new group called Organizing for America that will redirect campaign volunteers to push for legislation. Watch:

The full press release:

In a video announcement sent to supporters today, President-elect Obama announced the formation of Organizing for America. This is the next phase for the organization that was built during the campaign, offering volunteers the continued opportunity to work for change in their communities by organizing in support of reform in Washington.

"As President, I will need the help of all Americans to meet the challenges that lie ahead. That's why I'm asking people like you who fought for change during the campaign to continue fighting for change in your communities. Since the election hundreds of thousands of you have shared your ideas about how this movement should move forward, and we've listened carefully," said President-elect Obama in the video announcement.

He continued: "Volunteers, grass roots leaders and ordinary citizens will continue to drive our organization, helping us bring about the changes we proposed during the campaign: a solution to our economic crisis, an end to the war in Iraq, affordable healthcare for all and new sources of energy to power our economy and protect our environment."

This announcement follows a dialogue with Obama for America supporters across the country. More than 500,000 completed surveys following the election making clear their vision for the organization, and more than 4,200 hosted house parties in their communities. A clear majority believe that organizing in support of President-elect Obama's agenda should be the most important goal for the organization.

Organizing for America will partner with Governor Kaine and the DNC.

"Change doesn't come easy -- our work has just begun," said Governor Kaine. "President-elect Obama has laid the foundation to meet the great challenges facing our nation, but we can succeed only if we build grassroots support for the administration's agenda. As the DNC works to elect candidates who will support the change agenda, we will also invest in bottom-up efforts that ensure that the priorities of everyday Americans are heard in Washington."

Further details about Organizing for America will be announced in the coming days. A link to the President-elect's announcement, and a transcript, are below.

When I'm sworn in as the President of the United States, it will be because of you. You've built the largest grass roots movement in history, and shaped the future of this country. And the movement you've built is too important to stop growing now. Today I'm pleased to announce the creation of Organizing for America--the organization that will build on the movement you started during the campaign.

As President, I will need the help of all Americans to meet the challenges that lie ahead. That's why I'm asking people like you who fought for change during the campaign to continue fighting for change in your communities. Since the election hundreds of thousands of you have shared your ideas about how this movement should move forward, and we've listened carefully.

Volunteers, grass roots leaders and ordinary citizens will continue to drive our organization, helping us bring about the changes we proposed during the campaign: a solution to our economic crisis, an end to the war in Iraq, affordable healthcare for all and new sources of energy to power our economy and protect our environment.

Joe Biden and I will be working with Congress to bring about change in Washington. But we cannot do this without you. The change we've worked so hard for will not happen unless ordinary Americans get involved, and supporters like you must lead the way.

You'll be receiving more information in the next few days about this organization and how you can continue to play a crucial role in our journey to change America. I look forward to continuing that journey with you, and I thank you for everything you've done for this movement and for our country.

Organizing for America must provide ideas and support for laying the groundwork for providing jobs and a new contract between the government and the governed. The President must provide the vision from the many ideas of the people. His selfless cabinet members and military leaders must provide the action that turns legislative policy and procedure into action. And selfless citizens must sacrifice for the common good.

Great idea, President Obama! Someone laughed at the community organizer, now he is the President and his hard work still goes on for the PEOPLE's BENEFITS. What a real change!

I'd love to see this network and the 13 million people on Obama's list launch a boycott of companies like WalMart and Home Depot that not only have been huge backers of Republican candidates, but are campaigning furiously against the Employee Free Choice Act--a bill that would once again give workers the chance to organize unions without having to navigate an endless gauntlet of intimidation, harassment, and delays that can stretch on for years.

There's a great article on it in the current Nation

Great. Now imagine a charismatic REPUBLICAN president at the head of a 13 million strong political organization with a $75 million dollar annual budget, ready and willing to agitate on behalf of conservative issues whenever commanded to do so by the president. Sounds a little sinister, doesn't it? Well, this is the new politcal world that Barack Obama is ushering in.

I'm all for that. As Dr. King said,

"Organize, baby, organize."

It's the only way workers will be able to break the hold the big corporations have on the common people. Encourage people to boycott anti-union companies and join unions or get involved in their unions to make this a better country for all, not just the rich.

It would be nice if those on huffingtonpost could go on the change. gov website and vote on issues in the Citizens Briefing Book. I had put out the submission "Reform the Federal Income Tax Process and Marginal Tax Rate Now !!" but people so far (based on the votes) seem more interested in legalizing Ma ri juana. I'm all for ending the so-called "War on Drugs" -- but I think there are more pressing issues such as the economy.

LA Times has a source in the Obama camp saying an annual budget of $75 million is being discussed. This is basically a sitting president maintaining a standing political army to conduct perpetual political campaigning and fundraising, and you know those annoying Obama emails will keep landing in your inbox, asking for more and more money. This is not healthy for democracy. It's an incumbent president using his unique position to build an unassailable advantage over any potential challengers. You can forget about Kucinich or Dean in 2012. They won't be able to compete.

This is Obama's brave new world. Campaigning and fundraising without end. Campaigning and fundraising machinery that never rests, and continually seeks to expand its already imposing size and power, with the backing of a sitting president. There's no way another Democrat will be able to mount a challenge in 2012.

There are about 20 Republican Senate seats that need to be corrected in 2010. The movement is necessary. No time to sleep.

Plus there is a nationwide need to keep Congress focused on the will of the people. A directed rabble is the best way to do it. Public education on the issues has to come from the grass roots. National Healthcare will not happen (as an example) if we allow discussion to be shut off with pronouncements from the right like "We wouldn't want to be like the French" or "That's Socialistic"

This very same movement will also be vigilant watching the new President, making sure his ideas for change reflect the will of the people. They--we--will not do anything that we think isn't helpful. We will have input, and we will tweak policy if necessary.

this is a wonderful idea. Unless the people get behind him and push, he does not have a chance against the greed class in this society. Think about Bill Clinton and what happened to him.

That would be good. Every worker organized into a union of workers with similar skills. Doctors Union, Power Engineers Union, Baristas Union, Farmers Union, Dairymens Union Students Union. Then national issues could be discussed with the citizens too, rather than just the corporations. Good idea.

Believe this, if it weren't for Unions there would be no child labor laws, and by the way we would all still be working for 10 cents an hour, now that's the republican way.

And the final nail in the coffin of regressive, reactionary and repressive forces such as the Republican Party will be higher education. So ramp up the higher education opportunities. People shouldn't have to reside in the Trailer Parks of the Mind.

If properly put into practice, this is a brilliant notion.

Citizens, acting collectively and responsibly, can be a force that simply sweeps aside the slimy snares of corporate terrorists and their political wing, the Republican Party.

And now, in the 21st Century, effectively and properly relegating right wing fascism to its rightful place... into a sewer of history.

Doesn't it need to start with the "Cleaning Up of America" by prosecuting Bush Administrations officials that have approved of illegal tactics like torture, revealing names of US covert spies, and lying to get us in war. If everyone must follow the law AND everyone is accountable, a lot of Bush people need to be prosecuted and serve time. If anything, prosecution will help serve as a deterrent for future Presidents who might think of doing the same.

A pity, because the last two didn't mention donating a dime.

Unlike you, I haven't lost hope yet simply because Obama isn't in office yet. As a liberal, I'll withhold judgment on him and support him until he s c r e w s u p. As a progressive I want him to succeed because if he fails, we go down with the ship.

This is one of the best political moves ever.

1 ) It sounds great.
2 ) It motivates more people to get involved in a positive way.
3 ) It helps him get needed legislation passed.

and most important ... It keeps his political re-election team all together and organized until the next election.

The "community organizer" has organized his community.
