I Like ItI Don’t Like It

"Saturday Night Live" opened with Diane Sawyer interviewing outgoing VP Dicky Cheney. No matter what he's asked, Cheney regrets nothing.

Starting with topics like Iraq, Sawyer (Kristen Wiig) asks Cheney (Darrell Hammond) increasingly irrelevant, sympathetic questions. Cheney answers every question with a negative.

Sawyer: "We recently learned that my assistant has separated from her husband. Isn't that regrettable?

Cheney: "In my opinion, no."

This was the weakest opening ever on SNL. Yes it got old very fast. The Gitmo Clearance Ad is a lot funnier.

I am sure he is laughing all the way to the Bank ! mr horseface himself ... guess he received more $$ under the table from Haliburton and those Sheiks, along with tax payers money that should have gone to banks but I am sure he and Bush received bits of it.

gawd, that was painfully unfunny. i couldn't get through the whole sketch. yuck. snl needs to be retired. just trot it out once every four years for tina fey and darrell hammond to do their politician impersonations but that's about it. rest of the show can shove off. i wonder who lorne michaels is blackmailing at nbc to keep this drivel on the air?

SNL is riding, (as it always has) the periphery of comedy. I agree with many others, this sketch didn't work, at all. Neither imitation was even close to Sarah Palin funny, but that's the risk of comedy, sometimes people do not laugh or relate to the humor, when everyone in rehearsal did.
In SNL's defense, there were a few other skits that did work that night, but not all. The "Gilley School Girl" skit "BLEW!" They brought us memorable satire with Bush and Sarah Plain, McCain as well.
There is a downdraft right now since Tina and Amy aren't with anymore. They will work it out and I will check them out again next weekend, waiting for the next new writer and actor who find our funny bones (I am not an 83 Y.O. woman).
I get good giggle out of MAD-TV.

It was funny at the start but it would have been funnier if he said no in different ways. The joke got old fast.

Yes, I agree. A few more lines of increasingly bizarre reasoning behind his persistent answers of no. Such as, with the turtles: This is the nature of the brutal natural world. It's eat or be eaten, Diane. And based on the intelligence we had at the time, we acted properly. So, no, I don't have any regrets that only half make it to the safety of the sea.

Hammond's impersonation of Dick could be a lot more involved and thought out. I thought Wiig was boring as Sawyer. Then again, Sawyer is deadly boring. Overall the skit kinda sucked.

SNL jumped the shark a LOOOONG time ago. MadTV is currently the far superior Saturday Night comedy show. Why doesn't huff get some clips from there?

HEAR, HEAR!!! I agree 100% with you. MadTV is FAR superior to SNL. The only time I have laughed out loud at SNL in the last 30 years was the recent episode with the impersonation of Gov. Paterson (sorry, I have a very black, no pun intended, sense of humor).

MADTV has always seemed, to me anyway, to be a generic low-budget spinoff of SNL. They do have some funny skits, characters and guest appearances. However, they'll always seem like a cheap spin-off and that type of thing always detracts from the comedy. Really, the only sketch comedy series to rival SNL was "In Living Color". For obvious reasons (read: Jim Carrey, Keenan & Daman Wayans and the others). MADTV has just as much painfully unfunny skits as SNL if not more.

Sorry to be the bearer of bad tidings, but MadTV has been canceled by Fox. The producers are shopping it to cable networks.

SNL has deteriorated past the point where it is merely a stupid show.

It's time for Lorne Michaels and Co. to be give the hook.

Please add my voice to the chorus who thought the Cheney interview bit went on far too long with the same joke. Why didn't the questions get more outrageous:

SAWYER: Do you regret causing Hurricane Katrina?

CHENEY: Not at all.

SAWYER: Do you regret stealing alien cadavers from Area 51 and serving them at State dinners?

CHENEY: Nope (chuckles)

I guess Bush's farewell address put the writers to sleep as well as Cheney. THANK YOU! I'm hwere till Thursday!

The only bad thing I can think to say about President Obama is that he will be the death of comedy in the U.S.

This outgoing White House has done for comedy what Nixon did in the 1970s. They are the gift that keeps on giving, if one is in the entertainment industry.

I just realised, that today the entertainment industry includes the MSM. So, in a way, Bush has made possible a whole new segment of entertainment - "news" according to the pundits. I, and most of America, happen to believe that the comedians are usually more truthful, and entertaining, than the pundits. How strange is that?

Not strange at all. Comedians are not restrained by the same ties that bind news anchors or pundits; the corporation. TBH, comedians are, by nature, unafraid of much. Just to get on stage and do a stand-up bit, fail or not, takes some intestinal fortitude. MSM anchors and pundits, OTOH, are usually so afraid to stray from their scripted, safe BS for fear of losing their jobs or being deemed irrelavent. George Carlin was a perfect example of how a comedian can also be a very insightful social commentator. I'm sure George opened a lot of peoples eyes on religion, government and other serious topics by lampooning the he.ll out of them.
