Bill Ayers Refused Entry To Canada

An American education professor, one of the founders of a radical 1960s group known as the Weather Underground, which was responsible for a number of bombings in the United States in the early 1970s, was turned back at the Canadian border last night.

Dr. William Ayers, a professor of education at the University of Illinois-Chicago and a leader in educational reform, was scheduled to speak at the Centre for Urban Schooling at University of Toronto's Ontario Institute for Studies in Education. But that appearance has now been temporarily cancelled.

"I don't know why I was turned back," Ayers said in an interview this morning from Chicago.

Perhaps a little pushback for Homeland Security, or even worse, Canada adopting a more "American" style border policy. Either way, it's lousy.

We had a Catholic priest friend held for hours at Canadian customs, first denied entry to perform a wedding (no pay involved), then allowed in for 12 hours and charged $400 for the privilege. He also had to pay quite a lot to get out of Vancouver on such short notice. These incidents happen-- they are arbitrary and benefit no one.
Bill Ayers is no more a threat to Canadians than a Catholic priest.
Let's hope the new US administration is different and that the Canadian government sets aside its present conservative attitudes.

Canada has one of the most restrictive entry policies in the world (2nd only to Australia).

You can't even get in that country if you had a DWI 30 years ago unless you file a special petition requesting entry.

Why? They don't want the Mexicans flooding the country, and they don't want American mentality seeping into their culture.

I have a friend who took a ferry into Canada to go meet some girl he met online, and he got turned back at the ferry terminal because he had a DUI from like 8 years back. And it wasn' that long ago.

Bill Ayers does not hate the USA. He hated the Vietnam war and he protested it like millions of people did. He has said often that he regrets the way he went about it and that he should not have resorted to violence in order to make his point but he does not regret protesting the war.

For years Americans have been paying more in retail store because of products stolen. It is clear they had a mind set to watch every step black people made while in their stores. Canada has a Truth and Reconciliation Commission that is dealing with past wrongs and claims. An official apology has been made to the first peoples, as they are called in Canada. Some bands never did sign treaties. Claims are being settled, often with local bands receiving lands in urban (and prosperous) areas.

If you ever failed to appear over a speeding ticket, you're refused entrance
If you've got a mis.demeanor, you're refused entrance.

If you have *anything* on your record, even stealing a candy bar when you were 18, you are refused entrance at the border. You have to file a special request with the government for an exemption to get in. Most people aren't aware of how restrictive Canada is with entry requirements. They think it's just an open border 51st state or something.
