More than two-thirds of African-Americans believe Martin Luther King Jr.'s vision for race relations has been fulfilled, a CNN poll found -- a figure up sharply from a survey in early 2008.
Martin Luther King Jr. waves to supporters from the steps of the Lincoln Memorial on August 28, 1963.

The CNN-Opinion Research Corp. survey was released Monday, a federal holiday honoring the slain civil rights leader and a day before Barack Obama is to be sworn in as the first black U.S. president.

FZle. "We do not inherit shame from our ancestors. That is the business of the Lord.
We all have histories clouded with injustice and abuse. That is not a persistent trauma.
Reparations are for those who have suffered and it has been well documented that
most of the slaves ended up being far better off than if they had stayed in their native countries.
Today's deeds and those we have committed are what we need to be held accountable for.

Oh brother, obviously you missed the lessons on African history...ooops they're elective and you opted for cooking class. Do you know how many slaves Just turned in their graves by your comment? They were better off, come off it! If only you could have spend an hour on their shoes...ooops they had no shoes, an hour in their skin you would not say such non sense.

Those most of those two thirds of AA will be changing their mind once they realize that Obama isn't going to send out checks in the mail to them.

Racial slurs and the kind of ignorance you display with your comment is very revealing. You are the kind of person that just doesn't get it because you don't want to get it. Get it?

CNN has been pushing this propaganda all weekend. This is foolish. King's dream was equality. Electing a black man as president does not gurantee equality. Just ask South Africa.

Meant to say: "Putting a person in the White House....." in my previous post. Sorry for the lack of clarity and

The dream isn't completely fulfilled just yet, I'm not going that far. I'll acknowledge that it has come a LONG way, but racism and discrimination hasn't been totally erased with us electing a black president.

This "War Baby" is white.
Been through a lot.....lots more to come.
Marched for peace in the '60's and saw the strife.
As far as I am concerned, Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.'s dream
will not be realized until there is seldom mention of a person's
race, color, creed, ethnicity, sexual preference or any of those
handy labels "we" use to differentiate ourselves from being one
body of humanity.
King's dream will be fulfilled when rap music is transformed into
positive inspiration. King's dream will be fulfilled when people listen
more to Bill Cosby than people who talk hate.
Putting a person who happens to have more pigmentation in his skin than
I have is not the fulmination of King's dream. It is a big step forward and
history is being made, but Obama is merely a man with dark skin.
King would be celbrating today, for sure, but he would not retire to the
golf courses with Tiger Woods and Arnold Palmer if he were still living.
It is a great step forward, but all people who love humanity know that
King was not just speaking about African Americans in his speech.
He was speaking about us all....each and every one of us.
May he rest in peace and may Obama live long and well to create
a legacy our great great grandchildren will be proud to honor.

the dream has not be realized! This is a step in the right direction.....Minorities are not judge by the content of our character......but by the color of our skin. There is still work to be done......When we get to a place we can stop saying it is the first one........then maybe we would be at the front door of the dream for every minority.

Repairations are still in order. Until the United States doesn't apologize financially for slavery (like they did with Japanese interment camp survivors) blacks in this country will not be able to heal and let go of the pain and mental anguish that keeps them traumatized. You want to help them be healthy, then apologize for having the privilege of benefitting for being caucasian in America. Slaves even built the WH, shame shame shame.

I am very proud and joyful to see the first African American President in . But MLK dream wasn't about seeing one black man progress to the highest office in the land. MLK dream was to see fairness and eqaulity of life for all those who have been oppress over the years .Although we have made good progress , this country still have a long way to go as far race relations and the two tier justice system in this country .

Now, I say to you today my friends, even though we face the difficulties of today and tomorrow, I still have a dream. It is a dream deeply rooted in the American dream. I have a dream that one day this nation will rise up and live out the true meaning of its creed: - 'We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal.'

I'm a 41 year old white guy and I don't think Dr. MLK Jr's dream has been fulfilled.

Progress, yes. Fulfilled? No.

Not until ALL Americans share in economic equality will the Dream be fulfilled.

Racial Equality was only one part of the Dream.

Durango.... I really do not think M.L.K. Jr. was a marxist or a socialist.
I believe he wanted everyone to have the "same" opportunities but not
the same money. Besides....WTF is "economic equality" anyway?
Are you saying the government ought to divide up all the "goodies"
equally per capita? Then does the government do the same again
every 10 years after the "Census/Inventory" is done?
Exactly what are you talking about?

Martymar74: You are absolutely right. A N D to a certain extent it is a time to
be joyfully focused on today's accomplishments. The inability to enjoy one's self is the
cause of many career grumblers and malcontents. Let's celebrate the hell out of
Obama's success and that of the people of color. We can dig in after the well-
deserved celebration is over....say Monday, next week.

The state of Black America is more grim than it's has been in years. The dropout rates, crime rates, HIV rates, disintegration of the family structure and prison rates are an embarassment and Dr. King would certainly not feel like this the kind of progress that he was seeking. Nice try corporate media, but if this is an attempt to pacify the masses, then I will marching harder and louder than I ever have before.

One man, Obama, who won't even take a position on black issues will definitely not save the race.

Forget saving "the race." We all have to work on saving the SPECIES!
We have screwed so much up in the world, race is only a component of
what we have to deal with.

And who is at fault for the dropout rates, crime rates, HIV rates, and the illegitimacy rates?

Did the white man make black children not value education?

Did the white man make black men rob corner stores or sell drugs?

Did the white man make black men have sex with multiple partners without a condom?

Did the white man make black men impregnate multiple women and not man up and be a father?

Take some responsibility.

Morbie5: If you care about people and are frustrated that you cannot be of assistance,
try going out and actually making a difference in a person or two's lives. That will elevate
your spirits to where you will love being of service.

If you are here to throw rocks at people...enjoy it, but the censors may not like it and
you will, in the end, be a cold, disrespected person who constantly uses anger and
otherization to try to feel better about yourself.

Take the top route and soar!

Well, equal in opportunity would be the best that could be achieved, for doggone it, everybody is NOT equal in intelligence, in ambition, etc.

I do note a severe dearth of Asians in the National Basketball Association. Should we have a quota?
