From AP:

First lady Michelle Obama wore a sparkling yellow-gold sheath dress with matching coat by Cuban-born American designer Isabel Toledo for the inauguration of her husband, a choice many applauded as a cheerful message of hope and a vote for the American fashion industry.

She paired the embellished ensemble with green gloves from J. Crew and green shoes.

President Barack Obama wore a red tie and white shirt with his suit, topped with an overcoat adorned with an American flag pin.

Their daughters were style icons in their own right, with 10-year-old Malia in a double-breasted periwinkle-blue coat with a blue-ribbon bow at the waist, and Sasha, 7, in a pink coat with orange scarf and satin belt, a coral-colored dress peeking out at the hem. Their coats were from Crewcuts by J. Crew.

The fashion industry has anxiously looked to the election of Obama for months, embracing his wife as an emblem and ambassador of modern American style. She has won praise for her penchant for lesser-known designers and bold fashion choices, mixed with her unabashed love for mass fashion from mainstream American retailers.

"She is single-handedly breathing new life into designers like Narciso Rodriguez and Isabel Toledo, who have had a rocky past," said red-carpet and editorial stylist Mary Alice Stephenson.

"What's so powerful about Michelle Obama is we all see ourselves in her. She's a modern woman who is fashionable and even flamboyant in her style and she is still taken seriously," she said. "She's wearing that dress today for all of us. We're all wearing that dress with her. The dress is elegant, appropriate and has the individual style stamp of Michelle Obama and is timely for a woman in her 40s and she wears embellishment during the day. Hallelujah!"

Nicole Phelps, executive editor of Style.com, notes that Michelle Obama has found an elegant silhouette that works for her: the narrow sheath dress and complementary coat.

The inaugural outfit is a "classic choice rather conservative compared to some of the things she's worn so far," Phelps said, but she still gives her fashion wink with her gloves and colored pumps. The gold, she adds, captures the glistening sun.

"This choice sends a great message to the fashion community. She could have gone with someone more obvious, like Ralph Lauren, but this sends a message to the American designers who are struggling. ... It also says that just because she's in the White House, she'll support the under-the-radar designers she wore on the way to the White House," Phelps said.

Designer Toledo, who just a few years ago unsuccessfully tried to infuse more modern style into the venerable Anne Klein label, is considered among the more avant garde U.S. designers.

Michelle Obama has been noted for choosing unexpected fashion designers, including Narciso Rodriguez, Zero Maria Cornejo and Chicago designer Maria Pinto. For the "Kids Inaugural" concert on Monday, Michelle Obama wore a J.Crew ensemble, including a metallic lace top, aqua-colored pencil skirt and cardigan.

The Obama' look Tuesday contrasted with that of the outgoing Bushes, with Laura Bush in a dove-gray skirt suit and matching coat.

On the podium with the Obamas, Vice President Joe Biden wore a bright blue tie, while his wife, Jill Biden, had on a bright red coat and high black leather boots.

Also catching style-watchers' eyes: Aretha Franklin singing to the immense crowd gathered at the Capitol in an over-the-top hat with an oversized bow and beading.

This outfit made her look ten years older and as if she were on her way to a 5:00 pm suburban country club. Nix on this one. Her train outfit and the one she wore to the Lincoln Memorial concert were true winners.

She wore them, they edit not wear her.

As a conservative who thought laura bush was always attempting to look like barbara bush light....I have to say, I loved her outfit. Of course, I am a conservative and so as such, appreciated seeing a woman cover up her bits and pieces, look classy, have a unique style, not dress in beige or black, and stick to what she likes instead of what people would try to dictate that she like. She didn't look like an uptight feminist garbed in hemp and birkenstocks. She had a bit of bling around the neck that might be construed as inappropriate, but I have never heard anyone say lace was only for nighttime. We don't just wear it on lingerie folks. At least, conservative women don't. We find it pretty and feminine. That's how she looked, like a flower. I hope that makes all the feminists throw up a little. lol

Was that supposed to be gown or window treatments that she was wearing?

What really sparkles about Michelle Obama is her intelligence, her commitment to motherhood and childrearing, and her sense of duty in community service -- what she wears be damned.

Classy, great. Just great.

I'm a big Michelle fan, but her dress was inappropriate. Wearing sparkly yellow brocade in the morning is tacky. As much as as is curdles me to say so, Laura looked perfect. A lovely tailored suit, and her hair looked great. If only George would spend some of his money on a big diamond pin for his pretty wife. You can carry conservative a little too far, and Laura needed some bling on that suit. Joansie

The colors of Michelle's outfit and accessories, yellow and green, are next to each other on the color spectrum, as are the colors of the girls' outfits. Remember ROY G BIV? If you add the colors of Malia's and Sasha's outfits to Michelle's, you have virtually the entire color spectrum: Sasha (RO) + Michelle (Y G) + Malia (BIV) = a rainbow. What an apt statement and metaphor for what lies ahead.

I must say, I think the dress didn't look good on television or in direct sunlight, but I think the photos where she's out of the sun it looks great. It was something about the color and the busyness of the fabric that didn't translate well.

Is it part of my future that I will run across commentary on the clothing Michelle Obama will wear? Is there some way these articles could be labeled so I can scroll past? A hundred years from now, will well educated reporters be chasing down clothing stories? Maybe these stories might be confined to fashion blogs so that those whose opinion about celebrities' garments can get the attention it deserves.

Oh well, we all can't be fashionistas now can we?!

The dresses were G-d awful but who bloody cares, REALLY?!
I didn't have to wear it and neither did any of you hissing cockroaches!

I'll bet an entire nickel that President Obama loved those dresses.
Mrs. Michelle Obama seems to be more into her family than anything else. She obviously doesn't care anything about appeasing the likes of you fashion conscience *fill in the blank*

I don't think the dress was appropriate for a daytime engagement. And the white dress had way too much material. On the up side, she has more style than Condoleeza Rice.
12:16 AM on 01/23/2009
I fully agree that the outfit was inappropriate for daytime wear. Sure, it seems that the First Lady wants to make some kind of "statement" that she is just like ordinary folk, but I certainly hope (as someone who is involved with the very special image of power women in DC)--I hope that she gets appropriate guidance and advice before she has to represent us before another chief of state or at a state dinner or at a diplomatic reception or at any of the rather formal exercises that we have to deal with here--constantly. Uniqueness now and then = great and creative. Appropriateness for the occasion = absolutely necessary.

I love J. Crew for moderately-priced cashmere sweaters. I recommend clients who are just starting their careers and are on a budget to get a J. Crew suit for those important meetings. I do not want the First Lady of the United Sates to admit that she's wearing J.Crew. What's the point?

And before some idiot accuses me of racism, I assure you, I am blacker than the ace of spades--and proud of it.

Great remarks, Miss Ace of Spades. Good advice for Michelle. Our first lady shouldn't wear these form-fitting dresses. I heard someone say that the "first butt" is too wide for them. Not respectful, maybe, but on target. Boxy jackets at hip length might be more becoming. But wow, the kids looked fantastic!

Michelle is a beautiful woman and has a distinctive way of dressing. This chartreuse outfit was an improvement over the horrible red/black outfit for election night, but hardly great. The color was reminiscent of bile, and the skirt fit badly. Lace and satin are not cold winter outside wear except as a lining. Michelle, I love you but seasonality is the key to being well dressed.

The guipure (embroidered lace) was interesting, but applied over satin its the wrong material for winter outdoors. It shimmered than is appropriate for day wear except at a wedding. The fit was inexcusible - the skirt cut across the lap because it was too tight. It left visible creases. The weskit's puce color was a darker contrast and provided an intriguing textural counterpoint. But it was not substantial enough to be warm and it broke up the long line of the coat. I would have preferred a beautifully cut wool sheath dress in orange, tan or purple (these colors look great on Michelle) with a fine long fur coat lined with exquisite contrasting silk fabric, and a matching fur hat. She has the statuesque beauty and the social position to carry it off.

Forget the politically correct thing. Fur is the only thing to wear if you have earned it (and Michelle certainly has) and its 15 degrees wind chill. With fur, you won't shiver and you don't get sick.

Thanks for the heads up on the name of that fabric I had never heard of wool "guipure" lace.

I'm very glad howerer that our first lady was smart enough- or maybe I should say sensitive enough not to wear animal fur in spite of her statuesque beauty and social position.

Well if Michelle ever reads all of these comments ( which is doubtful) maybe she will see the light and get some help with what she wears. The prayer dress was the worst yet.
02:16 PM on 01/22/2009
Agree with you, someone needs to advise her, maybe everyone is telling her what she wants to hear that she looks good. They need to be honest.
