Former French president Jacques Chirac was rushed to hospital after being mauled by his own 'clinically depressed' pet dog.

The 76-year-old statesman was savaged by his white Maltese dog - which suffers from frenzied fits and is being treated with anti-depressants.

Abs.urd overstatement like that is a comedic convention, but it is true that another person's misfortune can be hilarious, especially when that misfortune is accompanied by an embarrassingly abs.urd situation. A lot of comedy stems from pain; laughter is often just a release of tension. We feel that embarrassment and are glad it wasn't us.
