Was it a "French Poodle?"
If he had a Lab or an Australian Shepherd (originally from the Basque region near Spain)
he would never ever ever have been mauled.
Maybe the "Maltese" should have been called a "Maul-Tease"

French Poodles were hunting dogs. They brought back game which had fallen into the water or the bush. A passive animal does not do well at bring back game to hunters. One might say that Poodles may be aggressive at times. It may be part of their DNA which can't be bred out. The keepers of Poodles must constantly strive to control the instincts of the Poodle, a hunting dog. It takes more than the services of a groomer to make a Poodle into a house or lap dog. A Poodle can be a dangerous dog. A Poodle is a poor choice for a harried or easily distracted human. Poodles require the firm, loving, constant attention of a clever person. An unloved, unattended Poodle can be dangerous. Little Fru, Fru constantly remembers that he or she is a wild beast who has to fight to survive. That may be called an instinct. Fru-Fru can bite off your nose & lips as you kiss him/her.

Most people have never seen a real Poodle. We went twice in France with ours and the sentence we heard the most was "Oh! un caniche ! c'est la première fois que j'en vois un! -- Oh a poodle! That's the first time I see one!" He is 75 pounds and could be really dangerous. He needs constant attention, as you wrote. My wife cannot take him to the dogs' parks anymore. He would eat any dog around her and never surrender, whatever Americans think of anything that is "French". In France, the faces of hostels attendents were really priceless. Often, we were given larger rooms because of the dog. Chirac's dog is one of those little yappy untrained thing that one can see all around Paris. They lack the most elementary training. In restaurents, most customers never aware of the presence of our big dog, Standard Poodle are a lovely breed; I would not say the same of the toys size. Il ever you want to read something funny abour France Presidents' dogs, try to find something about Mitterand's dog and the police officers who truly hated him. L'Elysee is located in the middle of Paris in a parK, a door is always opened and Mitterand forbade the use of leaches for his dog .. Let's figure the job of the police how had to retrive him daily!

Vive les caniches!
