I Like ItI Don’t Like It

With one swift stroke--just 18 minutes of words, delivered with a stern tone and a steel gaze--Barack Hussein Obama sliced through the usual clutter and ambiguities of American politics and revealed what it looks like when history turns on a pivot.

The Bush years are over. Obama's inaugural address could not have made the ending more stark, with repeated lines signaling a new direction and offering veiled but unmistakable indictments of what the 44th president called a "failure to make hard choices and prepare the nation for a new age."

It would appear we are less hostile here than Great Britain:

"It is frightening to think there is a real possibility that the entire world economy could go into complete meltdown and famine kill millions. Yet Western - and British - commentators are cocooned in a warm comfort zone of infatuation with America's answer to Neil Kinnock. We should be long past applauding politicians of any hue: they got us into this mess. The best deserve a probationary opportunity to prove themselves, the worst should be in jail.

It is questionable whether the present political system can survive the coming crisis. Whatever the solution, teenage swooning sentimentality over a celebrity cult has no part in it. The most powerful nation on earth is confronting its worst economic crisis under the leadership of its most extremely liberal politician, who has virtually no experience of federal politics. That is not an opportunity but a catastrophe.

These are frank, even ungracious, words: they have the one merit that, unlike almost everything else written today about Obama, they will not require to be eaten in the future."

"Extraordinary prophecy" or insanity?

Every time somebody has claimed throughout history that the world was at an end ... guess what!

Obama, the Hype and the Hope.

So far, that's the summation.

We do join in the HOPE that he'll do an excellent job. He's smart enough. Does he have the experience, maturity, and skills--and the honesty with himself? We'll see.

I'm amazed at how much negativity you exude in your comments, Sail. We get it. You don't like Obama. As for hype, much of that is fabricated by the right. As for whether he'll do a good job, only time will tell. But in the meantime, why don't you concentrate on something good instead of constantyly being the antagonist on this website?

The next 8 years are going to be very hard on you. You might try therapy.

Consider the alternative and the Depression this country would be in if it weren't for the OVERWHELMING landslide of patriotic voters that stood up for their only choice - Obama.

Great history was made yesterday. We are so lucky to have been a part of it in our lifetimes.

"His consistent rhetorical device was to portray any skeptics of his own plans for 'action, bold and swift' as sour defeatists and 'cynics,' at odds with the American tradition."

The cynics and critics are at odds with the American "Yes We Can" *spirit* which was brilliantly rekindled by the Obama campaign. His inaugural address spelled out in no uncertain terms where we've strayed from that spirit in the last eight years and how he intends to bring this country back to its greatness.

President Obama "... revealed what it looks like when history turns on a pivot." He surely did. We chose the right man for the right time!

No, they aren't at all at odds with that spirit! They are just asking HOW we are going to do it!

Well, Obama has been telling you how he is going to do it. It's too bad that you aren't listening. You appear to be the kind of person who only hears what you want to hear. Too bad so sad for you. I pity you for the next 8 years will be very hard on you.

American *ingenuity*. Heard of it? Maybe by channeling your negativity into something positive and constructive, Sailboat, you'd generate some change you could believe in.

There is so much hype and completely irrational rhetoric:

1) We don't know whether anything will change all that much in the government--it would appear Obama does NOT plan to reverse the effective counter-terrorism and anti-terrorism policies of Bush, for example.

2) Obama is given credit for "accomplishing so much" and yet he hasn't accomplished anything other than winning elections, some by rather underhanded tricks such as investigating old divorce records.

3) Shouldn't we wait to see what he actually DOES before giving him credit for doing it?

I guess "accomplish" has a different meaning in your book. Changing the national consciousness and inspiring positive emotions during a very dark period in our nation seems an accomplishment. What did Bush bring to the table on day 1?

I suggest to you to turn the page as the rest of the nation has done ...

It is a new day ... a new time ... a new future. You have the choice to either get on board or be left behind. Our nation is an extended family. You either give your support or undermine its future.

Yes, indeed, "accomplished" has a different meaning.

You apprently buy the Nobel Peace Prize definition wherein those who TALK INCESSANTLY about peace and bad-mouth America win the prize while those who actually ACT to bring about peace by defeating the enemy are snubbed!

As I said, so far it's talk.

Wouldn't "counter-terrorism and anti-terrorism" be redundant? Or is it irrational rhetoric?

The perhaps you can withhold your criticism until such time as he does something that deserves to be criticized.

People like you make me sick. You ruined this once great nation and you seem to be happy hoping that Obama may fail and in the process we will all fail. I call people like you traitors.

It is wonderful to be proud of my country and countrymen after 8 years of bitterness. I may start attending church services again. George W. Bush soured me on so many aspects of life with his right wing use of religion and government. This is a new day.

Try attending a Unitarian Church. Spirituality without cramming God down your throat. Plus, they are very politically conscious. We had a rally downtown where I live to show our opposition to Proposition 8 in California. There were about 100 people there. 40 of the 100 were from my Unitarian church. It was pretty inspiring.

It is strange that the bitter people complain of 8 years of bitterness!

I suspect this bitterness is ingrained and you will just fine other things to be angry and hostile about.

Things to be angry and hostile about such as you are spewing all over the HuffPo blogs, SailFree?

Yet you won't answer when someone questions you on your hypocrisy.

You just like to hit and run.

Maybe the power of President Obama's rhetoric and his sheer buff physical presence can finally whip this republic of overfed clowns into shape.
