Obama Babies: Post-Inauguration Newborns Named After Barack And Michelle (PHOTOS)

The Huffington Post   Nour Akkad First Posted: 02/21/09 05:12 AM ET Updated: 05/25/11 02:00 PM ET

Barack Obama's November election kicked off a naming frenzy with newborns in Kenya and the United States.

The day after Obama's inauguration was no different. Three newborns in Kenya have already been named after the president and first lady....meanwhile, Antigua is renaming its highest mountin--Boggie Peak--after the new president.

'I hope that one day he too will become a great leader if not like the US president', said the mother.

Senator is kind of a freaking awesome name.

People really get their panties in a twist when it comes to baby names. I grew up with a weird name, and I've always loved it's uniqueness. To this day, I've never met anyone else in person with my name. I always felt sorry for all the Jessicas and Jennifers I knew at school.

A woman who gives over her body to a baby for nine months..and then at the end of all that comes the big labor of love, can name her child "treestump' if she so desires. My opinion.

How many more David, Matthew, Jeffrey, John or Joe's do we think the world needs?

Okay, I'll admit...if you name the child treestump, the child WILL have issues.

A name should be just that. Not words. Apple, Major, Peaches, these are confusing silly. My husbands name is Dickie. That's sad. Why would you do that to a child. Its almost abusive. But Barack is an actual name so its fine. On the other hand 'Senator', not such a good idea. Maybe she thought that was his first name>?

I'm not too crazy about "Senator" either. Besides, it's "President" now.

I've always liked the advice that when naming a child you should try prefacing the name with "Supreme Court Justice [fill in the blank]."

LOL! Good advice!

Or try to picture it on a movie marquis, the way Judy Garland did when she named her daughter Liza Minnelli!

Well, it's not quite a baby, though she's my baby, but I adopted a new kitty (Chloe) on Saturday, Michelle Obama's birthday, and gave her the middle of Michelle in honor of the occasion.

I love the Obama's but no way would I name my kid after them especially Barack.People of colo need to give their kids names that don't automatically disqualify or stereotype them.Plus Barack isn't a pretty name in my opinion.
02:20 AM on 01/22/2009
You're very ignorant. Obama became PRESIDENT with that name.

Therefore, it's VERY obviously NOT a disqualifier.

Oh yeah, then how do you explain the fact that our President is named Barack Husein Obama? You might want to think outside of the box.

Hopefully someone will be king enough to explain the Senator part, it's still better than naming your kid Adolf Hitler.

Ah, that's so nice. -- Senator eh? lol

THe funny thing is that Senator Obama sounds funky and Regal! LMAO..
12:58 AM on 01/22/2009
Here is a culture lesson for you guys..

Naming their kid Senator is most likely a language barrier. It's like the Hmong of CA who named their kids Road, Sister, Car, Baby, etc.. They heard the name and figured OK. They see Senator Obama and don't understand that the difference between nouns and pronouns.
Remember, in many places in Africa there are no written language, and this makes it more difficult the translate certain ideas.

Another cultural lesson - it's a Luo thing we do - and many times we do understand the difference between the pronoun and noun...sometimes we don't. Sometimes its the flamboyance...we are known for that. We have kids called Queen. I have a cousin called president but in swahili. His parents are quite knowledgeable about written english and luo.

Can't speak for Carolyne up there. But Kisumu is the city closest to K'ogelo. They are just used to, and have known the president, as Senator Obama for some time - especially from his last visit there. She may have just liked the ring to it. Looking at Linda I can probably safely say you can question her taste and burden she's placed on her kid (he will elicit a few laughs even among us) but her written language is not really part of the equation here. Ask her to tell you what a senator actually does that may be difficult. Believe me she'll get a fair share of comments from her own relatives similar to the ones on the post - she probably wanted funky and regal...

I mean I have had an american tell me that her name means "sweet" in swahili but Mandazi is actually a sort of donut...which is sweet but well doesn't quite carry the same meaning. not really a noun and adjective problem.
06:47 AM on 01/22/2009
And did I say we can be flambouyant? My kid may just be called Senator. It has this ring...especially with a luo accent.

Hmm. If I were still having babies, I'd do Malia and Sasha. Barack as a first name and Obama as a middle name for a boy.
