I Like ItI Don’t Like It

On President Obama's first full day in office, Stephen Colbert kicked off the media's 2012 election cycle with a visit from Chuck Todd.

Todd, promoting his book, How Barack Obama Won, declared Mitt Romney the front-runner for the 2012 Republican Presidential nomination.

"If you follow the history of the Republican party," Todd said, "Ronald Reagan finished second in '76, nominee in '80. George Bush finishes second in '80, nominee in '88. History says Mitt Romney will be the nominee in 2012."

Todd also said that if Republicans want to have a shot in 2012, they need to "not only have white people vote for them."

The funny thing is that despite Obama's time as President Romney will still have more accomplishments.

You're right. That's ridiculous.

****nomad27, Romney had more accomplishments than McCain, and he certainly had more than Palin, BUT he still didn't get any where close to being president nor vice president. If Mc had chosen Romney for his veep running mate, they could have talked more intelligently about the economy, but there is such a hatred between the two of them. Romney will not get the nomination; too many of his own party cannot stand him. They would rather lose than support Romney. He knows it, too. Oh, by the way, the repubs didn't like McCain either.

it will never be Romney because he will never make it out of the primary... the Christianists will bring him down cause of the Mormon thing.

why is Huffpo covering this like it's real news? It was humorous and doesn't deserve to be analyzed. Please, we need a break from the endless elction cycle.

Romney is part of the past, not part of the future.

His attachment to the Mormon religion, his inconsistency on issues, (easy to note on you tube), parody of himself and doesn't realize it ...and the use of the tired good old boys mantra, "conservative family values," doesn't fit the needs of America.

Another four years he'll appear even more antiquated.

But all of that is perfect for the old Republican party. I would do nothing to break that up.

I hope the Republicans regroup around the tired old conservative family values. It'll mean the continued death of the party.

As an Obama supporter,Romney was my greatest fear. He's got financial gravitas, and he wouldn't have picked Palin. The problem for Romney is getting past the right wing nuts that won't vote for him because he's a Mormon. He probably would have more support in the general populace than in his own party. Will they see the light and select Romney? Most of all my Republican friends (I used to be one now I'm a political agnostic!) favor Palin, and I'm pretty sure that would ensure a second Obama term. I don't know much about Jindal, but it wouldn't surprise me if they attempted to run him the same way they tried to run Alan Keyes in Illinois. I personally think Romney is is the only guy that could give Obama a run if the nut cases can get by his religion. If Obama can just keep us from being attacked and put half the people back to work in his first term,I think he's a lock for 2012. No President since Roosevelt (except for the Cuban missile crisis) has had more to contend with. If he can just stop the economic slide it will be an accomplishment in the first four years. It's refreshing to see that he's upsetting people on the hard left and the hard right. Maybe he'll surprise everyone and govern from the middle.

Isn't it ironic a guy who appears to be perfect for the GOP may not become its leader because he is not from the "right" religion?

From what I have heard Jindal is one of the wingnuts. He's pretty extreme to the right apparently.

PLEASE let it be Romney for the GOP in 2012!

Just think: a candidate as weak and conflicted as McCain was the PICK of the litter, this past electoral season. There was no single "runt of the litter"--this was a group that was ALL runts, all cynical and conflicted and pretty unpleasant each of them to many Republican voters. For these clowns to circle back to Romney - if indeed this were to happen - would be admitting that they have yet even to begin to regroup after getting their asses kicked in the 2006 mid-terms. Just as they struggled mightily to get up some enthusiasm for McCain, I want to see the elderly lilywhite plutocratic GOP struggle to get together over Mitt! Laffs aplenty...

I hope that doesn't turn out to be the case. Althouh Romney has some potential for laughs, I think that after the next 4 years, we owe it to the comedy industry to see to it that somebody with much greater potential to keep them rolling in the aisles is nominated as the republican candidate. The ONLY downside the Obama administration will be, I'm afraid, a barren wasteland for political comedy. This is going to be a tough adjustment for so many struggling comedians, especially after the target-rich environment provided by the stupendously moronic Bush administration, and again, I think we owe it to the comedians - nay, to the world! - to have someone who's more a source of laughs as the GOP frontrunner. Let's get to work on Palin 2012 right now.

Of course, it deosn't really matter who runs, because Obama will be re-elected, but at least we'll get a few chuckles out of it. Come back Sarah, we need you!!!! Put down that shotgun, get that next daughter knocked up, get your butt to Neiman Marcus, have Todd fire your state treasurer, demand funds for a Bridge to Oz, and start that campaign... time's a wastin'!!
