Connecticut Democrats want Sen. Joe Lieberman to apologize to President Barack Obama and Vice President Joe Biden for comments he made during the campaign criticizing both men and questioning their ability to govern.

The request was made in a Jan. 16 letter from Nancy DiNardo, chairwoman of the state party, on behalf of the Democratic State Central Committee.

"We hope and expect that you will work constructively with the new Democratic president and Congress, and will give your full and active support to the Democratic agenda to help enact the policies and reforms so badly needed to get America headed in the right direction," she wrote.

Some top Connecticut Democrats, angry with Lieberman over his public support of Republican Sen. John McCain for president, originally wanted the state party to censure the senator. But after much debate, they decided DiNardo should write Lieberman a letter outlining their concerns.

The one-page letter chastises the longtime Democrat, who won re-election in 2006 as an independent after losing the Democratic primary, for speaking at the Republican National Convention on behalf of McCain.

It says Lieberman's appearance undermined the efforts of Democratic candidates in Connecticut and across the country.

Lieberman, the Democrats' nominee for vice president in 2000, plans to respond to DiNardo's letter. It was unclear whether he'll issue an apology.

"Sen. Lieberman believes that this is not the time to look backward, but rather to unite behind the leadership of our new president to address the challenges facing Connecticut and our nation," said Marshall Wittmann, a Lieberman spokesman.

"Sen. Lieberman agrees with what President Obama so eloquently stated [Tuesday] that we must put an end to the politics of recrimination -- now is the time for unity, not for division," he said.

Lieberman and DiNardo met privately late last month, shortly after the state central committee agreed to send him the letter. DiNardo had called the meeting "very thoughtful and productive."

The state Democrats' letter also criticizes Lieberman for supporting controversial pastor John Hagee, a Texas evangelical preacher who has referred to the Roman Catholic Church as "the great whore" and called it a "false cult system."

"Your support of Republican candidates and of the views of Rev. John Hagee sent a message that you supported the failed policies of the past and supported views that are considered at best anti-Catholic and anti-gay," according to the letter. "These allegiances represent a fundamental deviation from the values that our candidates and supporters of the Democratic Party hold dear."

Please quit reporting on Lieberman. He deserves our censure, without any further publicity. He's only in the United States Senate to futher Israel's agenda, so we should let Israel's press/news further his agenda at their pleasure. Forget about Joe Lieberman, hopefully the voters in Connecticut will forget about him in 2012. Forget any apoligies he might give, they will be given only with a forked tongue

I'm in MA, work in CT, friends in CT (some Dems). My Dem friends loathe him. Won't say his name, refer to him at "the Traitor".

He's going to have a tough race in '12, if he decides to run again. Repubs don't trust him either.

Since Sen. Lieberman is not technically a Democrat this letter has probably already found its way into the trash in the senator's office.

Libermann will not be re-elect again. He has lost all ccredibility and dignity. Rather he apoligizes or not he will not be in congress long.

Don't be so sure. Connecticut republicans had no strong candidate last time and backed Lieberman against Ned Lamont. It could happen again.

Lieberman was probably shocked they even had the stones to send the letter.

But considering they are still in the "caving in to conservatives" mood, he'll probably just ignore it until they make him Senate Majority Leader in exchange for him being nice to them.

jsgaetano, did you and others who have missed the point even read the article. THE LETTER WAS FROM THE CONNECTICUT DEMOCRATIC PARTY.

Such is the sad state of the educational system in this country.

His constituants will take care of him. Just let him be who he is. The more he says, the less chance he has of returning to the Senate.

Noway he is going to win re-election next time without Republicans voting for him again.

Republicans voted for LIEberman over their own party's candidate last time, I don't see that happening again.

Why republicans will not vote for him this time ? Last time they votes as they knew their guy had no chance, and so instead of having a democrat who would oppose Bush, they opted for guy who would be in their camp. Still republican ticket would be a losing ticket, so they will again opt for lieberman

He won because he got nearly 98% of the Repub vote, but still a whopping 25% from Democrats. Without that 25%, he would have lost. You can bet he won't get that 25% again, apology or not. The people of Connecticut will not forget despite a belated, lackluster, and in their eyes, unfeeling apology.

Let's hope Lieberman is gone in four years -- Gillibrand in two. No more non-Democrats in the Democratic Party.

Comments like that sound like something we would hear from the R's. While they talk about a "Big Tent" that is all it is, talk.

We Dem's can handle those of different views. Gillibrand is a Dem, we the majority may not share all of, or many of her points of view, but she is a registered Dem, ran as a Dem in the primary, won the primary, and went on to win the seat.

Lieberman on the other hand, ran as a Dem lost the primary, ran as an independent, and calls himself by whatever label is convenient for his needs. Such as stand at the R's convention and stating: "Some of you may be wondering why a Democrat stands before you today . . ."

Sorry, Joe, you are not a Dem, you lost your primary. You sold out your self proclaimed party for personal gain hoping a a choice job in a McCain Administration.

But just as Bob Casey is pro-life he is non the less a Dem.

Throw this bum out!
This "Benedict Arnold" has no honor or integrity-
He's just another "slimey" GOP mole wrapped
in a very thin democrat blanket.
Its time to stick his ugly a** in the icy cold
with the rest of the GOP liars and thieves.
