VATICAN CITY — Pope Benedict XVI has lifted the excommunications of four traditionalist bishops, including that of a Holocaust denier whose rehabilitation sparked outrage among Jewish groups.

The four bishops were excommunicated 20 years ago after they were consecrated by the late ultraconservative Archbishop Marcel Lefebvre without papal consent _ a move the Vatican said at the time was an act of schism.

The Vatican said Saturday that Benedict rehabilitated the four as part of his efforts to bring Lefebvre's Society of St. Pius X back into the Vatican's fold.

But the move came just days after one of the four, British Bishop Richard Williamson, was shown in a Swedish state TV interview saying that historical evidence "is hugely against 6 million Jews having been deliberately gassed."

Jewish groups denounced the Vatican for having embraced a Holocaust denier and warned that the pope's decision would have serious implications for Catholic-Jewish relations as well as the pontiff's planned visit to the Holy Land later this year.

"I do not see how business can proceed as usual," said Rabbi David Rosen, Jerusalem-based head of interrelgious affairs at the American Jewish Committee and a key Vatican-Jewish negotiator.

He called for the pope or a senior adviser to issue a "clear condemnation" of all Holocaust denials and deniers.

Shimon Samuels of the Simon Wiesenthal Center in Paris said he understood the German-born pope's desire for Christian unity, but said Benedict could have excluded Williamson. He warned that his rehabilitation will have a "political cost" for the Vatican.

"I'm certain as a man who has known the Nazi regime in his own flesh, he understands you have to be very careful and very selective," Samuels said.

The Vatican spokesman, the Rev. Federico Lombardi, said Williamson's views were "absolutely indefensible." But he denied that rehabilitating Williamson implied that the Vatican shared them.

"They are his personal ideas ... that we certainly don't share but they have nothing to do with the issue of the excommunication and the removal of the excommunication," Lombardi told AP Television News.

Williamson's comments cast a cloud over the pope's efforts to normalize relations with the Swiss-based Society of St. Pius X, which Lefebvre founded in 1969. Lefebvre was opposed to the liberalizing reforms of the 1962-65 Second Vatican Council, particularly its ecumenical outreach and its decision to allow Mass to be celebrated in local languages instead of Latin.

Despite concerns from liberal Catholics, Benedict has made clear from the start of his pontificate that he wanted to reintegrate the group back into the Vatican's fold, meeting within months of his election with the current head of the society, Bishop Bernard Fellay.

In 2007, Benedict answered one of Fellay's key demands by relaxing restrictions on celebrating the Latin Mass. In lifting the excommunication decree, he answered the society's second condition for beginning theological discussions about normalizing relations.

The decree from the Vatican's Congregation for Bishops said Benedict "remits" the automatic excommunication that the four bishops incurred and said the 1988 decree declaring their consecrations a schismatic act had no legal standing any longer.

In a statement Saturday, Fellay, who is one of the rehabilitated bishops, expressed his gratitude to Benedict and said the decree would help the whole Roman Catholic Church.

"Thanks to this gesture, Catholics attached to tradition throughout the world will no longer be unjustly stigmatized and condemned for having kept the faith of their fathers," Fellay said in a letter to his supporters.

Fellay, meanwhile, has distanced the society from Williamson's remarks about the Holocaust, saying Williamson only had authority to discuss matters of faith and that he was personally responsible for his own opinions.

But Fellay also berated Swedish state television, accusing it in a Jan. 21 letter of having introduced the Holocaust issue in the interview "with the obvious intention of misrepresenting and maligning," the society.

While Williamson's comments may be offensive and erroneous, they are not an excommunicable offense, said Monsignor Robert Wister, professor of church history at Immaculate Conception School of Theology at Seton Hall University in New Jersey.

"To deny the Holocaust is not a heresy even though it is a lie," he said. "The excommunication can be lifted because he is not a heretic, but he remains a liar."

The Society of St. Pius X, which is based in Menzingen, Switzerland, has six seminaries, three universities and 70 primary and secondary schools around the globe. Aside from the four bishops, it boasts 463 priests and 160 seminarians.

The status of the society's priests remains unsettled. While their ordinations are valid, the Church considers them "illicit" because they were ordained by someone who didn't have the authority, Lombardi said. Pope Paul VI suspended Lefebvre from priestly duties in 1976, but he continued ordaining priests illicitly.

Because they are working with right wing extreme religious groups of other faiths to undermine the Constitution to make their religious nonsense the supreme law. They have done it before.

They are destroying the lessons of Vatican II and they have done that before. It can take 300 years before a council has been fully implemented.

This bodes ill for we are going to have a struggle pushed upon us by a Church who is putting in positions of authority those who try to white-wash the atrocities of Adolf Hitler but condemn those who uphold the US Constitution and those who voted for President Obama.

He is not a holocaust DENIER. He has said that the total package of holocaust industry is not acceptable unless research shows otherwise. Research, which is banned in many parts of the world under pressure from Zionists. Where is the evidence that 6 million, not 5, 4, or 1 million were killed? Where is the evidence that gas chambers (which I have visited) were not used to burn the corpses of the dead in order to prevent epidemics and diseases. do I also become a "denier" by just posing these questions? Remember that the claims about this package were only made public 10 years AFTER the end of the War.

You are either ignorant or a liar. Reports of what was found at the death camps were in the newspapers immediately. I have seen them. If you want to do that forbidden research, start by going to the library and looking at the microfilm. The Zionists aren't going to keep you from doing that -- only hate and a desire to remain ignorant will.

No, you don't become a denier by asking those questions, those questions show where you are coming from. To me it doesn't look like simple lack of information, that is easily overcome because there are libraries full of pictures showing the process. Hitler's own words, along with those of his henchmen, will tell you the story if you wish to be informed. No, I think you may have a problem of anti-semitism. To frame it as a question of whether it is one million or six is to hide your issue, to deny the purpose behind the numbers people still bear in their skin. This Austrian pope may have a problem, too. Ten years after the war, 1955? That is a statement lacking basis in fact, a lie. The Holocaust story was told as it was happening to a small extent and then fully told as the camps were liberated in 1944-45. That is undeniable.

Well, this is troublesome in many ways. There have always been conflicting/conflated numbers concerning the number of Africans trafficked during the Transatlantic Slave Trade ranging from 10 million - 30 million - 50 million. History has not settled on a number and the consensus changes from time to time amongst historians.

THAT SAID. I am not a Holocaust denier...let me say that FIRST. However, a figure of 6 million has been settled upon for some time now. I don't know where it came from or how it was derived. Perhaps there are records to substantiant, perhaps not.

My point is, no one ever calls anyone a Black Slavery denier when the numbers concerning slavery are questioned and debated so why does society call someone a Jewish Holocaust denier when these numbers are debated, questioned, interrogated? I really do not understand this phenomenon. A holocaust is an act of destruction with mass genocide. But wait, isn't the number more than 6 million and more like 11 million. Why do we separate out the 6? What happened to the 5 million others in this narrative?

I am seriously confused here. No need to try to "tell me off." It won't work and is unnecessary.

Repeating misrepresentations doesn't make them any more truthful.
There were the pictures available after the extermination camps were liberated in 1945 . There were the mass graves, testimony of survivors, meticulous written records of the Nazis themselves, testimony at the Nurenburg trials - all revealed long before 1955. There is nothing to stop anyone from doing serious research.

Part 2

Comes now Benedict to undo what the noble John XXIII began, and the beginning of the end of not just the papacy, but the church of Rome itself. This ignoble institution, responsible for the deaths of a billion or more in the last fourteen hundred years since it was created in the bowels of Constantine's syphilitic mind has neevr been the 'true' church. The Celtic? Yes. The original Jerusalem Church headed by James and solely dynastic? Absolutely. Dynsties imply blood inheritance alone, both implicit and explicit, and no one inherited the crown beyond the living relatives of Jesus and his wife, Mary the Magdala; three children in all. Three with descendants still very much alive.

There is said to be only one more Pope to be named before the end...

"The End," is nothing but a paranoid fantasy. It is a tool to keep people afraid and obedient to all sorts of pretenders. It is utter primitive superstition.

These despicable Holocaust deniers NEVER stop lying to themselves or to the rest of us. Germany's own records proved the gas chambers were real and that indeed, 6 million jews were annihilated during World War II. Jews never said that all 6 million were killed in the gas chambers. Many of them were shot and pushed into mass graves. Some starved to death. Many died of dysentery and other illnesses. Williamson's absurd 'scientific' explanations about 'chimneys and cyanide' are simply red herrings disguised as hard evidence. The fact that the Vatican continues to set out these pronouncements, letting deniers, pedophiles, racists, and other assorted miscreants off the hook for their actions, is further proof just how corrupt the Church has become. It is SHAMEFUL.

What I heard the man say was there were 300 to 400 thousand Jews killed in nazi Germany.

He does not believe that 6 million jews died in Nazi Germany .

He does not believe the Jews who perished in nazi Germany died in gas chambers.

I'm not sure that is what he thinks....I see him not denying the Holocaust, but the 6 million figure. There really is no evidence that that is a correct figure....in fact, it is generally considered a gross exaggeration...The issue here, is not the event, but the overstated numbers...At any rate, why is the Catholic Church defending anyone about this? What about the millions of Russians, Gays, Gypsies, mental handicapped........

No evidence? You REFUSE to look!

"I wonder if there would be the same outrage if someone denied the massacre of Palestinian people at the hands of the Israeli government?"

I feel totally outraged at the massacre of the Palestinian people, and can't understand why most of the people I know don't feel the same. People being killed in such huge numbers and then viewed as just "collateral damage." Where is the respect for ALL human life not just Israelis. There are many Jews, here and in Israel that are totally against what is happening to the Palestinian people. How can anyone who claims to be a good Jew, Christian or Muslim see this as anything other than outrageous.

It's easy if you try
No hell below us
Above us only sky
Imagine all the people
Living for today

Imagine there's no countries
It isn't hard to do
Nothing to kill or die for
And no religion too
Imagine all the people
Living life in peace

Just a clarification for you. Buddha is not a god, he is not the creator of the universe. He was a human teacher (guru) who was said to have acheived enlightenment. His followers do not worship him, they attempt to acheive enlightenment through his teachings.
