DENVER — Disgraced evangelical leader Ted Haggard's former church disclosed Friday that the gay sex scandal that caused his downfall extends to a young male church volunteer who reported having a sexual relationship with Haggard _ a revelation that comes as Haggard tries to repair his public image.

Brady Boyd, who succeeded Haggard as senior pastor of the 10,000-member New Life Church in Colorado Springs, told The Associated Press that the man came forward to church officials in late 2006 shortly after a Denver male prostitute claimed to have had a three-year cash-for-sex relationship with Haggard.

Boyd said an "overwhelming pool of evidence" pointed to an "inappropriate, consensual sexual relationship" that "went on for a long period of time ... it wasn't a one-time act." Boyd said the man was in his early 20s at the time. He said he was certain the man was of legal age when it began.

Reached Friday night, Haggard declined to comment and said all interviews would have to be arranged through a publicist for HBO, which is airing a documentary about him this month.

Boyd said the church reached a legal settlement to pay the man for counseling and college tuition, with one condition being that none of the parties involved discuss the matter publicly.

Boyd said a Colorado Springs TV station reached him Thursday to say the young man was planning to provide a detailed report of his relationship with Haggard to the station. Boyd said the church preferred to keep the matter private, but it was the man's decision to go public.

The disclosure comes as Haggard, 52, is about to give a series of high-profile interviews to promote the cable documentary about his time in exile. He is scheduled to appear on CNN's Larry King Live on Thursday, the date of the documentary's premiere, and already has taped "The Oprah Winfrey Show."

In early 2007, New Life Church disclosed that an investigation uncovered new evidence that Haggard engaged in "sordid conversation" and "improper relationships" _ but didn't go into detail. Earlier, a church board member had said there was no evidence that Haggard had sexual relations with anyone but Mike Jones, the former male prostitute.

Story continues below

Haggard confessed to undisclosed "sexual immorality" after Jones' allegations and resigned as president of the National Association of Evangelicals and from New Life Church, where he faced being fired.

Anticipating criticism of the settlement with the former church volunteer, Boyd said Friday that it was in the best interests of all involved. He would not name the volunteer or the settlement amount.

"It wasn't at all a settlement to make him be quiet or not tell his story," Boyd said. "Our desire was to help him. Here was a young man who wanted to get on with his life. We considered it more compassionate assistance _ certainly not hush money. I know what's what everyone will want to say because that's the most salacious thing to say, but that's not at all what it was."

He said that "secondarily, it's not great for our church either" that the story be told. Boyd said Haggard knew about the settlement two years ago.

In a letter e-mailed Friday to New Life Church members, Boyd said of the settlement and agreement not to talk: "This decision was made not as an attempt to conceal wrongdoings, but to protect him from those who would seek to exploit him. His actions now suggest that he has changed his mind."

The letter said the church "received reports of a number of incidents of inappropriate behavior" after Haggard's fall. "In each case, we have tried our very best to do the right thing each time, including disciplinary action when appropriate."

Boyd said the "inappropriate behavior" referred to the man who was the volunteer involved with Haggard. After Haggard's fall, another church staff member resigned after admitting to what was described as "sexual misconduct."

Boyd said the church will not take action against the man if he tells his story in the press.

"We have legal standing to do that, but not the desire to," he said.

Boyd said he had spoken to the man once and came away with the impression that he was speaking out because of the documentary. "I think what caused this young man to be a bit aggravated was Ted being seen as a victim, when he himself had experienced a great deal of hurt," Boyd said. "I seriously doubt this man would have come forward if the documentary had not been made."

A spokeswoman for the documentary, "The Trials of Ted Haggard," declined to comment Friday.

David Clohessy, national director of SNAP, the Survivors Network of those Abused by Priests _ which has largely focused on the Catholic sexual abuse scandal but also speaks out on cases involving Protestant clergy _ said the new disclosures about Haggard are more disturbing because they involves a church volunteer.

"Technically, legally, they were both adults," Clohessy said. "Psychologically and emotionally, Haggard was dramatically more powerful. ... By definition, any sexual contact between a congregant and minister is inherently abusive and manipulative."

In an AP interview this month before an appearance in front of TV critics in California, Haggard described his sexuality as complex and something that can't be put into "stereotypical boxes."

REALLY? ... IT WASN'T HUSH MONEY??? ... even though "the church has legal standing to take action against the man if he tells his story in the press"!

And the Catholic Church has also been "desiring to help" the victims of their pedophile priests, by giving them "more compassionate assistance" ... once their HUSH was no longer HIDDEN?!

I agree, then why have him sign a contract that prohibits him to "not say anything"? Remember this took place in '06 and 2+ years later they say it is ok for him to speak out? Why don't they come out and say that they are going after Haggard for collaborating on the documentary?

IMHO, if they had kept quite, they would have attracted less attention to this situation. What they have done is added fuel to their fire and I'm sure HBO is eating all these up; I would not be surprised if their viewership doubles as the result of this.

Such great joy should not be taken in the personal failings of a man.

We are all fallen individuals. None of us are infallible.

But we should be careful not to judge the church, which does much good in the world, by this man's failings.

We should judge churches just as quickly as they judge us.

Evangelical = Judgemental

I have NO sympathy for this church. Judge away people.

Does the church really do "much good in the world"?

The American protestant church spawned from John Calvin. Nothing good ever came of Calvanism. They have taken the teachings of Jesus and squeezed all the love and life out of it. In its place they leave nothing but hate and fear.

Honestly, where is the good in protestantism?

Where is the good in any faith?

You are correct. Joy should not be taken over others' pain. Has this church done harm? Or rather, has it (the church) ever judged others? If so, then we shall judge [it] as others have judged us.

Okay - I'll judge the church by the failings of MILLIONS of people, ranging from the pedophile priests and their enables, to the self-righteous practitioners of the various faiths whose willingness to kill those of different faiths seems all too easy to provoke.

I don't deny that the various churches of the world have their positive attributes. But nearly all are swamped by the scale of misery and self-destruction that they have foisted on those with whom they have to share this planet.

Peace,

Dtuchman

Who's taking joy? I read no job in these posts.

That's a pub/religious zealot talking point.

I love it when Haggard: 'described his sexuality as complex and something that can't be put into "stereotypical boxes."'

Um, Ted? Believe it or not, you are not the only person to whom this is true. Maybe is you had not been so judgemental toward others who share this very same condition in the first place, then maybe you wouldn't be having such a hard time now. It is time for you to wake up and realize that all sexuality is "complex and can't be put into stereotypical boxes."

But I thought his co-evangelist preachers had "cured" him of his Homosexual tendencies.

Maybe gayness isn't a "disease" that can be cured by individuals with no psychological training. Go figure.

Maybe it can't--and shouldn't--be "cured" anyway.

Will the man stop already. He needs to admit that he's gay and move on with the truth of his life. He's in a position to save a lot of young people who have been taught conflicting ideologies about homosexuality. God don't make no garbage and if you're gay you should be able to be who you are. Gay is not a disease.

I would personally like to thank Ted Haggard for proving once and for all that gay people do not choose their orientation. Here is the last person on Earth that would want to be attracted to someone of the same sex, and yet he is uncontrollably drawn to them. The sooner religious practitioners realize this simple (obvious) fact, the better off this country will be.

Ted, TED! If it quacks like a duck, and walks like a duck...........then! etc etc etc Mrs. Haggard should request HE pay for the AIDS testing each year for the rest of her life in her divorce decree.

FYI -- HIV is usually detectable by HIV test within 6mos of exposure -- if they were to get divorced and presumably stop having sex, beyond that period, he couldn't infect her. (also there are many places around the country where free HIV tests are available)

While 9-11 was an atrocious act of terror, to me an equally bad offense was the rape of thousands of young americans by hundreds of clergy. The worst part is that we continue to support their organizations through the tax code, and allow their corrupt mythology to penetrate our governance.

Yes, they speak of helping people who are down , and out, but shove the property tax burden down their gullible throats, while they build multi million dollar churches, and remove property from the tax rolls, and this removal has to be made up by hard working families.

Here is the thing... If I gave to his ministry, then I would have gotten a tax-deduction thet went to fund this behaviour. Why do/should we subsidize religious entitities with tax dollars?

Ah but the cover up protects the multi-million dollar non-profit (New Life church) which is the real point of course. This stuff about honesty and all takes back seat to the important things.

Now, is it just my imagination or does it seem to be that an awful lot of God-fearing, morally righteous men of the cloth are being unfairly labeled sexually degenerate by the Eastern Media Establishment?

These are great men, peeps! Hundreds of thousands of God-fearing, morally righteous men, women and children attend their stadium-sized churches, watch them on TV, download their every pearl on to their iPod's and MP3's, buy their books and suffer along with them when they confess, publically, cry bitter tears and then, do it all over again.

I think we should all just back off a little bit. (Just like their young "friends" want them to), and remember there is room enough for all of them in Alaska where they can chase sheep and moose to their hearts content.
