DENVER — Disgraced evangelical leader Ted Haggard's former church disclosed Friday that the gay sex scandal that caused his downfall extends to a young male church volunteer who reported having a sexual relationship with Haggard _ a revelation that comes as Haggard tries to repair his public image.

Brady Boyd, who succeeded Haggard as senior pastor of the 10,000-member New Life Church in Colorado Springs, told The Associated Press that the man came forward to church officials in late 2006 shortly after a Denver male prostitute claimed to have had a three-year cash-for-sex relationship with Haggard.

Boyd said an "overwhelming pool of evidence" pointed to an "inappropriate, consensual sexual relationship" that "went on for a long period of time ... it wasn't a one-time act." Boyd said the man was in his early 20s at the time. He said he was certain the man was of legal age when it began.

Reached Friday night, Haggard declined to comment and said all interviews would have to be arranged through a publicist for HBO, which is airing a documentary about him this month.

Boyd said the church reached a legal settlement to pay the man for counseling and college tuition, with one condition being that none of the parties involved discuss the matter publicly.

Boyd said a Colorado Springs TV station reached him Thursday to say the young man was planning to provide a detailed report of his relationship with Haggard to the station. Boyd said the church preferred to keep the matter private, but it was the man's decision to go public.

The disclosure comes as Haggard, 52, is about to give a series of high-profile interviews to promote the cable documentary about his time in exile. He is scheduled to appear on CNN's Larry King Live on Thursday, the date of the documentary's premiere, and already has taped "The Oprah Winfrey Show."

In early 2007, New Life Church disclosed that an investigation uncovered new evidence that Haggard engaged in "sordid conversation" and "improper relationships" _ but didn't go into detail. Earlier, a church board member had said there was no evidence that Haggard had sexual relations with anyone but Mike Jones, the former male prostitute.

Haggard confessed to undisclosed "sexual immorality" after Jones' allegations and resigned as president of the National Association of Evangelicals and from New Life Church, where he faced being fired.

Anticipating criticism of the settlement with the former church volunteer, Boyd said Friday that it was in the best interests of all involved. He would not name the volunteer or the settlement amount.

"It wasn't at all a settlement to make him be quiet or not tell his story," Boyd said. "Our desire was to help him. Here was a young man who wanted to get on with his life. We considered it more compassionate assistance _ certainly not hush money. I know what's what everyone will want to say because that's the most salacious thing to say, but that's not at all what it was."

He said that "secondarily, it's not great for our church either" that the story be told. Boyd said Haggard knew about the settlement two years ago.

In a letter e-mailed Friday to New Life Church members, Boyd said of the settlement and agreement not to talk: "This decision was made not as an attempt to conceal wrongdoings, but to protect him from those who would seek to exploit him. His actions now suggest that he has changed his mind."

The letter said the church "received reports of a number of incidents of inappropriate behavior" after Haggard's fall. "In each case, we have tried our very best to do the right thing each time, including disciplinary action when appropriate."

Boyd said the "inappropriate behavior" referred to the man who was the volunteer involved with Haggard. After Haggard's fall, another church staff member resigned after admitting to what was described as "sexual misconduct."

Boyd said the church will not take action against the man if he tells his story in the press.

"We have legal standing to do that, but not the desire to," he said.

Boyd said he had spoken to the man once and came away with the impression that he was speaking out because of the documentary. "I think what caused this young man to be a bit aggravated was Ted being seen as a victim, when he himself had experienced a great deal of hurt," Boyd said. "I seriously doubt this man would have come forward if the documentary had not been made."

A spokeswoman for the documentary, "The Trials of Ted Haggard," declined to comment Friday.

David Clohessy, national director of SNAP, the Survivors Network of those Abused by Priests _ which has largely focused on the Catholic sexual abuse scandal but also speaks out on cases involving Protestant clergy _ said the new disclosures about Haggard are more disturbing because they involves a church volunteer.

"Technically, legally, they were both adults," Clohessy said. "Psychologically and emotionally, Haggard was dramatically more powerful. ... By definition, any sexual contact between a congregant and minister is inherently abusive and manipulative."

In an AP interview this month before an appearance in front of TV critics in California, Haggard described his sexuality as complex and something that can't be put into "stereotypical boxes."

Let's see... a young man of age, who was not an employee, has a consentual affair with Haggard, and the church is going to pay an undisclosed amount for his "counseling and school tuition"? You have got to be kidding me. If this was any other business, the dude would have found himself laughed out of his own attorneys office for trying to exploit this situation. This is the megachurch's just desserts: paying out a large sum based on their idealism, not any wrong-doing on their, or their employee's, part.

Very well put. Isn't that what most of this all comes down to, money. Those who want it and those who want more and more of it.

Remember, this is more akin to WWE than mainstream religion. These high-profile preachers are more con artist than pastor. It's the same scam as portrayed in Elmer Gantry fifty years ago.

That is true. But they have laid claim to ownership of Christianity. They have fooled millions who believe they are Christians and not they hypocrits that Jesus rejected. They elected one of their own to president and he ruined the world.

Evangelicals are a very dangerous and corrupt sect, and Christians and Americans need to reject them.

The problem for Haggard isn't that he's gay, it's that he's a gay Evangelical. That's like an Orthodox rabbi having an addiction to barbecued pork ribs, it basically disqualifies you from your job.

Oh wait, I forgot, he's a Republican. That means he's "not gay", as Larry Craig would say.

His church should offer to refund their contributions to anyone who asks. Now that would be Christian. Or.. is it a Ponzi scheme too?

One last comment. Let's hope this latest accusation stops HBO from making this man a martyr and more wealthy than he is already.

Let's hope HBO decides to cut their losses and never invest in a religious wingnut again. Better yet, keep out of religion period.

First, I feel empathy for Haggard. It's not easy being gay when you're out and proud, it's even harder when you're not. I don't like what he did in the name of Christanity any more than the rest of you, but I'm not going to let it get in the way of feeling compasion for him.

Don't blame the religion. It is nothing more than the conduit for a societies' attitudes on issues. Blame the people around him, including the general population. Between his church and the people taking joy in his suffering, it all reeks of homophobia to me. I'm just happy he didn't get caught in a bath house or a men's room. Then you guys would be making jokes as well as spreading hate. This tells me that our straight allies have no compasion for those who must have lived a really hard life to lead to such self loathing. In some ways he's a victim of brainwashing.

It's our fault he's a lying jerk because society forgot to put the fabric softener in the brainwashing machine?

There's a very big difference between spreading hate and maliciously harpooning people who take themselves too seriously.

You are right when you say it is not easy being gay and out, and yes it is hard to be in the closet (every gay person, myself included, understands this perfectly), but he choose to say what he said and he choose to preach what he preached! He pretended to speak for the christian god and tried to spread the hatred he felt for himself around...

You say blame the people around him. Are you kidding me? I blame him!

It is disgusting to hear someone speak the filth this man has spoken about homosexuality. But to then find out he's gay himself!! He has fueled hatred towards the GLBT community, while in fact he was part of it and that's just unforgiveable to me.

The only thing he is a victim of in my book is his own twisted mind. You can feel compassion for him... good for you. I feel disgust. And yes, joy in his suffering... nothing homophobic about it. I just believe a hate-monger like him does not deserve my compassion.

"Self loathing"? Probably

"Brainwashing"? Most likely

"Homophobia"? Absolutely!

Ain't fundamentalist religion----no matter the flavor-----just GRAND???

1. He wasn't just "Joe the Gay" who happened to be struggling through life because of his sexuality. He was the leader of the nation's largest group of evangelicals and was one of the leaders and faces to the anti-gay movement. He deserves a public flogging.

2. Yes, we realize that he's a victim of brainwashing. That's the point of these sensational stories and documentaries such as "Jesus Camp," to show just how far the churches go to brainwash their congregations to rise against and squash the "liberal gay agenda."

3. Religion is not merely "the conduit for a societies' (sic) attitudes on issues." A lot of religious people feel sympathetic towards gays, but simply won't acknowledge their social equality because they feel that the gays are constantly living in sin. They quote the scripture ad nauseum about how homosexuality is immoral and goes against God. Then they offer to "fix" them in one of their many conversion clinics.

It's touching that you can find compassion for this guy, who was a top level hate monger. You are wrong in just about every sentence of your second paragraph. Of course people should blame religion because religion, rather than just being a conduit as you suggest, absolutely forms the attitudes of society on issues such as these.

It is the hypocrisy that reasonable hate and ridicule. The Haggard's of the world ARE the brainwasher's that force (usually) men into airport/highway bathrooms.

But, if you can turn the other cheek, good for you.

Count how many times Haggard says "Fabulous" in the documentary "Je$u$ Camp".....I know, I apologize for the $tereotype, but with as many times as he said it, you could play a drinking game to it and been drunk within the last 15 minutes.......

Thank you, thank you, well said. You are correct in you assumption.

Love thy neighbor, no matter what. Organized religion would not be so bad if the most of the followers were not so hypocrites. James Dobson for instance after what he and his followers did back in August,( praying for rains and flood) to interrupt the DNC in Denver, well that action spoke volumes.

Bet this new guy is one of many. It's unlikely he was able to satisfy his needs with 2 guys all his adult life. Repression only exacerbates the problem which is why many celibate priests give in. Since he is going public wih his HBO special (and playing the victim) I bet more will come out of the woodwork.

Why can't Haggard just admit to himself and everybody else that he's gay, and get on with his life? There's no shame in being the way that God created him to be.

Haggard is of course a gay man, but in his church he was embodiment of the anti-gay agenda.
There is probaly no way of counting the amount of lives he destroyed by his anti-gay tirades, while being a gay man. It defies logic or san*ty.

It's almost a tragedy. Instead of coming to terms with who they are and moving to a gay-friendly city and living a happy, judgement-free life, they go to extreme lengths to try to cover up. I would feel sorry for them except they intentionally cause damage by demonizing other gay people.

The television ministries DO make hundreds of millions of dollars through donations every year... all of which obtained on Government OWNED airwaves is TAX FREE. It wouldn't surprise ne at all to hear that Swiss Banks is where much of that money ends up!

Saw a "Minister" in Trinity Broadcast Network recently "selling" "Miracle Manna Wafers". His wife was in studio with him reading testemonial letters about those miraculous wafers. They appear to cure everything from Aids and arthritis to bank accounts and debt!

These modern day snake-oil salesmen make incredible amounts of money on the OUR airwaves. That all their ill gotten $$$$ is tax free is outrageuos!

He would send all sorts of stuff in the mail to people like packets of "holy water", packets of dirt "from Israel", or posters of himself holding up his hand so the recepient could put their hand on his and FEEL the power of his prayer! It's all a sham!

Why is it that these guys are always caught in a scandal with young men.... or boys? It's pathetic considering the staunch moral values of the church.

Why do men find young women more attractive than older women? It's not a pediphelia issue. Men, and women, are usually attracted to those younger than they are because the signs of aging are usually not so pretty.

I'm sorry you were molested by your pastor, but quit projecting and libeling a poor man who is struggling to find his way out of the closet.

He is gay and has NEVER been accused of pedophilia, but you keep conflating the two. You are perpetuating hate; go talk to someone please, for your family's sake.
