Move Over, Hooters: New 'Breastaurants' Are Moving In On Market

Good restaurateurs know how to sell the sizzle, and few chains have done a better job of hustling the stuff over the past 2½ decades than Hooters.

But now, inspired by the success of Hooters' wings-toting female staff, restaurants such as Twin Peaks, Bone Daddy's and other local operators with cute waitresses, cold beer and a male clientele are, well, busting out all over. And Texas, where the sole Hooters' franchisee is both the chain's sales leader and No. 1 in locations nationally, is a prime market for the "breastaurant" concept.

OMG! They're right. Someone breastaurants are a southern thing. I just check out the Hooters locations map. They drop off fast west of the Mississippi, and the west coast is a desert. Poor Alaska - no hooters at all. Although there definitely is a boob there.

Does just about every other culture you can name also objectify women, many in ways far worse than we see in the West? Yes.

Does this mean objectification of women is acceptable? No.

Is the food at Hooters virtually inedible? Yes.

You, obviously, have never been in a Hooters! "Gomer Pyle populaton" - once in a blue moon. Execs of all types - absolutely and in the majority. Men like to gape at big breasts and swinging booties and that's what Hooters offers. In Atlanta, one Hooters is actually the meeting place of a Church men's Bible study group and increased attendance ten-fold when they moved the venue. (This is not a joke, btw!) Hooters thrives for the same reason the Chippendales franchises do. Both sexes like to see the other in semi-dress! Right or wrong, nobody forces you into these places.

Oh, please, everyone. Pretty harmless stuff. I've never been to Hooters, but it all seems pretty innocuous. It's in a way like the old Miss America contest. I know a very savvy woman who represented her home state in the '70s, then toured USO with Bob Hope. All a T&A show, but just playful and fun, according to her. Plus Miss A put her through school on scholarships and made her quite a few show biz connections she used to get her career going. She got a Masters degree and had a long performing career. She chuckles and says Hooters does the same thing, but for more women. Most of her old gal friends, despite the "dumb-blond" images, did similar things and had similar points of view, she says.

Years ago, I read a review of a naked lunch place in New Orleans that served food and drinks. The reviewer shook things up by actually ordering lunch. Seems they had to sneak out the back to get a tired sandwich from the 7-11 next door.

There are also topless coffee shops. Dirty old men sitting one to a table ogling the topless waitresses serving coffee and individually wrapped grocery store donuts. Saw one such place highlighted in local news in Maine. It was beyond pathetic.

The closest I've come to going into a Hooters is to get some of their frozen wings at the grocery store. They were alright. As far as breastaraunts go, I am happy if they keep 'em off the streets. I have an Amsterdam attitude. I've been there twice, and there is more going on than waitresses in skimpy attire. I took a city tour bus, and the matronly tour guide even pointed out the red light district. I'm not kidding. She said, "and that's where the ladies sit in the windows."

BTW - I can't recall the name, but i read a few months ago about a restaurant in Tokyo that does exactly what you describe. Something to the effect of treating their woman customers like royalty. The all male staff is available to listen to whatever their clients wish to discuss.
