Paterson Lost Chance To Eliminate His Major Political Threat

I Like ItI Don’t Like It

Talking to New York political observers these past few days, one gets the sense that the process of filling Hillary Clinton's Senate seat was something akin to a circular firing squad. None of the principal figures came out looking good, save, perhaps, Kirsten Gillibrand.

The types of embarrassments are different for each individual involved. Caroline Kennedy's abrupt exit from the political stage spurred questions about her private life and why she ever got into this saga in the first place.

"I don't think there was ever a come-to-Jesus moment with her," said one well-connected Democrat. "I get the sense that no one took her aside and said: 'This is a dirty business. You might get a bit of a bump because of your lineage, but people will come after you."

For David Paterson, the problems created by the Senate replacement process may be far more lasting. Postponing the decision until Clinton was confirmed, and speaking frequently in public about his deliberations on the matter, helped turn the process into a circus. And having floated various reasons for Kennedy's withdrawal, he engendered the animosity of that family's myriad political backers. But the greatest misstep may end up being Paterson's failure to remove the major threat to his own political future.

Andrew Cuomo, New York's attorney general, was reportedly passed over for the Senate seat because favoring the Cuomo family over the Kennedy clan was seen as impolitic. And while sources insist that Cuomo is not thrilled about, or at this time interested in, running against Paterson in the 2010 gubernatorial primary, a new poll out shows the window of opportunity widening.

"Governor David Paterson's lead over Attorney General Andrew Cuomo in a potential 2010 gubernatorial primary fell from 23 points in December to just two points today," reads a Siena Research Institute study out on Monday. "For the first time since May, Cuomo has a better favorable/unfavorable rating than Paterson..."

Many factors catalyzed the drop in Paterson's numbers, including budget issues that have plagued New York. But the Senate selection process clearly played a role. If there is a silver lining for the Governor, it is that his favorability ratings are still very strong, and it's hard to see Cuomo mounting a primary challenge without more political dissatisfaction creating a path in that direction.

"Paterson has a 60-23 percent favorable rating, down slightly from 63-22 percent last month. Cuomo has a 64-17 percent favorable rating (up from 59-24 percent last month), his highest ever in a Siena Poll. Giuliani's favorable rating is up to 59-33 percent, from last month's 50-43 percent."

Interesting that HP isn't blaring out Fred Dicker's story in a huge headline: Paterson is a LIAR.

Aw, come on, no one ever accused Paterson of being the brightest bulb in the batch. After the last election, he planned on an easy 4 years as a latch key kid under Spitzer.....most of us in NY had no idea who he was.....and apparently with good reason. Spitzer's selfish and stupid activities led to the moronic situationb we are faced with in Albany.....fortunately, he will lose in the primary in two years and than it will be good riddance!

New York magazine has an interesting piece on the appointment debacle. Paterson apparently wanted to look like he'd "bucked" the Kennedy's all along. According to NYM, after Kennedy called him to writhdraw, he suggested that she stay in and he would later announce that the appointment wasn't going to her. Huh?

My disappointment in Paterson comes from the trashing that he and his staff did of Kennedy after her withdrawl. He recently said he was concerned about the "leaks" about her. Peculiar...given that many of the derogatory statements came directly from him. I won't be voting for him...or his Senate appointee.

You got that right!

The someone elses are: Cuomo/Schumer/Clinton. Ya know the same authors of the "Dream". Ya know the "Dream Ticket" and "Vote Both". You remember last spring!

Didn't take Clinton long to meet for a strategy session with Ms. Gillibrand on Saturday at the Astoria.

Kirsten Gillibrand is nothing but a bench warmer for Clinton just in case things don't work out at the State Department.

You watch! Cuomo will crawl out of the cracks & announce his bid in Gubernatorial Primary against Paterson.

Cuomo's sling shot is "red hot", he's just killed two birds with one stone! Kennedy & Paterson.

NY politicians better watch out or we could see them all go down the tube, including Schumer.

Giuliani is 'smirking' & organizing in the background.

Well I am just disgusted with the entire debacle. There has been so much anonymous mudslinging against Caroline Kennedy that it calls into question the integrity and the judgment of all involved. I'm just glad that Caroline is out of the sandbox that NY Dem politics has devolved into.

Paterson will never be elected in 2010. He lost a huge chunk of his base as a result of this fiasco and I don't think that Kirsten Gillibrand's supporters will compensate for that...

Cuomo needs to step up or else the Repubs will take the Governor's office. He's the only one who can sell Gillibrand at this point.

I am a Caroline Kennedy fan and nothing that any anonynous political vulture says will change that.

Senator Gillibrand can sell herself. She's won reelection in Republican territory. She garnered the endorsement of NOW and the ACLU, and now that she's endorsed marriage equality, will probably get it from Human Rights Campaign. She was one of the top fundraisers in congress. And she's known as a tireless worker - she'll visit the whole state. She'll campaign intensely.

But Cuomo is probably fine with her. They did work together in HUD. I don't think there's any reason to believe there's a conflict there. If he's going to unseat anyone, he'll go after Paterson.

The smart thing for Paterson to do would have been to appoint Cuomo's father (Mario) to the Senate as an elder statesman and seat warmer, and encourage Cuomo Jr and Kennedy to prepare to earn the seat the hard way against all comers.

Paterson said he didn't want to appoint a caretaker senator -- somebody who'd be replaced in 2010 because he said that to do so would waste two years of seniority.

When Paterson announced at the introductory press conference that he picked what's her name because she was the most qualified individual for the position, I was reminded of George Bush when he introduced Clarence Thomas. Said the same thing about Clarence. Nobody believed Bush either.

Legislative experience, upstate, actual practicing attorney, one of the biggest fundraisers in congress.

With two years of incumbency to gain name recognition outside of her district, I think she'll win.

Spitzer's sexual misadventures aside, the ex-governor was becoming an embarassment for continuing Patacki policies and adding additional tax burdens on top of these. The hope was that Paterson would wind down the Patacki years and slow down the taxation. The opposite has proven true. Gillibrand comes from Long Island - home base for the D'Amato/ Patacki machine that constructed the original foundation for the 'Bushonomics' for the W. years, so it's pretty clear what this appointment is really all about.
Perhaps Paterson just spent too many years in Albany. Anyway, he has become the embarassment we came to expect from Spitzer. Cuomo's got some problems; but SOMEBODY, Democrat or Republican or Whatever, has got to reverse the Patacki rape of Upstate New York in general and New York government in general, or the Empire State will eventually become the Empty State.

As a New Yorker who paid attention to this the only people who are upset are the media and Caroline Kennedy -Scholossberg supporters. Most New Yorkers feel the Governor made the correct decision. Mrs. Kennedy was an embarrassment and she wasn't qualified to get thru an interview never mind be Senator for NYS. Andrew Cuomo will not be Governor because of the HUD fiasco and his own personal affairs, besides many New Yorkers don't like him enough. The Governor proved he's his own man and not owned by anyone, I will support Governor Paterson it seems that he has New York State best interest at heart. Had he selected Caroline Kennedy he would've been the laughed out of office.

As a fellow New Yorker, I totally agree!!! The pundits who are expressing the most outrage over this pick don't even live in NY and they're angry because Patterson didn't bow to political pressure and appoint Caroline. There's a poll out today that says most NY'ers blame Caroline for not being picked.. If she really wants the seat, she can run in 2010. Until then, the voters of NY will have a chance to examine Gillebrand's potential. Gov. Patterson did what he thought was best for OUR state, not the talking heads who are trying to score points and boost ratings.

Just so I'm clear, you think that in a time of financial crisis when literally EVERY state has its hand out that it's good that Patterson picked Gillibrand over CAROLINE KENNEDY. A woman who unlike Gillibrand would not have been just another freshman senator, and also unlike Gillibrand is a personal friend of the President and would have had Ted Kennedy (one of the greatest legislators our country has ever had) as a mentor.

Either way, whomever was to fill that seat wouldn't have been elected by the state of NY but appointed. So what's the difference?

BTW...the media was brutal to Caroline Kennedy. Not sure how you got the impression they were rooting for her.

Putting aside your personal sentiments, you may be interested in a new Sienna College poll which found that Gov. Paterson's lead has plummeted because of his handling of the Kennedy matter and his selection of Rep, Gillibrand to fill Sec. Clinton's former Senate seat.

According to the poll, Paterson's lead over Atty Gen. Andrew Cuomo has plummeted to just 2 points from 23 points last month in a hypothetical 2010 Democratic primary for governor.

Also, Paterson's lead over Rudy Giluiani (ugh) has also dropped precipitously and is now less than Cuomo's lead.

General Election
Paterson 44 (-7 vs. last month)
Giuliani 42 (+4)
Und 14 (+3)

Cuomo 48 (-2 vs. last poll, month)
Giuliani 39 (+2)
Und 13 (nc)

Moreover, Republicans are happier than Democrats with New York’s Rep. Gillibrand's selection according to a new Quinnipiac University Poll.

Paterson appears to have hurt his own chances with his handling of the Kennedy matter.

The day the Blago scandal broke, Caroline Kennedy stopped being a viable candidate, unless she could somehow sell herself to the public as being skillful and deserving.

Unfortunately for her, she was unable to do so. Every time she opened her mouth, her ratings in the polls went down.

Caroline Kennedy - father was president and assassinated; uncle ran for president and assassinated; family is a political dynasty with many trials and tribulations over the years..... Why would anyone think for a single second that she was naive about the dirty game of politics. That is pretty dumb. It was sad to see that circus play itself out the way that it did but with her heritage it is difficult to understand why she didn't have a more sophisticated, organized team of experts around her.

I hold a politician responsible for her team. Kennedy might know about the rare tragedies that beset politicians, but when it comes to managing the press and negotiating with legislators, she had not experience. I think that was clear in the failure of her rollout. She played the game and lost.
