Attorneys for former Sen. Ted Stevens (R-Alaska) have accused an FBI agent involved in the Stevens corruption investigation of having an inappropriate relationship with a key witness in the case.

Based on a complaint by an FBI whistleblower, Agent Chad Joy, the Stevens defense team claims that Mary Beth Kepner, the lead FBI agent on the case, had a personal relationship with Bill Allen, the CEO of an Alaska oil services firm and a witness against Stevens.

"It could probably be shown by facts and figures that there is no distinctly American criminal class except Congress."

Apparently "inappropriate relationship" to old Ted is defined as a sexual one. He was convicted of an "inappropriate relationship" with his contractor. Not sexual but inappropriate never the less. Typical repub definitional differences.

I love it. Ole' ted just can't get the fact that he's been convicted. Then again, neither can anyone else, as the old codger is still roaming free.

If Allen had started the relationship as a means to assist Stevens, we wouldn't have heard a peep. Since Allen really has nothing to gain by boinking an FBI agent thus relegating this issue to another typical repub obfuscation strategy, which is to find some small tiny bit of info that may or may not have to do with anything and then run with it until people think he was set up. Repub 101.

It's not impossible that an FBI agent did something out of line...

But to believe Ted, you'd have to believe that a BUSH Administration "Justice Department" ignored exculpatory evidence and allow a trial to go on that could lead a Republican senate seat being lost... No, don't think so.

Let's look at the bright side - the mere mention of Uncle Ted's stubborn attempts to deny his seven felony convictions and his desperate, laughable claims that he is the victim, stop smug pubs gloating over Blago mid sentence.

Bravo! I'm with you on that and more... I'm sick of the Republicans packaging themselves as pure as the driven snow and villifying Democrats/Liberals. We have to keep putting the reality about the Republicans and the Rightwing out there- everywhere we can.

The reason Stevens is not guilty of soliciting and accepting bribes is because an FBI agent had a "personal relationship" (whatever that means) with an oil exec. So I guess the $250,000 addition to his house for which he was not charged and did not pay is irrelevant. It was just a perk of being a senator. Evey senator is entitled to such gifts.

i really wish i could run for senator. that way i would have already paid for my mortgage, my sons colleges, extension of my house, and pay off my other bills. sigh.

It seems that the subject of possible prosecutorial misconduct is a source of hilarity if the defendant is a Republican.

Politico's article is poorly researched and written, so it is hard to follow. It refers to some memo by or about an FBI agent that supposedly has sexual innuendo, and the fact that she wore a skirt to court one day. It further alleges that she may have improperly discussed grand jury testimony and that prosecutors knowing ly put on false testimony.

Stevens deserved a fair trial. Does anyone expect that a Bush appointed US Attorney might not fudge on evidence?
