I Like ItI Don’t Like It

Chip Saltsman went on MSNBC Tuesday morning with the intention to promote his candidacy for the Republican National Committee chairmanship. Instead, he got a tongue-lashing from MSNBC Contessa Brewer for trying to blame the media for the outrage over a Christmas tape he sent out that included the song "Barack The Magic Negro."

Watch the interview:

Politico has more.

Well, now this scoundrel has been "dissed" on public TV and the world had the pleasure of watching it. You go Contessa! It couldn't have happened to a better jerk!

When rupugnicans win, what does that say about America? (rhetorical)

It is a parody by Paul Shanklin impersonating Al Sharpton and based on the Peter, Paul, and Mary hit song "Puff, the Magic Dragon". Is it any different than some of the parodies done weekly by Saturday night live? Remember all of the parodys directed against Clinton, Bush, Palin, the blind governor from NY (only to name a few)?
It is humor. As is the case with most humor, some are offended. It seems as if you laugh at this parody directed at Obama, then you are racist. Using that logic, if you laugh at any parody of our President, then you must be un-American? I don't get it.

You miss a very crucial element here, ConservativeTim. The BIG difference is that Clinton, Bush or Palin did not use any of these parodies to advance their campaigns. Saltsman did. What others do you have no control over. But what you do and sanction, especially as a campaigner, will be scrutinized and rightfully so.

Parodies from entertainers falls into a category of them showing a lack of taste on most occassions when it comes off as being offensive.

The problem is when you are a politician you are not a comedian and are expected to show some common sense and good judgement. This is especially true when you want to be an icon for a party that has a reputation of racist idelolgy like the GOP.

I'll shorten a response I made below to explain. Satire from outside of politics is fair game and necessary. But elected politicians must be held to a higher standard. Chris Rock can say in a comedy routine that he's worried Barack Obama will ruin everything for blacks by running around the white house wearing gold teeth, a big clock necklace and viking horns, but Chip Saltsman can't. People of reason understand that implicitly. Elected politicians must at least appear to represent us all, not just some.

ConservativeTim, I'm going to try to help you in figuring this out. First of all, SNL, The Daily Show, heck...even that awful 1/2 Hour News are comedy shows. You do not sit and watch SNL hoping that Weekend Update gives you some serious news for a change. Sometimes their parodies go over the line but most of the time they are funny (except for the 1/2 Hour News which was never funny).

This man is not a comedian but someone who is trying to get elected to represent a political party. A party that supposedly wants to be inclusive. This was offensive to many people but what is more offensive is people like you trying to justify this man's actions. You, the Republicans, have a choice to make about your future. Are you going to keep the same old "look" which is basically white (see any day during the Republican convention and compared it to the Democratic convention) or are you going to split. The way you are going I think you are probably going to split with those Republicans who are smart choosing to pursue their economic conservative ideals without looking at race or the majority right now who want to hold on to the past. Face it Tim...if you keep going the way you are going the Democrats will be in power for a long, long time which is a good thing in my opinion.

Place in context. This did not come from a comedian. I personally thought the joke about Black people in public housing was quite funny due to the irony behind it. If Joe Biden had sent it out as part of a message to the Democratic rank and file, it would have been offensive.

I am proud of Contessa for calling him on it, if a man told him it wasn't funny I am sure he wouldn't give a hoot, but when a young and pretty woman calls him on it, you could almost see him blush!

Chip Saltsman didn't even apologize. It's outrageous and offensive. The title of the song is offensive. He has no judgment. If the Republicans elect that, they deserve whatever results they get.

This man is a perfect example of why the Republican Party should not even be leaders of a junk yard clean up brigade.

He represents everything that is so so wrong with so-called VALUES Republicans.

His VALUES are repulsive. He disgusts me.

I like it when the media confronts people like this as much as when shows like 60 Miinutes used to confront crooked businessmen etc.

It is their place to expose this type behavior.

The point was not to tell him he is an idiot. It is to force people to stop deflecting when they make a mistake or get caught showing why they should not be allowed to be our leaders.

Let me get this straight, you send out a CHRISTMAS message that is clearly racist and then get huffy when the news suggests that you're racist. And this makes people want to follow your 'leadership' how?

What makes this even MORE disgusting...if that's possible.... is this was a CHRISTMAS MESSAGE!

A CHRISTMAS MESSAGE!

I'd like to know how all you Republican "Christ"ians feel about such a message? Perhaps this sick man would like the chance to personally sing this song to Jesus on Judgement Day.
