Study: Coffee Can Lower Risk Of Dementia

First Posted: 2/27/09 Updated: 11/17/11

Coffee

Drinking coffee may do more than just keep you awake. A new study suggests an intriguing potential link to mental health later in life, as well.

A team of Swedish and Danish researchers tracked coffee consumption in a group of 1,409 middle-age men and women for an average of 21 years. During that time, 61 participants developed dementia, 48 with Alzheimer's disease.

After controlling for numerous socioeconomic and health factors, including high cholesterol and high blood pressure, the scientists found that the subjects who had reported drinking three to five cups of coffee daily were 65 percent less likely to have developed dementia, compared with those who drank two cups or less. People who drank more than five cups a day also were at reduced risk of dementia, the researchers said, but there were not enough people in this group to draw statistically significant conclusions.

Studies also report tea drinking can prevent dementia, Alzheimers, and Parkinson's. Tea may also improve memory.

I stopped drinking coffee because it bothered my stomach all the time. It can really do a number on your stomach. I can't imagine drinking 3-5 cups per day. I switched to tea.

Must be those beans, ENK. Last week coffee ("just 2 cups a day") causes hallucinations, then the competition goes into action (corporate America) and proves coffee protects our synapses, and dendrites. What will they dream up next? Oh, I know, a pill that will do the same thing as 3-5 cups of coffee per day.

I bet if we chew the beans, stand on our heads and spit against the wind, they'll help us, too.

Where is that group in the study, now? Hmmmm? I'd like to know.

Your skepticism might be misplaced. A study takes a lot longer than one week to complete and anything published in an academic journal has to go through a peer review process; it takes a while before it is approved for publication. In addition, many studies are actually financed by the CDC or other health organizations that want to find out the relation between the environment and a disease. For example, a study might look at the relation between what vessels are used to cook food (e.g. glass, aluminum, stainless steel, etc.) and creutzfeldt jakob disease. Studies can reach even apparently conflicting results because they are designed differently and take different factors into account.

And.... wanna take a guess who funded this research? Not tea importers. Studies like this are pointless without knowing who paid for it.
