The Hill:

New York lawmakers are so far unwilling to throw their support behind newly crowned Sen. Kirsten Gillibrand (D), and several say they could support a potential primary challenge from Rep. Carolyn McCarthy (D).

Democrats in the state's 26-member House delegation made it clear this week that Gillibrand has something to prove to them -- specifically on whether she's going to stick to conservative positions on issues like guns, illegal immigration and economic issues -- or take a more Democratic-held position.

I think she could be voted out at the primary level once New Yorkers learn more about her.

I don't think that either one of them will survive the 2010 primaries but that won't prevent Tracy Flick from treating New Yorkers to several rounds of Mitt Romney-like poltical transformations. Tortured contortions on issues will abound and will be exploited by her primary opponents.

Personally I think the governor made a mistake with this appointment. I hope I am wrong.

She won't be the democratic candidate for the senate when we vote in Nov. 2010. She'll be out of work.

'New York Reps ... May Back McCarthy'

Jenny McCarthy is so 'smokin' hot', no?

This is the sort of super star NY needs!

I'm wondering if a Joe Lieberman kind of thing will happen. The republicans will vote her in.

In this state you can only vote in the primary for the party you are registered in. So that won't happen.

I hope Kristen understands that she won't be our senator long, and uses this chance to steal as much as she is, as a senator, entitled to.
11:42 AM on 01/29/2009
Part (most, actually) of the problem in CT when Lieberman was not
re-nominated but then was re-elected, was that *only* party members
could vote in their primary. Since so few people voted, a tiny bunch of
true believers was able to swing the vote 'their way', for the primary.

Kirsten Gillibrand's mission for the next year or so must be to show
that she can learn the job of being senator, and then to do the job
well. That's the opportunity she's been given. In the mean time,
expect further moaning & complaining from those who weren't
so lucky.

If NY history is any guide, there'll be several contenders, even after primaries. NY has 3
or 4 or 5 significant political parties, depending on how you define significant. Enough
for a chaotic election anyway. More complicated than CT also.

(It wasn't the CP Repos that elected Lieberman, as there aren't enough of them.
It was all those 'Independent Democrats'.)

Anyone who drags Al D'Amato out front & center stage isn't smart! He's the Lobbyist who worked on John McCain's Presidential Campaign. Does really make one wonder if she is a Democrat? Al D'Amato? NRA 100% endorsement? Immigration stance? NY? That's awfully strange to me.
08:55 AM on 01/29/2009
D'Amato is much more than just a lobbyist who worked on McCain's Presidential Campaign.

http://www.west.net/~westcott/DAmato.html provides a picture of D'Amato as NY Senator.

Trading, Hud and Abscam were par for the course for Senator Pothole. Guess who worked for D'Amato for a little while? Ms. Gillibrand. Judging by the fact that the NY State Police leaked a 911 call made by her opponent's wife to the press a week before her first election win, I'd say she has no problem following in D'Amato's footsteps.

Once Gillibrand decided she wanted Hillary's Senate seat it was a done deal.

Call it sentiment instead. She interned for him, early on.

NYT - January 24, 2009
D’Amato Takes (Near) Center Stage at Gillibrand Announcement

Forgotten but not gone, Alfonse M. D’Amato performed a Herculean feat in a photo-op Friday in Albany: as a lone Republican, he upstaged his Senate successor, Charles E. Schumer, at a Democratic love fest. ...

During college, Ms. Gillibrand was a summer intern in Mr. D’Amato’s Albany office. Her father, Douglas P. Rutnik, is a politically connected Albany lawyer who is close to Mr. D’Amato and to former members of the Pataki administration. ...

I think she could lose this seat for the Democrats, which is unthinkable in NY. I am not real happy with Patterson or her and will financially support their competitors when they run against them. If Cuomo runs for Governor, I will volunteer.

I am just waiting to see how she votes on the Obama Stimulus bill to solidify my vote for the 2010 elections ...

If she votes AGAINST it, I don't care if she turns gay or throws out ALL her guns before the next elections, she will STILL NOT get my vote ...

If she votes for it like most of the other Democrats then I will know she is willing to mold her policy stances to represent a majority of the NY population ...

The funny thing is I really do NOT care for the HUGE stimulus package BUT this woman has proven over the years that she is more of a Repub than a Dem ...

and I have yet to see a Repub I agree with ...
10:03 PM on 01/28/2009
Don't get yer knickers in a bunch, she and the guv are seat warmers.
09:50 PM on 01/28/2009
Let's give her a chance. She was, after all, elected to the House of Reps. to represent a district, and that she did! It's a conservative district, where gun ownership is important and illegal immigrants pose a threat in an agricultural economy. If she can listen to her new constituency, which includes cities threatened by gun violence, with different views on immigration, as well, I'd be willing to back her in an election.
I think that we often forget that our representatives are elected to represent the views of the majority of their constituents...not their own views. Let's see if Sen. Gillibrand can do this.
10:04 PM on 01/28/2009
Sorry. Someone who stands for nothing will fall for anything. She has no convictions, except she seems to hate immigrants and gays, and would probably be happy to shoot them with her many guns.
01:46 AM on 01/29/2009
Yeah, and maybe there will be a democrat to run for that district will be more liberal, and we will lose the seat to a republican, good thinking!!!!
08:47 PM on 01/28/2009
Let's wait for Ms NY Know It All glorialovelace to post her t rolling d ittohead talking points on how Gillibrand is the BEST Senator because she comes from Republican upstate and NY needs a Repub in Dem clothes to win the whole state in a Senate race...
10:19 PM on 01/28/2009
Don't worry, she'll be here soon going all Harriet Christian. PUMAs have nothing else to live for.
10:59 PM on 01/28/2009
I don't have time to debate something that might or might not happen two years from now. It's not surprising that those who were NOT appointed are making bellicose noises. What else is new?

For now, I'll leave the matter to you two merchant bankers to play with.

This Paterson/Gillebrand/Kennedy business is no longer a story.

Reason? Wasn't she crowned by H. C?
