Salma Hayek Hosts Oscar Nod Celebration For Penelope Cruz

It was couples' night at Salma Hayek and Harvey Weinstein's haute Hollywood Hills bash Monday evening, as A-Listers came out to honor Penelope Cruz after her Oscar nomination for "Vicky Cristina Barcelona."

Turning up at the party, held at Hayek's stunning home, were "Vicky" co-star Scarlett Johansson and hubby Ryan Reynolds, Ashton Kutcher and wife Demi Moore, Michael Douglas and Catherine Zeta-Jones, Antonio Banderas and wife Melanie Griffith, Charlize Theron and partner Stuart Townsend, and Angela Bassett and hubby Courtney B. Vance...

The theme for the evening was inspired by the "Vicky" flick. Hayek's house was decked out as a photographer's darkroom/studio, with pictures of Cruz strung from wires across the walls.

It bothers me a little that Salma and Penelope are just regarded as hotties in the US--as evident by their simple roles in American pictures, and by the comments on this thread, too. I mean, yes, they are incredibly beautiful, but they're amazing, complex actresses, too. Especially Cruz. Her work with Almodovar has been spectacular. And she was the first Spanish actress to ever be nominated for Best Actress by the Academy Awards. I love these two.

Be honest a majority of how these two sell themselves in Hollywood is based on their sexual appeal. Im not one who ever sees acting as some grand noble profession. Im sure the cosmetics companies that that use these two to promote their products are less concerned about their acting skills than their appearance.
