I Like ItI Don’t Like It

NBC has given a pilot order to "Parenthood," a dramedy a based on Ron Howard's 1989 feature starring Steve Martin and Dianne Wiest that centered on a Midwestern family.

"Friday Night Lights" creator/exec producer Jason Katims wrote the adaptation, produced by Universal Media Studios and Howard and Brian Grazer's Imagine TV. (The feature, which earned two Oscar nominations for co-star Wiest and Randy Newman's song "I Love to See You Smile," was produced by Imagine and Universal Pictures.)

Katims, Howard and Grazer are exec producing the pilot.

It is writing and casting that makes a show great, not the premise. Friday Night Lights is a wonderful show, and it bodes well for this production.

The movie was cute. Here's hoping the show is, too. However, to do a show about parenthood today will be fairly depressing. Out of work parents aren't funny.

Who writes these headlines? How about some subject-verb agreement?

Do a show based on L.A. STORY instead. "It's SEINFELD as done by David E. Kelley!"

Next to "Working Girl" and "Uncle Buck", "Parenthood" was one of the best TV adaptations of the 1990 season.

Now where's "Hull High"?

NBC is so LOST. First they pass up on the greatest show ever, and then they keep making remakes of shows that weren't even top shows in their respective time periods.

Remember 10 years ago when they could do no wrong with their Thursday lineup? My how the mighty fall...

Great idea! It failed once. Let's try it again! Don't these idiots get it? The reason the movie was a success is that it had a GREAT cast and a very cute, clever script. Why is Katims wasting his time with this drivel?

You mean the short run series from 1990 with Ed Begley and Leonardi DeCaprio will no longer be the worst sitcom based on PARENTHOOD? Thank God. Joss Whedon can put it back on his resume again.

see, this is why i have a bit of a problem with hollywood.
no new ideas/concepts. just the same retreading of bygone productions.
what's next? an updated sanford and son? maybe a new all in the family?
would all directors, producers, and writers please exercise some brain cells and create new things for the viewing public?
it's not that hard to do.

Your point is taken, but it's funny that the specific two old series you refer to were ALREADY Hollywood retreads when they first hit the airwaves in America. "Sanford and Son" was based on a show called "Steptoe and Son," and "All in the Family" was based on a show called "Til Death do us Part." Both British.

Still happening today. That snappy new "Life on Mars" on ABC? Also based on a recent BBC series of the same name. (And "The Office," of course!)

Yes, the retread syndrome is getting worse these days, but it has been around for a long time. It's just funny to me that the two you mentioned specifically were ALREADY retreads, or was that your point in the first place?

That said, the "Parenthood" remake is a horrible, anachronistic dud of an idea.
