HOUSTON — Exxon Mobil Corp. on Friday reported a profit of $45.2 billion for 2008, breaking its own record for a U.S. company, even as its fourth-quarter earnings fell 33 percent from a year ago.

The previous record for annual profit was $40.6 billion, which the world's largest publicly traded oil company set in 2007.

The extraordinary full-year profit wasn't a surprise given crude's triple-digit price for much of 2008, peaking near an unheard of $150 a barrel in July. Since then, however, prices have fallen roughly 70 percent amid a deepening global economic crisis.

In the fourth quarter alone crude tumbled 60 percent, prompting spending and job cuts in an industry that was reporting robust, often record, profits as recently as last summer.

With piles of cash and diversified operations, the majors like Exxon Mobil have fared better than many smaller oil and gas companies, but Friday's results show no one is completely insulated from the ongoing malaise.

Irving, Texas-based Exxon said net income slid sharply to $7.8 billion, or $1.55 a share, in the October-December period. That compared with $11.7 billion, or $2.13 a share, in the same period a year ago, when Exxon set a U.S. record for quarterly profit. It has since topped that mark twice, first in last year's second quarter and then with earnings of $14.83 billion in the third quarter.

Revenue in the most-recent quarter fell 27 percent to $84.7 billion.

Both the per-share and revenue results topped Wall Street forecasts. On average, analysts expected the company to earn $1.45 a share in the latest quarter on revenue of $69.1 billion, according to Thomson Reuters.

Shares rose $1.52, or 2 percent, to $78.52 in early trading.

The nation's second largest oil company, Chevron Corp., reported profits of $4.9 billion for the fourth quarter, though revenues slid 26 percent with oil prices in sharp decline.

It earned $2.44 per share in the three months ended Dec. 31. Like Exxon, Chevron easily beat expectations of analysts, who were looking for profits of $1.81 per share.

The industry went into retrenchment toward the end of the year with demand falling.

As expected, Exxon Mobil's bottom line took a beating from its exploration and production, or upstream, arm, where net income fell 31 percent to $5.6 billion. The culprit: lower crude prices, which the company said decreased earnings by $3.2 billion in the fourth quarter alone.

The company, which produces about 3 percent of the world's oil, said overall output fell 3 percent in the most-recent period, a troubling trend in previous quarters. Exxon, which generates more than two-thirds of its earnings from oil and gas production, said production-sharing contracts and OPEC quotas contributed to its lower output.

Results were better at its refining and marketing unit, where earnings rose 6 percent to $2.4 billion as higher margins overcame costs related to last summer's hurricanes and other factors.

The company's chemical division also took a hit, posting net income of $155 million versus $1.1 billion a year ago. Results were hurt by lower volumes and margins and hurricane-repair costs.

Exxon Mobil said it bought 119 million shares of its common stock in the quarter at a cost of $8.8 billion. Roughly $8 billion of that amount was dedicated to reducing the number of shares outstanding; the balance was used to offset shares issued as part of the company's benefit plans.

Exxon said it spent $26.1 billion on capital and exploration projects last year, up 25 percent from 2007. Its earnings release provided no information about its planned spending for 2009.

For the full year, Exxon Mobil's massive profit amounted to $8.69 a share, versus $7.28 a share a year ago.

Honestly the profits these companies make are not just from retail sales at the pump, they are from manufacturers buying, and making products that use oil solvents. You know that window cleaner, that floor finish, that plastic bag, those parts for your cars, those sunglasses you sport, the little plastic paper clip holder on your desk. it's more than just gasoline in your car. They make a huge profit in their refineries, not as much as you think at the pump.

Mission accomplished. The Cheney Bush cabal lined the pockets of their cronies. This makes the Lufthansa job made famous in the movie "Goodfellas" look like a bodega heist.

America needs justice. This is not a choice. It is the DUTY of our elected officials to enforce the law.

I don't believe for a second that these ginormous bonuses are necessary to retain talented people. I am absolutely sure that for a salary of, say, $1 million a year (small by this industry's standards) they would be able to find plenty of hard working people who could do the job just fine.

Can you please post a list of employees at Exxon who make $1 million a year and above?

Thanks.

This is no longer an issue of pointing the finger at Exxon and crying "shame."
It's now an issue of America's willingness to continue to take it in the backside while complaining.

If you really have a problem with the profits these greedy, motherf*ckers are making, then either stop driving your vehicles (here come more complaints and justifications) or shut up and do something about it (and, here come even more complaints) otherwise, hop in your car and go shopping.

What would you suggest Annie? Should we all buy Glocks and March into the Houston Hq of Exxon, spraying the windows for dramatic effect? OR should we write Whitehouse.Gov, because we still have a representational form of government in this Farsical Republic and we must make the wheel squeek?

It would take $30 billion to feed the word, but Exxon makes over $40 billion in profits for one year. Natioinalize the basta*ds and distribute the profits to us. We have been paying for years.

How do you feed the world on $30 billion a year? $30 billion/6 billion people is $5 per person. Now, one can feed a person for maybe 50 cents a day, so that's ten day's worth of meager rations. What are we going to do on day 11?

There's nothing wrong with reaping the rewards of HARD WORK.

Hard work is not even in the vocabulary of average Americans these days. They feel ENTITLED to everything. Obama, give me this, give me that, tax oil companies, give me a housing bailout. Degenerate nation of blood sucking whiners.

While I agree that this nation needs to get off it's high horse and figure out what it is like to really work for a living, I think Exxon Mobil is not a company that I feel sorry for. They have been raking n record profits for quite a while now. Yeah they work hard to rake in the money but when it comes to cleaning up and oil spill or figuring out how to be more efficient and clean they suck.

If anything I think this bit of news is a good reason for us Americans to get off our ass and innovate some new and different forms of energy.

You must be on the Exxon board. A lot of hard working Americans have not benefited, and in fact have fallen behind. They don't feel entitled to anything but a fair shake. If they don't get it, we'll have, if we don't already, a demoralized work force. Let's see how far we get with that. Have your whips ready.

The ones asking for help are not people like me. I work 2 jobs, and I am not alone there, there are several people with educations, and okay salaries working hard right along side me, at job # 2. It's not because we live beyond our means, it's because one big medical bill can wipe you out., and the prices on everything are going up faster than our wages. We are not asking for bailout money, and then giving ourselves bonuses.

I don't feel sorry one bit for Exxon, they made a huge profit, and then don't look for new technologies. Ooops, we had an oil spill !!

Can someone explain why my Exxon stock, which I inherited, has lost value and the dividends paid have not increased, but this company is making record profits - more than any other company in history? Am I naive or should this profit be reflected in both stock shares and dividends. Who is getting the profits?

The stock price is a reflection of future earnings, not past earnings.
The PE ratio has fallen for all stocks so a falling PE ratio means the stock price is falling.

exactomundo !! And the bigger a company gets, the harder it is to pump up the EPS (the holy grail in market).

Think GE, think Pfizer, Think Exxon. Even if they increase profits by a little, its hard to change the EPS by that much. unless they buy back stock (one way to boost eps).

Its the Oooga-Booga of the Oil-ees accountants. Their bureaucracy is so big that its like trying to decipher the Gov.
If we demand a return on their excess profits, they will, (without our scrutiny, legal action and regulation) simply move it to some other area of legitimate expense, or so it seems.
Attend the annual Stockholders Meeting, prepare for and demand an item on the agenda, call for an audit and demand a
vote for the same. They will smile with that Texas Mobile Alabama drawl sayin: "Why, a course y'all have every right and may we say we share y'alls concern".

so far today, XOM down .6%...man the shareholders are trying to get blood out of stone...they are not happy with 7 billion profits for 4th quarter when oil is below 50$/barrell...

and banks announce they are going to be losing less than advertised...(billions less) and they jump 10%...

ridiculousness of high expectations !!

When will people start pointing the finger at them as being a big catalyst of the economic breakdown. People who might have been able to make their mortgages were not as the cost of gas and everything went up fast and drastically. I can now fill up my car for less than a third of what I was paying before and it affected everything down the line. These b@stards should be called out.
