HOUSTON — Exxon Mobil Corp. on Friday reported a profit of $45.2 billion for 2008, breaking its own record for a U.S. company, even as its fourth-quarter earnings fell 33 percent from a year ago.

The previous record for annual profit was $40.6 billion, which the world's largest publicly traded oil company set in 2007.

The extraordinary full-year profit wasn't a surprise given crude's triple-digit price for much of 2008, peaking near an unheard of $150 a barrel in July. Since then, however, prices have fallen roughly 70 percent amid a deepening global economic crisis.

In the fourth quarter alone crude tumbled 60 percent, prompting spending and job cuts in an industry that was reporting robust, often record, profits as recently as last summer.

With piles of cash and diversified operations, the majors like Exxon Mobil have fared better than many smaller oil and gas companies, but Friday's results show no one is completely insulated from the ongoing malaise.

Irving, Texas-based Exxon said net income slid sharply to $7.8 billion, or $1.55 a share, in the October-December period. That compared with $11.7 billion, or $2.13 a share, in the same period a year ago, when Exxon set a U.S. record for quarterly profit. It has since topped that mark twice, first in last year's second quarter and then with earnings of $14.83 billion in the third quarter.

Revenue in the most-recent quarter fell 27 percent to $84.7 billion.

Both the per-share and revenue results topped Wall Street forecasts. On average, analysts expected the company to earn $1.45 a share in the latest quarter on revenue of $69.1 billion, according to Thomson Reuters.

Shares rose $1.52, or 2 percent, to $78.52 in early trading.

The nation's second largest oil company, Chevron Corp., reported profits of $4.9 billion for the fourth quarter, though revenues slid 26 percent with oil prices in sharp decline.

It earned $2.44 per share in the three months ended Dec. 31. Like Exxon, Chevron easily beat expectations of analysts, who were looking for profits of $1.81 per share.

The industry went into retrenchment toward the end of the year with demand falling.

As expected, Exxon Mobil's bottom line took a beating from its exploration and production, or upstream, arm, where net income fell 31 percent to $5.6 billion. The culprit: lower crude prices, which the company said decreased earnings by $3.2 billion in the fourth quarter alone.

The company, which produces about 3 percent of the world's oil, said overall output fell 3 percent in the most-recent period, a troubling trend in previous quarters. Exxon, which generates more than two-thirds of its earnings from oil and gas production, said production-sharing contracts and OPEC quotas contributed to its lower output.

Results were better at its refining and marketing unit, where earnings rose 6 percent to $2.4 billion as higher margins overcame costs related to last summer's hurricanes and other factors.

The company's chemical division also took a hit, posting net income of $155 million versus $1.1 billion a year ago. Results were hurt by lower volumes and margins and hurricane-repair costs.

Exxon Mobil said it bought 119 million shares of its common stock in the quarter at a cost of $8.8 billion. Roughly $8 billion of that amount was dedicated to reducing the number of shares outstanding; the balance was used to offset shares issued as part of the company's benefit plans.

Exxon said it spent $26.1 billion on capital and exploration projects last year, up 25 percent from 2007. Its earnings release provided no information about its planned spending for 2009.

For the full year, Exxon Mobil's massive profit amounted to $8.69 a share, versus $7.28 a share a year ago.

I'm not mad that they are making profits. I'm mad that my tax dollars subsidized those profits.

If you charge 4 Billion to at least 150 Top Fortune 500 Corporations and use the funds to create jobs, pay their salaries for a few years until the companies get on their feet... problem solved! People could go back to spending supply and demand would be balanced!

A one time only tax won't kill em...especially if their license to practice here in America would not be revoked! They would stand to lose more if they had to close up shop!

How about stop wasting money on propping up auto, airlines, banks....instead use that money to invest in our nation !!

This is where 30% of our Money went so lets put a 20% Excessive Profits Tax on them to help in the Bailout!

Remember when Gas was over $4 in California ($6 in Canada) in June and then Congress began an investigation and in one Month crude dropped 24% and the 80%. These "games" must be stopped, so stabilize the price of gas using a variable tax on Crude.

Yeah, profits on the blood of third world countries and the destruction of those people's way of life; especially, their environment and modes of sustenance. I'm sure these oil company executives would be glad to discuss what the oil companies are doing in Myanmar (sp?) (Burma) and Ogoniland in Nigeria.

Not to mention that the ills of a lot of the world are directly due to US.

I just want everyone to know that the average fortune 100 CEO makes $8,461.00 per hour! If everyone knew that, I think there would be more outrage. I think that's straight salary. With bonuses on top of that, and stock options, and various perks. Nice to know since they hire the people who do the actual work for the least amount possible. In other words, if one of those CEOs goes to work on Jan. 1, and leaves at lunch, they've already made more than most of their employees make all year. Get pissed!

Oil really needs to be nationalized. Nothing could be more obvious.
Until the day this happens you know you are living in a self-serving plutocracy.

Favorite    Flag as abusive Posted 01:35 PM on 01/30/2009

So you want to live in Venezuela or Iran or Saudi Arabia? All those countries have nationalized oil and I think I'd rather be here than there. Everything in life comes with trade offs. I'd rather have the somewhat free-market economy and the right to speak my mind in the US than nationalized oil, price controls and "thought" police.

In fairness to both of you, yes and no. Of course, I would add the bicycle to the list, as well as lend understanding to the various reasons why one of those options might not be possible.

Only we can level with ourselves regarding the feasability of how we get our energy. If one can say to oneself that he is doing all he can, then there is no need to answer to anyone else.

An important thing to remember, though, is that the less we give to those we would rather not have so much influence over our lives, the sooner things will change for all of us, including those enslaved to them.

Favorite    Flag as abusive Posted 01:35 PM on 01/30/2009

No, it is not that simple. But not every problem has a simple solution. Energy independence will require more than bashing Exxon and more than a few people riding bikes.

One giant step in the right direction would be high gas taxes. The next step would be changes in building codes. Density and quality of new construction need to be raised. Inner cities need to be populated by something else than banks and insurance company towers.

We need to rethink transportation. Waterways and rail need to be prioritized, again.

You name it, we know how to do it. We just decided not to.

In my case, yes, yes, and yes.

It's not that no one wants oil companies to succeed. It's just that it's mighty suspicious that Exxon breaks records while nearly every company in every industry is failing. What's going on here?

Favorite    Flag as abusive Posted 01:29 PM on 01/30/2009

its because our govts. keep propping up failing and loser companies like a lot of auto and airline and bank companies. we should have let Darwin take care of those.

think what will happen if the teacher keeps giving A grade to the goofing off and cheating students and D grade to good students..thats what govt. is setting examples for

Anybody who doesn't see the timing in all this is a fool.

Politician is from an oil dynasty and is friends/partners with Saudi Oil ROYALTY.
Becomes President. (under vary questionable circumstances)
Saudis trained by a member of the Saudi Royalty crashs planes into US buildings.
Said politician uses this and lies and mis-directs US public to start a war with a dictator who had just coincidentally decided to stop using US currency for oil transactions AND insulted politicians father, but he had nothing to do with attack.
1 million inncocent people are murdered.
Economy goes in the toilet because of the war, mysteriously high oil prices and corporate de-regulation.
Property value crashs due to a false bubble fueled by de-regulation.
(All sponsored by this politician,)

Yet oil companies are still making huge profits, and the Saudi responsible for it all is still free.

It is all rather neat and tidy isn't it?

Have a great day!

Actually, it's just the first item I have some doubts about. I don't know how true it is, but I've seen a document (reproduction online, so take that for what it's worth) that seems to imply that great grandpa Bush made the family money by selling steel to Germany during WWII. So, oil dynasty? Not so much... LOL

Favorite    Flag as abusive Posted 02:44 PM on 01/30/2009

drymartini, you have obviously been drinking too many today to ask such a stupid question. The oil prices were overinflated and profits bloated because of the corporate greed and the Bush policies put into place. Find the minutes to the Bush Cheney meeting with the oil execs back in 2001. All of this is tied to the disastrous policies of the past 8 years- from the bungled war to the strangled economy. That the oil companies reported record profits once again is totally obscene. Also, the overinflated oil prices helped the economic slide because the high priced affected the prices of consumer goods and services.

This is simple Econ 101

Favorite    Flag as abusive Posted 01:12 PM on 01/30/2009

Exxon (and Chevron, BP, Shell) control less than 10% of oil reserves in the world. How can they set the price of crude ? Business 101.

OPEC countries set the tone for price of oil. These companies play by their rules. the OPEC is a cartel. cant blame exxon for that !!

Problem is, smaller companies buy from Exxon so you probably wind up buying from them in the end anyway, through the third party. They have their racket quite well figured out. I think there should be a BIG windfall profits tax slapped on them as well as some sort of additional recovery effort and antitrust legal action.

Ahhh, I guess making money is illegal or wrong now?...........

Seeing how Exxon is one of the oldest companies in history and world's larget company by revenue, what exactly did you expect? One thing we do know is, they sure pay enough taxes to keep paying for stimulus packages.

Are you that clueless?

And YES, if someone has an unfair monopoly or corrupt advantage in the market place it should be illegal and usually is. But when you have that much money, you can manipulate the regulations or have your politician friends eliminate them all together.

When will you wake up to the basic truth that when someone gains too much power they will take advantage of it, until eventually no one has even a fighting chance to compete and that that is fundamentally un-American?

Remember why America was started? To fight tyrany, not kiss up and wait for a few crumbs to fall of their plates. Grow a spine.

They get a cut because they made an agreement with the oil co. They allow them to drill in the state in exchange for a % of the profits. Perhaps you should lobby your state to allow such drilling and you can share in the wealth also.
