I Like ItI Don’t Like It

Jane Velez-Mitchell, the HLN host who replaced Glenn Beck when he jumped ship for Fox News, is already topping Beck's ratings from when he held the time slot.

In its third full month on the air, "Issues with Jane Velez-Mitchell" posted HLN's largest 7PM audience since it launched its primetime block in February 2005. For January 2009, "Issues" averaged 531,000 total viewers and 221,000 Adults 25-54, a 50% increase in total viewers and a 46% increase in the demo over Beck's January 2008 ratings.

Velez-Mitchell's January ratings also represent an 8% increase in total viewers and a 19% increase in the demo over Beck's last (and best) month on HLN. Beck's last full month on the air there was September 2008, when he averaged 492,000 total viewers and 185,000 in the demo. Velez-Mitchell took over the time slot on October 17.

Granted, Beck is drawing more eyeballs at Fox News, where he debuted earlier this month to 2.4 million total viewers and 467,000 in the demo. But Velez-Mitchell's success quiets any critics wondering whether HLN could recover after losing the popular conservative host to Fox News.

The success at 7PM is part of HLN's ongoing rebranding strategy as it sets out to redefine itself as HLN: News & Views. In January 2009, HLN was cable news' fastest growing network, growing its primetime audience by 54% in total viewers (680,000 vs. 442,000) and by 63% in the demo (280,000 vs. 172,000) over a year ago.

The success was fueled in part by Nancy Grace's ratings rise. Grace beat Keith Olbermann in the demo at 8PM for the second straight month, averaging 487,000 vs. Olbermann's 483,000, and also topped "Countdown" in the demo for the 10PM repeat. MSNBC recently announced plans to develop a new show at 10PM.

These facts and rating statistics are so obsolete when compared to Glenn Beck's new ratings at Fox News. CNN did everything they could to suppress Glenn Beck while h was there, that he was destined to fail.

His new Fox News ratings are blowing EVERYONE away in that time-slot for Cable news, and he is #3 overall in the ratings, with numbers that only continue to increase. Also, his #3 rank is only behind twp other Fox News shows, Hannity and O'Reilly.

Let's be real here, Jane Velez-Mitchell's ratings in comparison to Glenn Beck's are little league. Glenn Beck is playing for the pros.

I'm not even sure how this made a story and is considered news.

BREAKING NEWS: Jane Velez-Mitchell beats Glenn Beck's ratings at CNN... but Glenn's ratings at Fox News quadruple that of Jane Velez-Mitchell. Please... is this all you have?

Since Jane Velez Mitchell has been on CNN, her behavior seems to be of incongruity, changing her mind on the issues she is trying to cover. She waffles a bit depending on which guest expert she is talking to. Maybe it's her way of looking open minded, but instead it's a bit confusing. I think she wants to be Nancy Grace and adds a high-school level "mean-girl" lynching in her TV personality. She has a long way to go to be like Nancy Grace. I do watch Nancy and although I do not put her up on any pedestal either. But I can tell that Nancy is better educated than Jane.

Jane is a sensationalist she offers less important points to her listeners than her visiting experts, (doctors, psychologists, attorneys, etc.) for propping up her show. Her show is perpetuated on the mishaps of others which will never run out. I hope in the long run she actually can help some of the people she is such a expert on.

On a softer side, I hope she can raise proper awareness to the people who can help the victims she discusses. It would be nice if she could do it without sensationalizing. Maybe she hasn't found her voice yet.

Jane Velez is a dip-wad; can't stand watching her. She was a local news anchor here in L.A. for a long time; can't believe she has her own show. Real loser. She doesn't even know what she's talking about. She just rambles on and on. Can't believe anyone on this blog finds her fascinating at all. Have to admit anyone would be better then Glenn Beck, who is a hemorrhoid. Yeah, anyone would get better ratings than him. So, people, listen to what Jane actually says on her show........she yaks and yaks. Remember the car chase and when she was talking about Malibu? Unreal.

Nancy Grace is beating Keith in the ratings because Keith has a full podcast of his show. Take those numbers into account and we'll see how Nancy fares.

Maybe KO would get some ratings back if he "spoke truth to power" instead of placing lips to tuchus

I cannot watch Nancy Grace. She is a sanctimonious, know it all. As a trained lawyer she makes conclusions based upon her feeling and not the facts. Grace claims to know the facts even if she has no information as to the real facts. A true prosecutor follows the facts when looking for the truth. Grace cuts off those who disagree who have far more knowledge than she does.
She has still never apologized for her stalwart conclusions the Duke Lacrosse players were completely exonerated. It is not in her to apologize. She is the scariest type of prosecutor
Glen Beck is just a tool.

Like Glenn Beck, Jane Velez-Mitchell is a recovering dipsomaniac. Unlike Glenn Beck, she does cross the line from intellectual provocation into interceine maliciousness. She makes her case forcefully and honestly, but with an open mind.

I saw that quality in her when she subbed in occasionally for Larry King on his CNN interview show. She can be a relentless inquisitor and will call on you when you try to be evasive. She was more of a better fit with Nancy Grace.

Glenn Beck's sanctimoniousness makes me want to vomit in my mouth. I'm so glad he left HLN and went to Fox where I don't have to see his pudgy, self-righteous little face anymore.

What is HLN?

An acronym for Headline News Network. It's a CNN affiliate.

I think it's testament how much people crave tabloid journalism and sensational crime cases that involve pretty women, sex, murder or a missing child.

How can an addled brained twit beat KO? I'm so confused or maybe it's the majority of viewers.

Favorite is Rachel. Too bad MSNBC isn't widley available and 24/7 news, because she would be the biggest star in news.

That's the problem. MSNBC is not offered on Verizon Fios in NJ, or maybe anywhere, as far as I know. We ALL also are aware (at least those of us with a brain) that Keith is by far SUPERIOR, but then he is not a sensationalist like Nancy Grace, and many people like to watch sensationalist news stories about poor little girls who were murdered by their mothers!

Cannot watch Nancy Grace due to her many TV commericals. They simply drive me up the wall.
Keith Olberman is the BEST on TV!

MSNBC would be doing better in my household if it weren't so preoccupied with prison life and pedophiles.

Good point. How can you compete, when they have no news on the weekends. I have even looked at Faux just to get a hint what is going on on the weekends. Their scheduling makes me wonder on their programming ideas.

I have to agree with you on this one. I love Keith and Rachel but it's hard to take MSNBC really seriously when they have so much of this crap (prison life and pedophiles) on the air.
