Liz Cheney's College Thesis: 'What It Says About The Bush Presidency'

Liz Cheney

Slate :

When I worked at the library at Colorado College, I quickly discovered the job had few perks. The free book loans on demand were little better than subprime mortgages when you realized anyone could get them. The only "exclusive" benefit was the chance to keep manuscripts the library threw out. Usually, I had a limited selection of titles, like Proceedings From the Third Workshop on Genetics of Bark Beetles and Associated Micro-Organisms. But occasionally I stumbled across a gem. Rummaging through a bin of discarded books one day, I saw an unusual spine: "CHENEY The Evolution of Presidential War Powers 1988."

In 1988, while Dick Cheney was Wyoming's sole representative in the House of Representatives, his daughter's senior thesis was quietly published in Colorado Springs. The 125-page treatise argued that, constitutionally and historically, presidents have virtually unchecked powers in war. Thirteen years before her father became vice president, she had symbolically authored the first legal memorandum of the Bush administration, laying out the same arguments that would eventually justify Guantanamo and extraordinary rendition, wiretapping of American citizens, and, broadly, the unitary theory of the executive that shaped the Bush presidency.

Behind every sleazy politician is another sleazy politician!

What an outrageous and corrupt path to follow: Find ways around the Laws and Regulations of the United States.

"America FIRST!" Why do they always look like they care and do the opposite.

Listen to Bush in 2002 (see videos below) providing the setup of the PONZI Scheme that lead to this Crisis in 2008. He sounds like the great HOPE of the poor and down-trodden when in fact he was laying the ground work to setup the GIANT PONZI Scheme using Housing Hyper-Inflation to wipe out America’s wealth for the benefit of the Rich Elite Bankers, who ended up caught in their OWN GREED-DRIVEN TRAP. He was even driving Fannie/Freddie to help in the Setup and ruined them in the process.

Good Morning!!! My fellow Homo sapiens which means the species who is wise.
While our country is sinking into ruin and third world status one can just imagine those two macho fellows who caused it all riding off into the sunset never looking back. NOW THAT IS WHAT I CALL REAL MACHO MEN!!!

"and was eventually appointed as one of the chief diplomats for the Middle East in 2002." Schooled in neither the Middle East nor experienced and trained in the diplomatic service, she was the right pick for the job, right? Gotta hand it to Cheney, he sure knows how to manage a president and his SOS.

I have been there, and it is a beautiful State, but the Cheneys give Wyoming a bad name.

Cheney and his supporters, and WY has plenty of them, give WY a bad name. This was John Birch Society country, complete with billboards, for years. May still be. The unitary executive idea, how far is that from dictatorship?

Shouldn't it come as no surprise to anyone that the proverbial apple didn't fall far from the tree?

Children and parents don't have to agree on every issue. Patti Davis was the most vocal when disagreeing with her father. I wouldn't have carried it that far but she had underlying issues when she acted out. LOL.

If America were really and truly a "Christian Nation", it would not be in the business of making war on trumped up charges. But since it does, it's proof that America is no better than the "terrorists" it claims to be fighting, Christianity is no better than Islam, and that it just pays "lip service" to moral ideas.

mydog,

You have just insulted Islam. Clearly you know nothing about that religion but feel free to make such statement. Too bad.

Neo Cons and their comrades in the Military - Industrial Complex really did a number on the Republic. They began spying on us almost immediately after the 2000Coup, because the enemy was we the people. The C.I.A. would now be under military, not civilian leadership-clear manifestations of a nation occupied. The Patriot Acts and Military Commissions Act were violent end-arounds, the Constitution and our freedom be damned.

I've a feeling Tenet truly earned his Medal of Freedom. Bush probably already knew he was screwed before he and Cheney were interviewed by Fitzgerald. We came very close to a permanent dictatorship, fellow Americans.

Thank you preemptively, Colin Powell, and for the fifth or sixth time, Valerie Plame Wison, for your full-tilt patriotism and bravery. I hope that one day each and every American including the Republican leadership will thank them for the deepest of reasons and understand why in full measure they had to protect the Constitution and country.

So a Neo Con's dream realized through crime became the nightmare of the New Millennium with the help of unplugged zealotry from all corners of conservative spectrum. It really made me think about the P.N.A.C. and those who endorsed it.

Again.

"...oh the webs we weave..."

Clearly Elizabeth Cheney was influenced and tutored by her father on this thesis.

Evil actions have a propensity towards being illusive. Add to these illusive dysfunctional actions shrouded in secrecy the element of power and privilege and there we have a perfect recipe for a society that finds itself in dire straights.

"It is no measure of health to be well adjusted to a profoundly sick society."
