RNC Elections: A Fun Fact
So, at the Republican National Committee Leadership Elections, Michael Steele has prevailed in his bid to become the new chairman. The RNC is currently voting to decide who will be their Co-Chair. As they set up the Co-Chair vote, it was mentioned that the Co-Chair, by rule, had to be of the opposite sex of the Chairman. (Jan Larimer, one of the Co-Chair candidates is pictured.) I was certain that I had misheard -- it seemed to be such an odd rule for a party that so steadfastly decries such examples of "political correctness." But, as it turns out, you learn something new every day! The opposite-sex rule is a tradition that began in 1937 when Marion E. Martin was "named the first assistant chairman of the Republican National Committee," and not, as I had initially assumed, as a stop-gap measure to ensure that the RNC could repopulate the Republican party in the event of global calamity. Ah, well. Drill, baby, drill!
