WASHINGTON — Samantha Power, the Harvard University professor and Pulitzer Prize-winning author who earned notoriety for calling Hillary Rodham Clinton a "monster" while working to elect Barack Obama president, will take a senior foreign policy job at the White House, The Associated Press has learned.

Officials familiar with the decision say Obama has tapped Power to be senior director for multilateral affairs at the National Security Council, a job that will require close contact and potential travel with Clinton, who is now secretary of state. NSC staffers often accompany the secretary of state on foreign trips.

The officials spoke on condition of anonymity because Power's position, as well as that of other senior NSC positions, have not yet been announced. One official said the announcements would be made in the near future.

White House officials would not provide details of Power's new role.

Power was an early and ardent Obama supporter until the "monster" comment forced her off his campaign, but she was rehabilitated after the election when she made a gesture to apologize to Clinton and was included in the transition teams for both the State Department and the U.S. mission to the United Nations.

At the time, an official close to the transition said Power's "gesture to bury the hatchet" with Clinton had been well-received. Power and Clinton have met at least once since Clinton's confirmation last week when they both appeared at a State Department ceremony at which Obama announced the appointment of special envoys to South Asia and the Middle East.

Reporters at the event saw Power and Clinton chat briefly at the end, although the conversation was inaudible.

Power, a noted human rights expert who won the Pulitzer for her 2008 book "Chasing the Flame: Sergio Vieira de Mello and the Fight to Save the World" about the late U.N. diplomat, made headlines last March during the height of the fierce fight for the Democratic presidential nomination when she called Clinton "a monster" in an interview with a Scottish newspaper. Her remarks set off angry exchanges about the tenor of Obama's campaign.

Power told the Scotsman newspaper that Clinton would stop at nothing to defeat Obama. "She is a monster, too," Power said in the interview. "She is stooping to anything." Power added that "the amount of deceit she has put forward is really unattractive."

A few hours after her comments were published, Power announced her resignation, saying the remarks were inexcusable and contradictory to her admiration for Clinton.

She said Obama had rebuked her for the comment and "made it absolutely clear that we just couldn't make comments like this in his campaign."

Clinton's campaign seized on the remark, sending an e-mail to supporters telling them about the "monster" comment and asking for contributions to "show the Obama campaign that there is a price to this kind of attack politics."

There is a mistake here: Samantha Power did not win the 2008 Pulitzer Prize for "Chasing the Flame: Sergio Vieira de Mello and the Fight to Save the World." She won the 2003 Pulitzer Prize for "A Problem From Hell: America and the Age of Genocide." A brilliant book, by the way. I highly recommend it.

I agree that Ms. Power is back where she should be. She is a brilliant person; the kind that will help President Obama.

"Power told the Scotsman newspaper that Clinton would stop at nothing to defeat Obama. "She is a monster, too," Power said in the interview. "She is stooping to anything." Power added that "the amount of deceit she has put forward is really unattractive." It's no wonder that Samantha Power was roundly criticized in Washington for that statement. They must have been shocked that anyone would be so tactless as to tell the truth.

HC ran a ruthless and unprincipled campaign which, in the end, served to season Senator Obama for the relatively light-weight attacks by relatively light-weight Republicans. That does not change the fact that her attacks were slanderous and sleazy or that she engaged in race-baiting in backward places. I don't care if you love Hillary or hate her; you are entitled to your own opinion; you are not entitled to your own facts. Those are facts.

If you want to see just how ugly and unjust HC's attacks on Senator Obama were, go read the wing-nut blogers. You will find those same lies repeated there as slanders against President Obama. They don't even make them up; they quote Hillary Clinton.

PS. I laughed when I saw the phone ringing ad, asking who would you want answering the red phone at four o'clock in the morning?" I thought it was a stealth ad for Senator McCain, remember, that was before John McCain deconstructed.

"Facts" - ROFL!!!!

Try a freshman level logic course. Might help you make the distinction between "facts" and conclusory judgments. It's probably overkill, so if you don't want to spend the time/money, just ask a 6th grader.

They should be able to help you.

Ah! The things that are said in the heat of battle... when sometimes tact gets lost if the scuffle:

"Tact is the unsaid part of what you are thinking. Tactlessness is the unthought (thoughless) part of what you are saying."

I'm a big fan of Samantha Powers and I'm starting to warm up to Hillary, too.

Samantha Power won the Pulitzer for her book on governments' responses to genocides which is called something like A PROBLEM FROM HELL. I am not sure when it was published, and also am not sure whether or not she won the prize for her book on de Mello. Sorry, can't resist a little fact checking.

Good move, President Obama. She is a knowledgeable and capable woman and you most certainly will be relying on her advice. I'm glad she didn't drop off the radar screen.

1. This discussion is about who Obama is hiring, not who is hiring him. How unobvious is that?

2. If you've forgotten, the electoral body of the U.S. has already hired him for being such a great party planner. Sorry you're not enjoying it.

Yes, but this isn't a party. I know that some of the most productive relationships in my life have been with people who I wouldn't choose to party with... even with some I wouldn't bring home. As long as people respect each other and believe that it's important, on a daily basis, to earn that mutual respect, they don't even have to like each other.

We have serious work to do. Everything really important in our world has been neglected for eight years... neglected or worse for eight years or longer. Anyone who recognizes the gravity of the holes we have dug for ourselves, would be willing to stop digging and begin filling. I hope President Obama is inviting grown-ups; it certainly looks like he is... we'll see.

The funny thing is that under Article 1, Section 6 of the Constitution, Hillary is ineligible to serve as Secretary of State.

"No Senator or Representative shall, during the Time for which he was elected, be appointed to any civil Office under the Authority of the United States, which shall have been created, or the Emoluments whereof shall have been encreased during such time.”

Nonsense. Lots of Senators and Reps have been appointed to posts in every presidential administration since the Founders. It's a non-issue.

Hillary Rodham Clinton IS the Secretary of State of the United States of America.

Don't like it? Too bad, so sad. Moving on....

She embarrassed then-candidate Obama to such an extent that he had to fire her.

She called her own words inexcusable - and rightly so.

If she keeps herself together - no worries. I have no issue with her being one of the many White House advisers to the President. Her perspective on Human Rights is worthwhile, if imperfect, and deserves to be heard along with all the other views.

Should she decide to lose control and mouth off again, she'll be fired again and will not be given a third chance. Good luck to her.

She's gone for using the word "monster" in an interview that was public. Boo-hoo. These people, like all of us, say far worse things about each other than that. One word, that’s it. She could have very easily made the same point without using the word monster, and all would’ve been o.k. The word police at it.

Or maybe Frankenstein, Dracula, and the Wolfman were insulted being compared to Hillary.

Hillary was a monster.

It was a bogus "had to resign" thing to keep up appearances. Empty.

No one gave 2 cents about except that the press wouldn't have given up on it and Hillary supporters shed crocodile tears to make Obama look like a bad guy.

My favorite Hillary line was the one about MLK being ineffectual without LBJ's help... ok, maybe " a monster" was overstating it slightly. Powers is brilliant AND gorgeous.

My favorite part was where Hillary's vote on the war and foreign policy judgement was a "big" campaign issue, but was later she given the job as Secretary of State... no point in rehashing these old battles. HIstory is replete with examples of people who fought each other during election, but came together to govern.

Her name is Power, not Powers.

And as Bill Moyers pointed out in his commentary, the MLK/LBJ/HRC story was a phony controversy trumped up by the media:

The media trumped it up by Hill and Bill going on about how Obama was playing the Race Card.

I heard the statement Live(on TV) when she said and thought.... "why is she talking about MLK and LBJ in New Hampshire, why those two"...

The analogy she was making is the Obama was only good in Oratory like MLK but only LBJ was able to turn those sentiments in to action.

Obama -------- > just a MLK
Hillary------------> the great LBJ.

I was pissed instantly !
