I Like ItI Don’t Like It

TAMPA, Fla. — Nick Lachey is defending ex-wife Jessica Simpson, who has been criticized for an apparent weight gain.

Photos of a curvier Simpson performing last week in Florida have been plastered all over the Internet, leading to a slew of nasty comments about her weight.

Lachey, who was divorced from Simpson in 2006 after four years of marriage, defended her when asked about the criticism Friday night at a Super Bowl party he co-hosted with NASCAR driver Jimmie Johnson.

"I think it's ridiculous that the media is making such a big deal about it," he said at his Super Skins Celebrity Golf Classic party. "It's ridiculous that it would be making headlines. But you can't believe everything that's written or reported in the media. I wish her nothing but happiness."

The New York Post ran an editorial cartoon mocking Simpson, and Saturday ran a photo of her performing Thursday night in Charlottesville, Va., wearing a black leather ensemble. The Post described the outfit as a "waist-length jacket over her skin-tight pants and wide belt."

Lachey joined a growing list of celebrities in defense of Simpson that includes super model Heidi Klum, curvy reality TV star Kim Kardashian and Simpson's sister, Ashlee Simpson-Wentz.

"I am completely disgusted by the headlines concerning my sister's weight," Ashlee wrote on her blog this week. "A week after the inauguration and with such a feeling of hope in the air for our country, I find it completely embarrassing and belittling to all women to read about a woman's weight or figure.

"All women come in different shapes, sizes, and forms and just because you're a celebrity, there shouldn't be a different standard."

I don't think that her weight should matter to anyone (maybe Tony Romo) other than Jessica.

Jessica Simpson gaining weight is news? Geesh, it appears this only applies to women. It appears what with all of the concern for obesity that talk like this, which reminds me of grade school bullying, does not help matters!

I find it interesting that all of our society's concern surrounds obesity, and not the unhealthy views towards food and the body that create it. Perhaps if more women thought of food as nourishment rather than as the enemy, and thought of their bodies as part of them rather than as territorry to be conquered, we'd be in a better place in terms of weight. We'd certainly eat more fruits and veggies.

The problem is that she was packaged as a sex symbol. Not just a singer or entertainer, They (her father) used her good looks to promote her voice, so any change in her appearance is going to warrant comments. Of course they are ridiculous but it's par for the course.

So, what do you think of Olbermann not coloring his hair and letting the grey show?

Could it be the Anderson Cooper effect?

She may be a ditz but bashing anyone over weight and their bodies is just juvenile. Didn't we al get past this in grade school? If anything, (ok, I have never liked her) this shows she's a real person who actually eats. Leave her alone about this one. Make fun of her IQ, but leave her wieight alone. And no, I am not big. I am a whole 102, I just think it's stupid for people to always focus on physical rather than the more important things.

A couple of years ago, Jessica came out with one of the best lines I ever heard on a talk show. Even if it was scripted, her delivery was tops.
Letterman for some reason brought up the topic of women wearing sexy underwear.
"I don't see the point of sexy underwear", said Jessica "when you already know the result"
Gotta love that gal!

Ok, that's funny. I don't like her but I don't agree with being mean over her weight. But that comment was funny.

Yes, it's natural? and very unhealthy, that is why we are the fattest nation, No one care's anymore, and just enable's everyone else, If you agin even 10lbs more when your out of Highschool your risk of breast cancer almost double's not to mention woman with too much belly fat risk other health isssue's , if you measure more than 37 inche's around your bellybutton start to finish, you might want to consider yourself unhealthy, that is for a woman, not a man

"Full-figured," in reference to people like Jessica Simpson, is not a health problem. In fact, scientists are discovering that overweight (again, not Simpson's problem) in and of itself may not be a risk factor. Overweight may simply be a proxy for the real risk factors of underexercise and poor nutrition. In one study, overweight people who exercised regularly were healthier than "healthy" weight people who did not. And the rate of eating disorders in this country is staggering. Perhaps all these issues are symptomatic of a bigger problem in how we as a culture think about food and our (especially women's) bodies.

"full figured" is not synonymous with unhealthy. Full-figured usually refers to women who are more hourglass shaped and less straight up and down. A full-figured woman with a pear shape can be much more healthy than a thinner woman. It's about muscle vs. fat and cardio-vascular health - which you can't always detect with the naked eye.

Your post isn't very 'progressive'.

Additionally, Jessica put on maybe a few pounds - 10 at the most. That doesn't make her anywhere near fat.

America does have a high obesity rate, but comments like this really don't help. You can't bully and demean people into becoming thinner.

And I really need to see a reference for what you posted about gaining 10 pounds out of high school increasing your risk of breast cancer. Based on your poor grammar and spelling, I simply can't trust you as a reliable source.

Newsflash: Jessica Simpson is a real person.

She actually looks more like an average woman now than she did before, which is nothing to be ashamed of. Going from a size 6 to a size 10 doesn't make you a cow. It makes you normal.

Guys might like to look at super skinny women but they look to hold the ones who don't disappear in their arms, if we're really going to be honest about weight.

Long ago (or maybe NOT too long ago) men liked larger women because their figures showed wealth (I can afford to eat!) and childbearing prospects (fuller body is more capacble of bearing fruit that a skeleton). So what the heck happened. Of course, back then I'd be shunned, but the metality of earlier thinking makes more sense. Then again, we have more junk food now. Gah!

People see "normal" people at the mall for free. The Jessica Simpson image is a product, a celebrity, and has gained more than "normacy". She's gained a lotta weight! Try selling "average".

You know what? I don't love Jessica Simpson. I don't think she's that fantastic at all. But anyone, anywhere who is actually "offended" with her weight to the point of abject criticism is the person with the disorder. That's right, "DISORDER", as in: INSANE, PSYCHOLOGICALLY DEFUNCT, OUT-OF-THEIR-MIND. I don't think their is a red-blooded, heterosexual male that would look at her curves and say, "Ewwww." If so, they're the ones with the problem. I happen to think she looks great. The only reason... THE ONLY REASON... anyone cares about her current appearance is she is a celebrity a lot of people happen to dislike because of her public life. Certainly, she doesn't seem very bright. Fine. Then, say you don't care for her as a person (albeit, you don't know her) or say you would want to be with someone more intellectually stimulating. But a grown-up, an adult, or even just a decent person, doesn't go off on another person because of their weight. That is an obscene and IMMORAL thing to do. At that point, you need to look yourself in the mirror and wonder where and when you severed your conscience to become so vain, SELF-RIGHTEOUS, and intolerant.
