TAMPA, Fla. — One was a 12-minute party, the other a 2-minute proclamation. Bruce Springsteen and Jennifer Hudson used the Super Bowl stage for two very different performances Sunday night: he proved he's still The Boss with an electric halftime show, while Hudson showed she's ready to return to the spotlight after the slayings of three family members.

Springsteen and his E Street Band had turned down numerous invitations to play the halftime show, declining the high-profile time slot because it was a bit beneath them.

Then the show slowly started to draw legitimate acts _ U2, The Rolling Stones, Tom Petty and The Heartbreakers, to name a few _ and Springsteen changed his view of performing in the middle of a football game.

He promised a 12-minute party, and more than delivered by charming the estimated 100 million television viewers with his opening line: "I want you to put the chicken fingers down and turn your television all the way up."

Springsteen then threw himself into his four-song set, a highly anticipated series of songs that had Las Vegas oddsmakers taking bets on which tunes he'd select. He opened with "Tenth Avenue Freeze-Out," and worked in one of his trademark across-the-stage knee slides.

The move wasn't without risk: He slid into one of the on-stage cameras, and seemed to be winded when he transitioned into "Born to Run."

Next up was his newest piece, "Working on a Dream," which was backed by a choir. He then closed out with a playful version of "Glory Days" that fittingly altered the lyrics to fit the occasion: Springsteen's old high school buddy was "a big football player" instead of "baseball," and threw a "Hail Mary" instead of a "speed ball."

He and guitarist Steven Van Zandt then toyed with the crowd as the show came to an end, looking at their watches as the clock wound down. Worried they were about to hit "penalty time," (a referee even raced out and threw a yellow flag), they closed it out right on time.

"I'm going to Disneyland!" the 59-year-old rocker shouted at the end.

It was a completely different energy than the one offered two hours earlier by Hudson, who made her first public appearance since the October slayings in Chicago of her mother, brother and 7-year-old nephew. Her estranged brother-in-law has been charged in the killings.

Wearing a flowing white top with black leggings and a military-style dark jacket, the 27-year-old singer/actress looked apprehensive and took a deep breath before launching into the anthem.

Hudson, who clocked in at 2 minutes, 13 seconds, looked relieved when she was through.

When she returned to her dressing room, she anxiously asked pre-game show producer Rickey Minor "How did I do?"

"I told her 'Touchdown!'" Minor told The Associated Press after the performance.

"This was such an important performance, because it's the first time everyone has seen Jennifer. But she's in such a great place, with such great spirits and time can heal her wounds. She's on fire right now and totally grounded."

Minor, the music director for American Idol, has produced numerous Super Bowl pre-game performances, including Whitney Houston's 1991 anthem in Tampa that's considered the benchmark for singers. He said Hudson's two cell phones lit up "like slot machines" following her performance, and she received a moving text message from Jamie Foxx, her co-star in "Dreamgirls."

"His text said 'Amazing. It brought tears to my eyes,'" Minor said. "She's just getting so much love."

Although entertainers can perform live, Minor insisted that Hudson and Faith Hill, who sang "America the Beautiful" before the national anthem, use the tracks the NFL requires them to submit a week before the game.

Hudson made her performance personal.

"She's from the church," Minor said. "So we wanted to give it a gospel feel, use a little organ, rhythm and really give it a feel that matched Jennifer. We wanted her to emote the lyrics and connect with the song."

Hudson's now expected to resume her active work schedule. Hudson, who won an Oscar for best supporting actress for her role in "Dreamgirls," is scheduled to perform at next week's Grammy Awards, and her new video for "If This Isn't Love" is set to debut the week of Feb. 9.

Honestly, I'd rather watch and listen to a "live" performance with all the flaws and glitches--but still in the moment of right then--than listen to a pre-recorded tune--regardless of how good the "performance" is.

Live music is one of the greatest gifts we as humans can experience. Reccordings are just documentations of what WAS a great moment.

I'd rather watch Billy do it with his aging voice and know that it is real--than listen to a recording.

And that doesn't mean I'm not sensitve to JH's recent events and how much she "overcame" to do this. I just don't know how much "overcoming" one must do to move one's mouth with no sound coming out.

For comparison, Billy Joel doing it last year.

"Live" but using autotune. Sounds horrible (and I blame the technology, not Joel), especially the second half with the high notes.

After that disaster, it wouldn't surprise me that they would insist on a recording and eliminate any possibility of something like that happening again.

Yea, its not a "performance" if you are not performing. What a sham.

I thought both Faith Hill and Jennifer Hudson were lip synching. I really don't know the point of anyone standing there if they aren't going to sing live. Maybe, it's just me.

Marvin Gaye's version is the best; and it wasn't pre-recorded.

Big shock, Idolers lypsync, old school rockers don't, and kick arse.

Bruce Springsteen was AWESOME! Watching that black choir rock out with him, brought a big smile to my face. Jennifer Hudson....beautiful! I was moved to tears as she performed, thinking about the loss of her family. The best Super Bowl in 30 yrs.

She did great. The National Anthems sung at the Superbowl are usually pre recorded. Whitney Houston's performance was also pre recorded. Big Deal. It was her voice and no amount of technology could make me sound like her.

Yes, if you want to sound like a MACHINE singing, sure.

There is, and it sounds horrible.

As much as I hate lip syncing, the "live" performance from Billy Joel last year with the heavy autotune was WAY more objectionable.

The anthem is a lousy tune that challenges nearly every singer who attempts it. That being said, it's probably not a good idea--in fact, a really stupid idea--to try to "perform" it as some kind of torch ballad. It's an 18th-century barroom tune, for chrissakes. Just get out there and race through it. Going fast helps. Trying to do a sensuous belt out is dumb.

its a 'lousy' tune....and you wonder why the right questions your patriotism

Favorite    Flag as abusive Posted 07:19 AM on 02/03/2009

Actually, from a musical standpoint, it's a pretty poor tune, and a really dumb choice for something intended for everyone to sing if for no other reason than the range is way beyond what most people can do, also making it impossible to pick a key where most of the audience can sing along.

Favorite    Flag as abusive Posted 12:06 PM on 02/03/2009

Go ahead, question my patriotism--but c'mon a song about a flag should not be a national anthem--not tomention that it glorifies war. Something like America The Beautiful is much more appropriate as a national anthem.

Regardless--lip synching is not cool. Sure it was a great "performance"--more acting than singing.

Did she lip synch or just use a backing track of the music while singing live?

It's the difference between seeing a live performance and seeing a music video. If you hype a live performance in your promotional ads, then it sure as hell had better be a live performance.

She sang to music tracks. This article is worse than unprofessional.

This article is worded confusingly, but it has been reported that it was lip syncing (or at least singing along with the recording).

That was her there live, wasn't it? It sure looked like her. And she was singing, wasn't she? It's just that the network was playing another track of her singing the day before. They claim they insisted and were going to play the track. They were paying.
Blame them.

People complaining about this have way to much time on their hands and probably complain about every trivial thing. Just trolls with nothing to do but rant.

She performed to a pre-recorded track - the vocals were hers along with the music. Same with Faith Hill, except I don't see many comments about Faith here. The pre-recorded tracks are to mitigate any issues with sound, equipment, etc., and is not used as a substitute. She was phenomenal, and did not have to stray from what she practiced.

Seems to me those who have never had to perform in such a venue have a lot to complain about.

Answer this for me - had she never used a track, and experienced crazy mic and equipment issues, would you have been complaining that she should have had a back-up track to help things along? What she did was ensure that not only was the Star Spangled Banner performed with dignity, but it was heard loud and clear.

The people complaining are too simple to realize how ridiculous they actually sound. Huffing and puffing over the National Anthem at the Super Bowl?? BWA HAHAHAHAHAHA!!! Talk about ANAL! Some of these clowns are acting like they had personal contracts with NBC that required a live performance! I wouldn't be surprised if some of these trolls tried to sue! LMAO

That was a little overboard. I mean did you really burst out with a maniacal "BWAHAHA" there? Sounds like you're the one being dramatic and overcompensating.

I have to agree - I can see why someone would be disappointed by lip syncing, but some reactions seem to be bordering on obsession.

"Answer this for me - had she never used a track, and experienced crazy mic and equipment issues, would you have been complaining that she should have had a back-up track to help things along?"

No!

You clearly are of the age where you are so used to lip-syncing or "back-up tracks to help things move along" that you don't even know what real live singing is like! Imperfect notes and all!

All the national anthem singers at the Superbowl, even Whitney used a pre-recorded track.

What kind of "crazy mic and equipment issues" are you even referring to? What is so much "crazier" about the same mic being used for the national anthem as has been used for every actual LIVE performance? There are a lot more variables with a full band like Bruce Springstein's and you didn't see him lip-synching.

and your question obviously backfires, because nobody would complain that she should've used a backing track if something went wrong. Nobody does that ever.

Favorite    Flag as abusive Posted 11:05 PM on 02/02/2009

It wasn't "performed." So there was no dignity.

I suppose you just watched the recorded highlights of the Super Bowl.
