This just in: Martha Washington was hot. Or at least hotter than we thought.
Our image of the mother of our country, vague and insubstantial as it is, is drawn from portraits painted after her death showing a frumpy, dumpy, plump old lady, a fussy jumble of needlework in her lap, wearing what could pass for a shower cap with pink sponge rollers rolled too tight underneath.

Cokie Roberts wrote a truly wonderful book named "Our Founding Mothers". If you haven't read it, you need to. IMHO George would have fell on his face without Martha.

All reports always describe Lincoln's wife as "crazy." Having lost most of her kids to death, I believe she cracked up.

I wasn't too impressed by the "computerized age-regressed portrait" commissioned by a bunch of historians "seeking to revamp the former first lady's fusty image." I was like, "Eh. That doesn't necessarily tell me what she was like."
