NEW YORK — Erykah Badu gave birth to a baby girl this weekend _ and twittered about the experience.

Universal Motown Records Group, the singer's record label, says the baby was born Sunday and both mother and daughter "are doing fine." The father is Badu's boyfriend, rapper Jay Electronica.

The couple blogged about the birth on the Twitter Web site. Badu said she had a home birth that lasted about five hours and that she didn't use painkillers.

Badu, whose real name is Erica Wright, has a son and a daughter from previous relationships.

She released her fourth full studio album, "New Amerykah, Part One (4th World War)," last year.

The father of the child tweeted it too. There was something sweet about it :)
To those who look down her for having 3 kids of 3 different men. She's expressed herself in a popular message board/website and stated that she chooses who to have children with, and that those 3 men are good fathers to her kids, she gets along very well with them and ultimately that's what matters. I think she feels very few people understand where she's coming from. She's quite unique in her own way...

Three children, each with a different father, none of whom she has married....in another world this is known as three baby, three baby daddy. This is not responsible behavior whether one is famous or not. Wake up, Erica.

it's not about who you have children with, it's about whether or not you can take care of them. irresponsibility is the inability to be responsible for yourself. there's a big difference when a 15yo in high school has one child or some mormon mom in the midwest spits out her 15th kid. These people have nothing but hard times ahead of them. Erykah Badu has the ability to manage her own situation. that's all that's important. judging her morals or behavior is irrelevant because i doubt anyone here is "holier than thou".

I'm going to have to disagree with jackie and anthony on this one...its not about being holier than thou its about setting a better example for our children. we live in a society of total disconnect from family...especially in the black community. so what she can take care of her children financially? you think those same fifteen year old don't grow and and continue having babies with men who don't think they are worthy to marry? Everyone is entitled to their oops baby but when is she going to demand more commitment out of these men for herself and her children...whats WRONG with having daddy married to mommy and living in the same home. How about teaching your new daughter that she is more than a vessel for babies? How about teaching her sons about committing to family. I like E but when is she going to stop

As long as she takes care of them, I don't care how many she has or with whom. And, by the way, this is no one's business but hers.

It her v@gina and her business! In most cases marriage is joke anyway, so to each his/her own.

Home births are great most of the time, if you don't mind taking the risk that you might be raising the village idiot. Although there are too many interventions done at hospitals, it is not uncommon for a low risk delivery to become high risk and neonatal resuscitation necessary. Most women who choose home delivery do it out of ignorance of potential bad outcomes and because of propaganda that, because it is done more 'naturally' at home, it's better. Today there are enough options, such as midwife deliveries in a hospital or birthing center setting, that choosing a home birth is really a narcissistic choice with little concern for the well-being of the the child.

Midwives are equipped and trained to do neonatal resuscitation. Frankly, the available research shows that, for a low risk pregnancy, a midwife-attended home birth is AT LEAST as safe as a hospital birth. A low-risk homebirth very, very rarely turns into anything that is too urgent to drive to the hospital. Most of the time, when a hospital birth turns into an emergency, things that are "standard procedure" in a hospital but not ever done at home bear a large part of the blame--inductions, enforced bad positioning of the mama, etc.
(And yes, I have had a homebirth--healthy boy, needed a little oxygen at birth, which the midwife gave him)
