Los Angeles Times:

It was 1974 when Jerry Brown ran for governor as a dashing 36-year-old reformer, the embodiment of change in Watergate's aftermath.

"I was the new spirit," Brown recalled. "That was my slogan."

No one would mistake Brown for a new spirit today. At 70, he occupies a prime spot among the elders of California politics. His career has spanned four decades, with three failed tries for the White House along his way up, down and back up the elective ranks.

California needs to seriously re-examine parts of Prop 13 that EXEMPT corporations from paying property taxes. This is a serious loophole.

As Forrest Gump might say, "AGIN?"

I met Jerry Brown when he was Governor, over a pool table in Little Tokyo at about 2:00 on a Saturday morning. I let him win (just kidding, actually he was pretty good; it's just that I've been shooting pool since I was about four years old!).

I ask you - how many big state governors do you know who go out to shoot pool at some dive in the wee hours, like a regular person? OK, I'm an old hippie, but I thought it was pretty cool.

As a Californian, I say welcome, Jerry Brown and the best of luck. No more republican governors for our state. They are the most toxic to the working people and have always sold us out to "big business" interests.

Jerry Brown was quite a good governor, and was unfortunately given a bad rap by the media. He
actually had to perform as a fiscal conservative, to get the state budget back in balance after
Reagan. As governor I didn't expect him to be an authority on mediteranean fruit flies, and it
certainly wasn't his fault that the release of sterile fruit flies turned out not to be so sterile. He was
also called a flip flopper on proposition 13, which he had advocated against, but as governor, he
was obligated to enforce the law, and did his best to mitigate the damage.
I wish him luck in the upcoming election.

yeah, well even my mom is a flip-flopper on prop 13-now that her property & mortgage fall under its guidelines. she was one of its most vocal opponents until she owned a house.

I opposed to orriginally too. But time passed, the economy changed, and without prop 13 the taxes would be so high I wouldn't be able to live in my 2-bed, 1 bath home.

The tag "moonbeam" was meant to be an insult when guys like Royko wrote about Brown.

Jerry's push to link schools and gov't building with satellite/microwave transmissions were ahead of his time.

Now it's common place for schools and gov't offices to be linked with fiber optics.

I'm a native Californian, born and raised. I saw first hand what Jerry Brown did for California after 8 years of Ronald "ketchup is a vegetable" Reagan.

I wasn't old enough to vote for Brown then. But I'll gladly vote for him now.

Honestly, these people don't know when to STOP! Feinstein, McCain, Brown...don't they get tired of it!!!

I appreciate that they want to serve, but please, let a new generation take over. (I am in the older one,..so don't get up in arms)

You can certainly contribute to society without running for public office. Just ask Al Gore.

True, but if it were between Newsom and Brown I would have to go with Brown. Newsom may be handsome, charming and young but he's a bit mouthy and needs to learn some finesse and temperance with politics.

Jerry,

If you run for governor and win, please don't close off in your ivory tower with your small entourage like you did as Mayor of Oakland. You need to come from behind the doors and engage Californians in real solutions for our cities. Be bold!

Governing in isolation does not work and never will.

Jerry, you have my vote. Oh wait, I don't live in California any more. Well, I'm sure it will get better with Jerry back in charge and that meathead out of office.

And he will likely win too, because Californians have had enough of Schwarzenegger.

I jokingly said I would move to Minnesota just to vote for Al Franken..given that "tight margin of vote" fiasco, maybe I should have been more serious about it, eh? If Jerry Brown can again do for California what he once did as Governor?..I swear I would consider a move down home to California to vote for him, as well!

His potential competition isn't really stronger than Brown, pragmatically..but Villaraigosa is popular, as is Newsom, with each of their demographics (even given their scandal "affairs"). With the passage of Prop. 8, Newsom may have very strong "backlash against Prop. 8" support (or, conversely, very strong "backlash against Newsom" support, apparently..I don't get it, but obviously and alarmingly, some ~52% of (80% voting) Californians think they do)!

Any guesses on potential Republican candidates?..rumour has it, Carly Fiorina is one..YIKES!!
Should be interesting.....
