BOSTON — A lesbian couple who led the fight for gay marriage in Massachusetts has filed for divorce. Julie and Hillary Goodridge were among seven gay couples who filed a lawsuit that led to a court ruling making Massachusetts the first state to legalize same-sex marriages in 2004. The couple became the public face of the debate in the state and married the first day same-sex marriages became legal.

The divorce case was filed last week in Suffolk Probate and Family Court and was not unexpected. The couple announced they were separating in 2006.

Messages left for the Goodridges were not immediately returned Tuesday.

I tell ya, if you want to stop gay marriage in your state forget banning it. Ban gay divorce instead.

What's wrong with you? Well then again, they spent two decades together, then had an entire state change their laws for this "right," and in the end are now denouncing the "right" they fought to receive, but this isn't the point. Or is it? Regardless you are a bigot!

Ironically, without sarcasm, you are PRECISELY, correct.

Except for your mocking of the right by "-"'ing it.

What else do you think the Supreme Court got wrong, just out of curiosity?

A long time ago, a wise writer in The Advocate wrote (paraphrasing here) "the reason we need gay marriage is to codify gay divorce") and he's right! In the past, gay break-ups were like Islamic divorces ("I divorce thee!" repeated a total of 3 times) so it was difficult to equitably part -- especially if one of the partners felt wronged and/or in a "take as much as I can get" mood.

In my opinion, the case for gay marriage strongest leg is "equal protection under the law" -- and that, as lamentable as it may be, rests on being able to utilize the local civil judicial system in something other than a laughable "palimony" suit.

That's my $0.02 --

HALF of ALL straight marriages end in divorce.

Why should gay marriages be any different?????

For certain. It's the familiarity that breeds contempt.

Even though I do not begrudge my gay brothers and sisters the right to choose marriage as a viable option, I see that this points out that no matter where you are in your orientation, you will find that the institution of marriage is no golden pasture...that's why I will stay FAR and WIDE from it.

Gay or straight, we are all human beings, subject to human foibles. And all of our you-know-what stinks, too, just the same.
