I Like ItI Don’t Like It

February 5, 2009 (Los Angeles, CA)-- ENTERTAINMENT TONIGHT's THEA ANDREWS sat down with actor/comedian Andy Dick yesterday for his first sit-down interview since he emerged from rehab, to air tonight, February 5th.

Dick reveals details about his arrest last year, "I was out in the sticks at my friend's Dad's funeral. It was an Irish funeral and I kept the party going for days Andy-Dick style. When I drink I turn into a moron. I think I'm being funny and clever, but I look back on the video tape and I border on retardation. People see me as a very easy target and they just make fun of me. It's horrible, actually. It's like making fun of a mentally handicapped person, because I am when I have that much alcohol inside of me."

Dick was sentenced to three years of probation and is required to wear an ankle alcohol monitor for one year. He says if the monitor detects any kind of alcohol he will go "straight to jail." He goes on to say, "I didn't like it at first but now it's become my new best friend. If it wasn't for her (the device) I would probably already be drinking by now."

On his lowest point while drinking, Dick recalls, "Sitting in the back of the cop car urinating all over myself, crying, blowing my nose into my own shirt. It was incomprehensible demoralization. I also had in one day, my agent, my manager and my publicist say 'Sayonara!' That still didn't stop me."

Dick appears this season on VH1's "Sober House," which chronicles the dramatic, real-life experiences of celebrities trying to stay sober after leaving addiction treatment facilities. He tells ET he initially turned down the opportunity to appear on the show and explains why he later changed his mind, "My spiral into the purest of all hells has been very well documented, so why not get some professional cameras on me while you see my slow climb back up out of the gutter?"

He goes on to say, "The only person I trusted was Dr. Drew Pinksy. I've known him for 20 years so there's history and trust. If anyone was to help me, it would be him. And I don't know if I could look more of a fool than I already have."

I have met Andy. Sober, he is an intelligent, thoughtful, charming person and a comic genius to boot. Don't believe me: rent the first (and only!) season of The Ben Stiller Show. He is HILARIOUS! Try and find his mockumentary of The Apprentice called The Assistant (also aired on VH1). He is truly under-rated and his drinking and drugs have eroded his respect...of himself and from his peers. I wish him nothing but the best...he is suffering...acknowledges that he's made others suffer. Probably half the reason for doing the show is so that he can get insured on productions. C'mon, Stiller & Black...hire him!!

Did anyone pay attention to how Andy chastised the people who got loaded with him?:

"People see me as a very easy target and they just make fun of me. It's horrible, actually. It's like making fun of a mentally handicapped person, because I am when I have that much alcohol inside of me."

They made fun of him so he is their victim. AND he should never be taken advantage of when he has that much "alcohol inside of (him)." Gee, Andy, how did it get there? Did someone force-feed it to you?

This guy will not be clean and sober in six months because he clearly thinks his addiction is someone else's responsibility. In fact, I doubt he is clean and sober now. He is probably playing those "I'll only have one drink/line/hit/fix today" games with himself already. And running around with the same morons he used to drink and drug with pre-rehab. He's doomed.

Sober or drunk, Andy Dick still sucks as an actor/minor celebrity.

This picture sure says a lot. It is hard to believe it is the same guy. Surprising what a little healthy living can do for a person. Keep it up and perhaps try to find out what is inside that bothers you so much that makes you want to drink that much. It is more than just a physical addiction to alcohol I think.

Drunk or sober, you will continue to be a repulsive, narcissistic POS !

Repeat after me Andy: “Would you like to super size that order” ?

Wow, lot of negative comments.

Andy is apparently and sadly a severe alcoholic (and drug addict?) and it's decimated his life just as it does others -- except as a minor celebrity, his is documented by sensationalistic journalism that sells his behaviors as just "crazy Andy" and not the result of a serious illness. Of course if it's just "crazy Andy" then he deserves all the misery he gets.
No nuanced consideration here, of how perhaps alcohol / drugs were initially, in small amounts, conducive to a creative mind and his comedy (uhm, how many millenia have societies been drinking a few glasses of wine with dinner?). We might ask Robin Williams about his initial use of cocaine before it got out of control.

I'm rooting for Andy. He's made me laugh a lot with his comedic characters. And laughter is a good thing.

I'm rooting too. We should be supportive of people who are working to better themselves.

If that ankle thing helps keep him from drinking for a year, it may be enough time for him to practice self control once it's off. I hope.

I hope he can keep himself straight.

I can't think of anything worse than a guy at 43-years-old with the same drug and alcohol problem from when he was 23-years-old.

At least he isn't 63 and still using, and there are lots of people who die before they can quit. It is a serious disease and I hope he is able to stay focused on that show he is trying to get sober on.
