Supreme Court Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg has undergone surgery for pancreatic cancer, apparently at an early stage.

The court said the 75-year-old Ginsburg had the surgery Thursday at the Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center in New York. She will remain in the hospital for seven to 10 days, said her surgeon. Dr. Murray Brennan. This was according to a release issued by the court.

Ginsburg, a justice since 1993, had colon cancer earlier in her tenure.

The cancer was discovered during a routine, annual exam late last month at the National Institutes of Health in Bethesda, Md.

The court said a CAT scan revealed a tumor measuring about 1 centimeter across the center of the pancreas.

When you are one in a million, try to double up. Good luck Justice G and all her people.

Oh, I feel very sad. Justice Ginsberg was one of the few people that actually brought some sense to the Supreme Court. In no uncertain terms do I mean to slight Justice Gingsberg’s illness in any way whatsoever, but really, having to sit next to Robets, Alito, Scalia, and Thomas would surely make anyone sick.

Justice Ginsberg has served our country well. She understands the Constitution and the role of each citizen. If there is a living God, she will be received in the first ranks of heaven. One can only write such feeble words to express one's sorrow and concern and profound regards. "And the moving finger writes..."

She's not dead yet, for pity's sake. She beat cancer once.

I hope she lives and long life and serves many more years. I am a big Obama supporter. But I feel he is not ready for a Supreme Court appointment after he appointed a right-winger like Judd Gregg to Commerce. Obama needs to get the uncalled for bipartisanship out of his system. I did not vote for Obama for him to step away from his progressive roots an appoint Judd Gregg. I am afraid that he might appoint a right-wing justice to prove his "bipartisanship". It would be better if he does not get an opening in his current mood.

But getting Gregg out of the Senate gives us 60 seats there, once the new senator is appointed. I'd say it is worth it.

You must have missed the memo....the governor is going to fill the vacant Senate seat with another Republican.

No, he will only serve if the governor chooses another Republican to replace him, which he has been assured will happen. AND he's abstaining from voting for the stimulus plan which he supports, because of his appointment, AND he previously voted to abolish the department he will head. An all around lose/lose for the Democrats I'd say.

I don't follow your reasoning. The new senator is going to be another rep.

Back off dunderhead. Obama is a constitutional scholar and is more eminently qualified to make a Supreme Court appointment than any POTUS in the last 100 years (or more!). If you want more reasons why, just ask.

Ready? You don't think he's been considering this from the beginning? The Supreme Court was THE critical reason for voting for Obama.

I hope Justice Ginsberg recovers, but she's not young... Thank God McCain and Mooseburger were defeated.

Good point. He can't even select cabinet members.

And God bless Ginsburg. I'm sorry to hear about her health.

Based upon my unscientific & biased scan on HP's comments-prayer is the favored response. While atheism appeals to my sense of what is rational, I've been praying for Obama's saftey, good health & whatever is passing for wisdom & good luck this week. Yes, I hedge my bets. I wish Ms Justice Ginzburg fortitude in the coming hours, days, months & years.

The big study at Duke University on intercessory prayer found that patients for whom prayers were said suffered a slightly higher rate of post-surgical coronary complications than those for whom no prayers were made. (It was called Mantra I think and there were 2 of them.) But I wish her well too.

Ruth Ginsberg has been an excellent justice. Pancreatic cancer is fatal. May her last days be comfortable and peaceful.
