Supreme Court Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg has undergone surgery for pancreatic cancer, apparently at an early stage.

The court said the 75-year-old Ginsburg had the surgery Thursday at the Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center in New York. She will remain in the hospital for seven to 10 days, said her surgeon. Dr. Murray Brennan. This was according to a release issued by the court.

Ginsburg, a justice since 1993, had colon cancer earlier in her tenure.

The cancer was discovered during a routine, annual exam late last month at the National Institutes of Health in Bethesda, Md.

The court said a CAT scan revealed a tumor measuring about 1 centimeter across the center of the pancreas.

All the best to Justice Ginsburg, but Pancreatic cancer is not a good news diagnosis at all.

She should be commended for sticking it out on the bench until after the inauguration.

This is probably the nastiest cancer there is, both for recovery and pain while suffering.

She is a good woman, one of the best things that Clinton did. As we express our concern for her, President Obama, this is not the time for bi-partisanship. None of the judgeships are, they last too long.

The court currently has 7 out of 9 Republican appointees (4 appointed by Bushes alone). Bi-partisanship indeed has no place here except to redress the balance.

More importantly, here's hoping a great lady and great justice can weather this latest challenge.

If this is adenocarcinoma of the pancreas (the most common type by far), this is a very serious cancer with a poor prognosis, irrespective of treatment. If she were my mother, I would encourage her to retire and spend time with family and in other personal pursuits. Justice Ginsberg and her family may have other priorities, though, so whatever her decision is, I hope things go well for her, and I will remain grateful for her service to the American people.

Could this be the result of another Pat Robertson prayer circle for the deaths of Supreme Court Justices?

My ex is a survivor of pancreatic cancer and the surgery known as "the Whipple procedure" since May 2005. He complains a lot, but he's going strong. May Justice Ginsburg also experience that this is not automatically a 'death sentence'.
My wish for her is that she is able to heal and enjoy many more years doing all she wishes to do.
I suppose many of us thought instantly of the timing of this. I think Justice Ginsburg would most likely understand that thought. [I also secretly wish she could have been the one to swear Pres. Obama into office! She would not have (excuse me) IMHO pulled that "stunt".]
Best Wishes, Justice Ruth Ginsburg.

Don't worry. We've got Medicaid, the more expensive form of universal healthcare.

Hopefully, she's ok. I'm scared of which Republican Obama will nominate in her place with his spirit of bipartisanship and all.

Be serious, the situation merits it.
Obama did us a favor getting these guys out of the senate. Now the dems have control.
