Supreme Court Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg has undergone surgery for pancreatic cancer, apparently at an early stage.

The court said the 75-year-old Ginsburg had the surgery Thursday at the Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center in New York. She will remain in the hospital for seven to 10 days, said her surgeon. Dr. Murray Brennan. This was according to a release issued by the court.

Ginsburg, a justice since 1993, had colon cancer earlier in her tenure.

The cancer was discovered during a routine, annual exam late last month at the National Institutes of Health in Bethesda, Md.

The court said a CAT scan revealed a tumor measuring about 1 centimeter across the center of the pancreas.

Best wishes on a speedy recovery.

"All respect for the office of the presidency aside, I assumed that the obvious and unadulterated decline of freedom and constitutional sovereignty, not to mention the efforts to curb the power of judicial review, spoke for itself. "
-- Ruth Bader Ginsburg

My uncle died of pancreatic cancer. This is a terrible cancer. Nonetheless, I wish you the best Justice Ginsburg.

Best wishes Justice Ginsburg.

My dad had that specific cancer 30 years ago, it's terminal, I don't think even after 30 years they have come up with any kind of treatment that is lifesaving, or a way to live without your pancreas.
Stem cell research is needed immediately.

Thank God McCain isn't in the position to appoint another Scalia!

Cookie, while the mortality rate is extremely high, pancreatic cancer isn't always a death sentence. My best friend's brother had it several years ago and beat it. He was in his mid 50s at the time, and is now cancer-free for just over 4 years.

There are many inspiring stories of survival for anyone who wants to google 'pancreatic cancer survivors'.

For her excellent work in trying to bring sanity to this right wing stacked Supreme Court, we all owe her a great debt. Her room should be flooded with flowers showing our appreciation, but knowing her nature, she would probably ask that flowers or donations be sent to the less fortunate people hospitalized.

A moving tribute to Justice Ginsburg. Her diminutive physical stature and quiet demeanor do not reveal her giant intellectual and judicial stature, unrivalled in the Supreme Court.
Our prayers for her speedy recovery.

I agree she is a modest and decent person who has done excellent work behind the scenes under the most difficult of circumstances.

The scary part is the Colon Cancer previously, EP. That has such a crazy ability to metastasize that even with her excellent care, it is very troubling, especially at her age, the Chemo is sooo debilatating.

We shouldn't be debating a medical case we don't know the details of, but I have to disagree. Pancreatic cancer is often worse than metastasis from colon cancer.

True, but the weird thing about cancer is you just never know. My mother had Non-Hodgkins lymphoma at age 70 and not only beat it but is still going strong at the age of 83. I am sure Justice Ginsburg will be getting top-notch care, and my thoughts and prayers go out to her.

Pancreatic cancer is tough, I truly hope they caught it early. Get well soon Justice Ginsburg.
And President Obama, if you have to pick a replacement, quadruple check to make sure your nominee paid his or her taxes! I'm tired of listening to Republicans pretend to be morally outraged.

We need Justice Ginsberg's clear thinking and wise judgments.

Get well soon.

I did not read all of the comments, so I apologize if this has been expressed before, but why can't we all acknowledge the fact that routine checkups for all and preventive treatment for all is far less costly and results in better outcomes for everyone?

I personally don't care if its called single payer or what, but universal health care would be a great first step to leveling the economic playing field. Imagine how much easier it would be to hire employees if companies could be assured low, consistent costs for what is a large percentage of the overhead costs for hiring. Imagine if you could change jobs without worrying about upsetting your family's coverage (if you're lucky enough to have it).

They did find and treat her colon cancer early on. Pancreatic cancer is a sneaky b@st@rd. If they found it early in Justice Ginsberg, her outlook is better than most.
