Kellogg Customers More Concerned With Phelps Than Tainted Peanut Butter (AUDIO)

First Posted: 03/10/09 06:12 AM ET Updated: 05/25/11 02:05 PM ET

Michael Phelps

The Kellogg Company may have thought it was making the smart public-relations play by announcing it was not renewing its contract with Michael Phelps, the Olympic gold-medalist photographed taking a bong hit at a South Carolina party.

Kellogg customers, it turns out, are more interested in that decision than they are concerned about the ongoing peanut butter recall.

The Huffington Post placed a call to Kellogg Friday evening to find out more about their marijuana policies, and was greeted with this recording:

"Thank you for calling the Kellogg Company. If you would like to share your comments regarding our relationship with Michael Phelps, please press one to speak to a representative. If you're calling about the recent peanut butter recall, please press two now. Otherwise, press three or stay on the line. Thank you."

Listen here.

So far, three drug-policy reform groups - the National Organization for the Reform of Marijuana Laws, Students for Sensible Drug Policy and the Drug Policy Alliance - have all called for a boycott of Kellogg products until Phelps is rehired. The groups have encouraged their members to reach out to Kellogg to share their opinions.

UPDATE: No uprising would be complete without, of course, a FaceBook group.

UPDATE II: The Marijuana Policy Project is jumping into the boycott fray. "Our members are as angry about this as I've ever seen them. We've been besieged by emails and phone calls from people wanting to boycott Kellogg's over the stupidity and unfairness of its action, so we will indeed be joining a boycott. This is a company that didn't mind that Phelps had a conviction for drunk driving, an illegal act that could actually have killed someone. For them to dump him for relaxing with a substance that's far safer than beer -- less addictive, massively less toxic, and overwhelmingly less likely to make users violent or aggressive -- is reprehensible. While boycotts are notoriously hard to pull off, the consumers who have made marijuana the number one cash crop in America represent a silent force that may just have been awakened big-time," said spokesman Bruce Mirken.

Marijuana, although safer than beer, and wrongly categorized as a “schedule 1 drug”, has many more uses along with its cousin - HEMP.
I would ask everyone to join this fight from all aspects, including for its ability to effect soil degradation, deforestation and desertification (does not take up space for food!) –

For the United States - Send a letter to your Representative in the U.S. House and Senate urging him or her to consider introducing a bill, or an amendment to a bill, similar to H.R. 1009, the Industrial Hemp Farming Act of 2007. (Link provided below)

Note: when writing please remember to not only state why the marijuana plant is wrongly categorized as a “Schedule 1 drug” But also state why you believe Hemp should be allowed for industrial use as it is NOT MARIJUANA and does not hold the same supposed risks of the wrongly labeled “schedule 1 drug”, Marijuana. – Try to checkout the info below before writing.

Write them individually.

Please spread the word among other folks and other websites (not just those directed to Pro Hemp / Marijuana Advocates!)

Hemp produces more Biomass per acre than any other crop.
This would be the BEST crop to use for Cellulosic Ethanol.

In addition it can be used to make paper and save our forests.
Hemp seed oil can be used for bio-diesel and hemp seed flour is very nutritious and high in protein.

I like Michael Phelps. He's an incredibly talented swimmer. I rooted for him during the Beijing Olympics, and I will root for him at the London Olympics.

That said, Michael Phelps broke the law. Companies, understandably, don't like to have lawbreakers be the public face of their company. This will be good for Phelps; nothing could possibly be as effective in scaring him out of doing drugs as a canceled contract from Kelloggs, losing millions of dollars in the process.

While there are worse/more dangerous things that using marijuana, the law is still the law, and Phelps broke it. I hope he continues to bring home the Gold for the U.S.A., but he deserves any punishment he gets.

Marijuana is only illegal because of efforts by tobacco and liquor companies. It's documented, it's proven. It's disgusting.
07:45 AM on 02/10/2009
Actually that is incorrect. Marijuana became illegal due to the efforts of WR Hearst and the Dupont family and has more to do with hemp then it's drug effect. Around the same time a process for eaily mass producing hemp paper and clothing was developed, Hearst had made huge purchase of forests and his good buddy Dupont had just released his new miracle fiber nylon. Hemp production in the united states was a threat to that. They presssured washington which then elected another friend, Anslinger I believe who coined the term drug czar. Read Peter mcWilliams book "Aint Nobody's Business if You Do-The Absurdity of Consensual Crimes in a Free Society" for a more in depth look at the process of how we got here today. Cigarette companies are itching to start packaging marijuana and have reported they can be up and running within 3 weeks to a month. taxed to the same extent as tobacco it would raise anywhere from 13 to 41 BILLION dollars in revenue enough to pay for Obama's energy plan or 1/5 to 1/3 of his healthcare plan

Someday, this country may actually ditch the right wing phony christian morality and join the rest of the world in the 21st century....Naw, never happen.

Marijuana is illegal pretty much everywhere in the world, so changing our drug policy would hardly be "joining the rest of the world in the 21st century".

Also, the Bible says that God gave us "all the seed-bearing plants and herbs to use", so I don't think drug prohibition is a Christian policy.

My opinion is that we should lead the rest of the world by changing our drug policy. Maybe that's what you meant.

Add me to the boycott. Screw you Kelloggs, I never gave a rats rear end about peanut-butter, I still eat it by the jarful when I feel like it.

Actually, I see Phelps in a whole new light, he seems much cooler now. And isn't it amazing that a stoner could do so well in the Olympics? Really killed his motivation and concentration, didn't it.

Legalizing pot is way over due. Are we not hurting for tax money right now? State and local govt's running out of money? That ought to give the politicians the political cover they think they need to do the right thing.

I agree with the spirit of your post but come on... his motivation and concentration were not affect by you-know-what because (I'm certain) he didn't do it every day and he didn't do it while training or competing.

MJ is not physically addictive whatsoever and the mental/emotional addiction is extremely shortlived in the absence of MJ. No one goes to rob stores for money to get MJ. It's HARDLY addictive.

Here's what I don't get...Kellogs is the company that produces such snack foods as Keebler's and Famous Amos? The p0t smokers are their clientele for cryin' out loud! They should be promoting this!!

kellogs makes junk, phelps should be happy they dropped him. no kid will become a star athlete if s/he's raised on kellogs anyway.

How could Phelps win umpteen gold medals and be a pot smoker? Isn't he supposed to be unemployed, crazy, naked and wanting to kill something instead of being a huge success and all around nice guy. This is the conundrum facing the liars, thieves and morons who support and fund the war on drugs.
