Sunday night's Grammy Awards turned out boldfaced names from across the industry, from Paul McCartney to Lil Wayne to Neil Diamond to a heavily-pregnant M.I.A.

Other notables included some familiar faces from CBS (which aired the awards) like "Mentalist" Simon Baker.

A few supportive spouses also attended, like Nicole Kidman and Gwyneth Paltrow. Below are just some of the photos from the evening.

Read about the evening's winners here.

I bet none of these people have student loans payments.

I'm a tiny bit jealous.

Yes, it's so tacky for pregnant women to be seen in public. They shouldn't be able to leave the house.

I didn't watch the Grammys, but just came across this:

It's pretty sad when the death of a 12-time nominee and 1 time winner goes unnoticed.

RIP, LeRoi Moore. You were amazing, and sorely missed.

Sir Paul altered a photograph... AP is gonna sue!!

Favorite    Flag as abusive Posted 06:25 PM on 02/09/2009

Funny you should mention... because Lovely Linda took that famous picture! It was at the Sgt. Pepper release party at Brian Epstein's house, in 1967. Paul arrived clean-shaven, and caught John by surprise -- that's why John is giving the thumbs-up. For more, see the 1992 book, "Linda McCartney's Sixties: Portrait of an Era".

I love what Paul is saying with his fresh take on the image!

Does anyone else remember Jill Sobule's "I Kissed a Girl" from like 10 years ago? Is this new one supposed to be edgy? I feel like the popularity of this song speaks to how backwards into sexual repression the country has been going for the past 8 years.

Favorite    Flag as abusive Posted 04:50 PM on 02/09/2009

Hahaha - I was thinking the same thing when this song became so popular! Jill Sobule's was definitely much better, and catchier. She also did "Supermodel" - hilarious.

"I kissed a girl.... won't change the world, but I'm so glad I kissed a girl."

I wish all the Katie Perry fans would keep that mind - it's not exactly groundbreaking.

And so it goes. Katy Perry fans never heard of Jill Sobule. Remember that Bangles song "Hazy Shade of Winter"? And that Stones' song 'King Bee'?

Why does Coldplay get an award for the song they copied? Seems backwards. You'd think the suspicion of copying would be enough to have the grammy voters not vote for them.

Favorite    Flag as abusive Posted 04:23 PM on 02/09/2009

Why does Coldplay even get nominated? The album was/IS atrocious.
For the life of me, I can't figure out why they're even tolerated any longer. Oh wait...that's right....their lead singer is married to a movie star! So many opportunities to get prime photographs that could be sold for millions.
Seeing as music is about marketing now, rather then talent, that does make a bit of sense.

My 82-yr-old mother was watching a news show that reported the controversy over Coldplay's winning song. She said, "Do you know who those people are?" I replied, "You know who they are, too, Ma. Every time you see them on TV you say, 'Those people have on the same clothes they were wearing the last time I saw them.'" She immediately knew who I meant because she said, "Oh, yeah -- fake military uniforms." So maybe Coldplay's going after the geratric audience.

Taylor Swift, Miley Syrus, Jonas brothers just cannot sing. I wanted to watch the Grammies just to see what is generally happening, but it was so disappointing. Rapping is not music. It's very loud narrative, prose or poetry reading (at best). Instruments played in the background might be said to be music.

Music consists of "musical notes". A concept that is being forgotten.

Rappers featured on the Grammys are talentless. It's major hype from record labels because very simply - it sells. It's not music to me. Rapping isn't elevating the earth's society to any new heights or art or culture or human awareness.

Those who can't sing will rap. Posture & preen, & dress up in gaudy outfits, grab their genitals on stage, yell about having sex with big butted women, have inflated egos, & think that they are "talented". It's not music. Just like taking a trash can lid & flaying it on concrete is not music. It's loud, it gets your attention, but it's not music.

Other notes:
Katy Perry can't dance or move on stage & totally relies on her looks & costuming. Her song's lyrics are totally banal. Isn't there something in George Orwell's "1982" about society being addicted to tunes that had no substance or merit? Hoping she disappears from the radar.

Kid Rock has a wonderful grittiness in his voice that you can feel. If he chose his material well, he could be the working man's voice.

Love Robert Plant & Allison Krause. Have their duo album. It's fabulous.

Disappointing to watch the Grammy's & listen to the crap that is being spoon fed to all our youth in the

"It's not music to me."

luckily YOU are not the arbiter of what is and is not music. and not for nothin' but your rant sounds vaguely racist to boot.

yeah, orwell's 1982. try again.

Favorite    Flag as abusive Posted 02:43 PM on 02/09/2009

Ooops - sorry - typo on "1984". Typing too fast. I thought, what is he talking about...1982???

Racist???? I have lots of close friends who are African-American & Asian & Hispanic. And I voted for Obama. I live in San Francisco. Hey, I have gay friends, too. Ok? And I'm not a conservative. I'm a liberal ex-hippie who is an artist. But crap is just crap. That's what it is.

Intelligence & culture & singing with real musical notes about things with substance are not a "white fixture".

You can be intelligent & cultured & be of any race. Correct?

Wanting high standards & ethics are not "racist".

In fact, your comment's are racist because it predisposes that all rappers are black.

Pretty soon they'll be rapping about defecating & urinating and you'll think that's music too because the record companies are selling it & you saw it on TV.

ElyseF,

Why couldn't you just simply say I don't like rap music it's not for me. As opposed to being rude and rather cruel in your comments about rap artist and their work. I am going to take a guess that you really don't know much about rap given your comment, but still just say you don't like it and move on.

I agree. I don't buy it myself, but I can easily see how and why it speaks to a huge audience and I think it adds value to our culture. I'm also interested in the fact that the more rap grows, the more musical it becomes. Much more melody and complexity there than it used to have. Quality musicians have been drawn to what WAS basically a branch of poetry. Now, I don't know how anyone could say it's not music.

"Music consists of "musical notes". A concept that is being forgotten"

While I agree with you on going beyond the spoon fed and that there are too many entertainers that rely on the trappings, and not music and art, I feel you definition of music is too narrow. I and many other musicians also recognize other elements like rhythm, tempo, timbre, dynamics, etc. that define music and its art form. While there is a lot of mediocre material out there, in *all* genres (including hip-hop), there is also a lot of good stuff, too. While hip-hop isn't my go-to genre, I've heard some impressive stuff over the years that display tremendous artistry and musicianship in terms of rhythm, lyrics, arrangement, etc. Music evolves and music resonates culturally and individually. It's how Robert Plant and Led Zepplin have touched many fans (and they were dismissed as junk by many non-rock folks) and it's how things keep moving along.

I found it shocking how the people receiving lifetime achievement awards were (except in one case) completely glossed over - Queen Latifah's weird segue about Dean Martin, as an example - WTF? And how is it that B.B. King was part of the tribute and they didn't even mention his name? Unbelievable, there is the King of Blues and he gets not one mention or word after the song. I have to say I thought that was really disrespectful.
