I Like ItI Don’t Like It

The Los Angeles Times went where other news organizations would not: it identified pop singer Rihanna as Chris Brown's alleged assault victim:

R&B singer Chris Brown has been booked tonight on suspicion of making felony criminal threats in connection with an incident involving his girlfriend, pop singer Rihanna, according to Los Angeles Police Department sources familiar with the case.

"Who says we need journalism's old rules?" asked Jossip's David Hauslaib, referring to the journalistic convention of protecting victims' privacy by not printing their names.

Indeed, every other major publication referred to Brown's alleged victim as an unidentified woman, allowing readers to make their own conclusions that his girlfriend, Rihanna, was the victim of his alleged assault.

But the Los Angeles Times decided to run Rihanna's name — despite the LAPD's refusal to confirm her identity, citing state laws meant to protect abuse victims' privacy.

The story's author, LAT reporter Andrew Blankstein, told me by phone Monday that the public nature of the case made it "fair game" to report her name.

"The Times has a blanket policy when it comes to not naming victims of sexual assault," he said. "There isn't a set policy when it comes to physical assault or a criminal threat. In that case, there's a decision internally and on a case-by-case basis of whether to name somebody. In this case, obviously there was a discussion among the editors about this. The nature of this case — against the backdrop of the Grammy's, the delay in changing things, the explanations put out by both camps — the decision was made that this was fair game."

Blankstein's comments were reiterated by the newspaper's Readers' Rep, Jamie Gold.

"The Times chooses to follow an established, non-binding practice on sexual assault victims in which The Times does not identify them by name," she said in an e-mail. "But that is for sexual assault, which is not the case here."

And if this star were to seriously hurt herself further do to public humiliation....What would be the LA Times headline then?

that would be "due" not "do". And why would Rihanna injure herself because of media attention? I think she maybe has dealt with public attention before, just a possibility. Maybe you think she has undiagnosed clinical depression and being in the news, (not being assaulted by her boyfriend), causes her to injure herself?

Oh for heaven's sake, would you want a media extravaganza outside your front door if YOU were assaulted by a loved one?!

Have some SENSE!!

Apparently, you and Phnyx didn't get my comment.

All manners of abuse cause trauma. That super star deserves the same rights to privacy that you and I have. The media has no right to cause her further humiliation because she's famous.

Women as entertainment, even beaten and bloody. Since when has the press and other forms of media not employed violence against women as diversion and recreation.

You know what the difference is between the L.A. Times and the National Enquirer? The Enquirer has a larger circulation.

That's unfair. Chris Brown is the (alleged) criminal, not the legitimate news organization that reports the crimes he committed. Were we supposed to ignore Robert Blake or Phil Specter or OJ Simpson because the victims were women and/or the stories were salacious?

Violence against women can't be irradicated if we refuse to discuss it. Sunlight is still the best disinfectant. And, believe me, Rihanna's career is intact.

There is a very very good reason to not print victims names. Another journalistic low point.

Right on.

What is this reason?

Would this even be a discussion if she had done it to him? Or is gender not an issue here?

Do some research first. This is STANDARD. When there is no sexual assault, this information is usually if not always released.

Oh come one. Don't you know their sales will probably go way up in this day when it's tabloid journalism and sensationalism that sells newspapers. There's no integrity in the media especially in LA or where celebrities are concerned. Next we'll be seeing photos of the poor woman. I hope not but wouldn't be surprised.

Everybody crying "boycott LAT" should stop and think about what a newspapers's job is.They try to give the public accurate information they want before anyone. Journalists hate being scooped. TMZ right now is all over the story, talking about how Rihanna had bruises, bitten, and a busted lip. Is it fair to the LAT that everyone read about it on TMZ? I know it's a terrible tragedy for Rihanna but a newspaper makes money by selling papers with stories people will read. What If people only went to the internet to get their info, there would be a lot more misinformation. LAT has a high standard of verifiable evidence to print a story. If you're angry, be mad at Chris Brown... not the LAT. I'd rather support the LAT than TMZ... I'm just saying.

"They try to give the public accurate information they want before anyone."

Unless it's a video tape of a presidential candidate.

I'm going to maintain my current boycott of Rihanna. Although, in fairness, the boycott has nothing to do with this incident.

Well, in these times of dwindling newspaper subscriptions, I guess anything is fair game in order ot make another buck.

I should say there is fair game and then there is journalistic integrity. Something long forgotten in today's media.

FAIR GAME? A person becomes an less than, dehumanized their right to privacy invaded by a desperate publication and it's all justified by calling the person FAIR GAME? What happened to integrity in journalism?

Most real journalists left the business after Reagan deregulation let 5 big corporations buy up 95% of the media. It's all about profit.

Integrity? They can't make a buck with integrity, so that got tossed years ago.
