The wife of one of Saudi Arabia's richest men says she is ready to get behind the wheel as soon as the ban on women drivers is lifted.

Princess Amira al-Taweel, who is married to global tycoon Prince Alwaleed bin Talal, told the Saudi daily Al-Watan that she already drives when she travels abroad.

I have been to Pakistan and believe me, a lot of those girls under the burkas and chadors will put any of these so-called supermodels we look at all the time a run for their money. Their only drawback is that they do not speak a word of English and are not given a western education.

So the problem is with strange men looking at women but drivers are not under suspicion of looking at them when the hubby is away at work? Here the goal is superceded by the logic. If they want to lock the women away then they should have the guts to do it without compromise. There is nothing more pitiful than a liberal fundamentalist. Keep the hard line or change with the rest of the world. There is no middle of the road when it comes to extremism.

Mustafa Kemal Atatürk: “Human kind is made up of two sexes, women and men. Is it possible that a mass is improved by the improvement of only one part and the other part is ignored? Is it possible that if half of a mass is tied to earth with chains and the other half can soar into skies?”

It's interesting that this Turkish leader, about 100 years ago realized that his country would never advance if half the population was essentially enslaved and subjugated. Assuming a normal distribution of talent and intelligence across the sexes, this behavior effectively reduces a country's performance in the world by at least 50%. Apparently, this is a lesson that Saudi Arabia hasn't yet learned. They are a backward country with one foot firmly in the 19th century.

"THE" wife, or ONE OF the WIVES?

"Princess Amira al-Taweel, who is one global tycoon Prince Alwaleed bin Talal’s wives, told the Saudi daily Al-Watan that she already drives when she travels abroad."
http://digital-copper.info/princess-amira-al-taweel/

Note the slightly altered version in the "whole story" :
"Princess Amira al-Taweel, who is married to global tycoon Prince Alwaleed bin Talal, told the Saudi daily Al-Watan that she already drives when she travels abroad."
http://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/worldnews/article-1139703/Saudi-princess-speaks-support-lifting-countrys-ban-women-drivers.html?ITO=1490

And here's the ORIGINAL:
"RIYADH: The wife of one of Saudi Arabia''s most high profile and richest men said she''s ready to get behind the wheel if women are ever permitted to drive, highlighting again a contentious issue authorities in this conservative desert kingdom prefer to play down.
Princess Amira AlـTaweel, who is one global tycoon Prince Alwaleed bin Talal''s wives, told the Saudi daily AlـWatan that she already drives when she travels abroad."
http://alwatandaily.alwatan.com.kw/Default.aspx?MgDid=723030&pageId=471

Per wiki (yeah, yeah):
"his wives
Princess Dalal bint Saud bin Abdul Aziz Al Saud and the mother of his children divorced.
Princess Iman Bint Nasser Al-Sudairy absolute.
Khlood Alsrhaan
Princess Altweel"

Oh my! There is a reason why the burka was created, and this is an exquisite exception to the rule.

She's drop dead gorgeous.

A dead ringer for Bollywood star Aishwarya Rai.

Simply exquisite! This must be the reason why their men like to keep them out of the public eye. My husband and son went to India in December and they had the same impression, gorgeous women but very well guarded and covered from head to toe. Underneath the "tents", they wear gorgeous clothing.

At the risk of sounding like a Neanderthal, I am a totally modern woman but, there are times when I find modern women to have become vulgar and cheap looking in the way they dress. Nothing left to the imagination.

When you're the richest man in the world, you can buy your sweetie. Or her plastic surgery. Heck, the plastic surgeon himself for that matter. ;-)

what if? . . . her picture would not be flashing across the net, and we would not care if she drives a car or an ox cart.

And while you're at it, ditch the beekeeper suits too. You look way better without it.

Wowza.
When that lady starts driving in SA, I predict a dozen fender-benders a day!
Oh wait, she'll still have to wear a tent.

"as soon as the ban on women drivers is lifted"? But the story gives no idea of when that might be.

Yes it does.

"Women in Saudi Arabia have not been permitted to drive since the establishment of the state in 1932, but the government is set to lift its ban and issue a decree by the end of the year."
