I Like ItI Don’t Like It

When House Republicans voted unanimously against President Obama's stimulus package, Democrats had their eyes on a select group: Obama's Republicans.

Thirty-seven House Republicans currently represent districts that voted for Obama in the 2008 election, and Democrats are watching closely to see whether they support the man their constituents put in the White House or stick with the GOP line.

"We are looking at exactly that list of people," said Rep. Chris Van Hollen (D-Md.), the chairman of the Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee.

The media, though, spends more time looking at the list of Democrats in districts carried by Bush in 2004, as The American Prospect's Tim Fernholzwrote Monday. Meanwhile, no attention is paid to the Republicans currently in the reverse position. (Fernholz posted the full list.)

Republicans in those districts say that they won't be toeing the president's, but rather exercising the independence that got them elected in the first place. Democrats hope voters see that independence as a rejection of the president -- and do the same thing to these folks that they did to Republicans who represented districts that voted for John F. Kerry in 2004: throw them out.

Following Kerry's defeat, there were 18 Republicans representing districts that had gone for the Democrat. Two years later, that number was down to 15. Then came 2008.

"There are about six of those left in the country," Van Hollen guessed. Six is correct, though one of them is Rep. Joseph Cao, a Louisiana Republican who upset indicted Democrat William Jefferson and stands little chance of winning reelection in the overwhelmingly Democratic district.

At the same time, there are far fewer Democrats in red districts, meaning a more united -- and liberal -- House caucus. In 2004, 41 Democrats represented districts that Bush carried. When Democrats took control of Congress in 2006, they lifted that number to 61. When the ground hued blue in 2008, that number fell to 47 -- not because there are fewer Democrats around, but because Obama carried so many more districts. Conservative Democrats like North Carolina's Heath Shuler, as a result, have less of a defense when they buck the president.

The whittling of the GOP has meant that the remaining members are further to the right and easier for leadership to hold together. Last Tuesday, every single one of them voted against Obama's stimulus plan.

That included Rep. Steven LaTourette (R-Ohio), who represents an Obama district.

"Well, I'm not really in an Obama district," LaTourette sought to clarify. "By definition, it's a swing district."

LaTourette's people backed Bush in 2004. "And it didn't go to Obama by much, 50.6 percent or some such," LaTourette said (but who's counting?).

The night before the stimulus vote, LaTourette was invited to the White House to share his concerns about the bill. He said he finds Obama "personable" and "funny" and said that when he spoke to House Republicans he answered questions easily and straight-forwardly that most people couldn't have handled.

LaTourette stuck close to the president, contrasting him with House Democrats. "If this was President Obama's bill," he said, "I'd vote for it in a heartbeat."

Republicans in Obama districts are also less likely to be led by right-wing talk radio. "I'm not a Rush Limbaugh listener," said LaTourette, calling himself unfamiliar with the host's hope that Obama will fail as president.

"Whether you're a Republican or a Democrat," he said, "Why would you want the president of the United States to fail?"

Charlie Dent is a Republican who represents a Pennsylvania district that went for Obama. "I think people in my district expect me to work with the president. It doesn't mean we have to agree all the time," said Dent. "I don't feel any extra pressure."

Dent said that while many of his constituents back Obama, that doesn't mean they support every one of his positions. "There will be times when we agree and times when we disagree, and when we do, I hope we do it very civilly and respectfully," he said.

Mike Castle, as Delaware's lone congressman, has a relationship with Vice President Joe Biden and knows Chief of Staff Rahm Emanuel from his days in the House. "I certainly will listen to them, though not necessarily vote with them," said Castle. "In the case of Obama, I find him to be very effective and very persuasive."

Still, he said, "I don't shift much because of who is president."

Have Republicans considered what happens to them if this stimulus bill works? If 2010 or even latter 2009 features a recovering and robust economy with positive consumer confidence how will they square that with voters? Of course if that happens they'll argue that it was the tax cuts in the bill which magically caused the recovery.

The GOP is stuck in yesterday as in 1965. Their concept of the world, its economy and its vision of this country is devisivie and hypocritical in its very nature. Those that seek to continue pushing this country in a direction that is not benificial to America must be replaced. To vote no on a stimulus package just because you are not the party in control is not theorically sound reasoning to oppose everything just because you can. The one thing the new GOP leader said that is very true for some government jobs - they can be temporary. Its time to take a look at who may have been in DC on the peoples payroll far to long.

Today Coburn - the GREAT REPUBLICAN SENATOR admitted on CSPAN that the Corporations that he keeps giving taxbreaks to - DO NOT SHOW LOYALTY TO THE UNITED STATES and shift jobs to countries where they can make higher profits!!

Surprise Surprise - Isn't that what corporations are supposed to do SENATOR - they are not government agencies - their motives are higher profits.

I was surprised to hear him admit that - so why should we keep rewarding them Senator Coburn??

Some of the American People and these folks in Congress need to have Economics 101 explained to them -

The right wing Congress just keeps repeating and parroting the GOP talking points - it is getting a little stale and has destroyed our country's economy as a result.

Thanks to Specter, Collins and for putting the country first!

It's amazing the people we have who represent us. There's stupid, corrupt John McCain who graduated 894th in a class of 899 from Annapolis (below the bottom 1%). But somehow his opinion of "earmarks" and "pork" (exactly the kind of spending that is necessary to stimulate the economy with infrastructure and educational improvements, green jobs, etc.), means Obama is supporting massive ineffecive tax cuts -- one of the main reasons our economy has collapsed. Then there's Heath Shuler, a quarterback who threw more interceptions than touchdowns in his career, but who is now extending his football incompetence to economics and legislation by being of of 11 Democrats who voted against the House stimulus plan, the best of the three options (Senate, Obama's and House) if we actually care about improving the economy.

And let's not get started on Senators Jim Bunning and Hypocrite Vitter.

John McCain is a make believe maverick, the product of a never-ending stimulus package from (i) Cindy McCain (ii) the American taxpayer and (iii) Defense Contractors. McCain is a military industrial complex, war college brat, who’s family fortune was derived by marrying into a clan that makes money selling beer to the lower classes in America's Southwest while serving as a soul less shill for America's aristocratic classes in Congress and the Senate. The mainstream media props this guy up as the Republican common man, a regular guy, a war hero but make no mistake John McCain is the quintessential opportunist, a self made one at that! The GOP and folks like McCain, McConnell & Co. are the defenders of what Paul Krugman has called The Madoff Economy and they are battling Obama to perpetuate it while posturing as conservatively trying to protect the average citizen. John McCain is not a voice of reason, he is merely another lunatic standing aboard the Titanic trying to maintain the status quo with life boats for his friends, pushing bad ideas at a time of national crisis. While many Americans will end up homeless and bankrupt, John McCain can wax philosophic about his patriotism from one of his eight homes while his countrymen are in the streets.

It would seem to me a good move for an outside group supporting Obama should start a campaign challenging the Republicans who voted against the stimilus bill to turn down any monies from this package in their respecive districts.

It seems to me that people who stand up and make statements like they have should back up their rhetoric by rejecting any government assistance or in other words put their money where the mouths are.

When dems steal money from one group and give to another group, it won't help for them to then come along and say, well we ain't giving you any of the money we stole.

Oh, you mean like how Repubs stole from the working class to line their own pockets? I find it amusing that you only consider it "theft" if the money comes from the wealthy. Or I would, if it wasn't so wrongheaded and dangerous. Tax policy redistributes wealth. ALL tax policy. It's just a question of where it goes. Under Republicans, the wealth at the very top of the pyramid grew at the expense of everyone else, who's wages stayed the same or actually went down. How is THAT not theft?

If republicans vote "NO" on stimulus, then the republicans should "reject" their Billions for their state and give Republicans Billions to another state. More for them. And republicans who reject also the Billions for their state also do not have to pay on stimulus. Democrates in their states will suffer more, but oh well. Next election vote Democrate.

Vote all republicans out of office. Republicans are only "Party First" not "Country First". They are willing to let their own voters lose jobs, lose their homes all in the name of the GOP standing against our new President.

VOTE THEM OUT!

This may be a crisis that needs a lot of tweaking. The Congressmen will take the opportunity to talk with their constituents over the President's Day break. Depending on what they hear, they may return to Washington demanding more action and a bigger stimulus. There are tides in the affairs of humanity so that they may say what they will but what they say and what they said before will be indifferent to a tide that carries all before it.

We'll have to watch this. The President can still get his bipartisanship.

Well, I hope there is a slow go to the areas that are so solidly republican when it comes to handing out the jobs programs once the bill passes. Elkhart Indiana might be an exception as their mayor seems to be thinking about his community and the country ahead of his party affiliation. Surely, the gentleman who owns SunRise, Bill Keith, deserved to succeed as he is one business owner who puts his workers and his country ahead of his profits and he is a typical small businessman with great green ideas.

Bipartisanship is meaningless when a certain element of a party are intent on being obstructionist. Republicans are not worth sweat.

I say Amen Amen. All the republicans to do is stall and do nothing like they have for years. We Americans must tell them that it is not right to play games with peoples lively hood. They do not Obama to succeed so there going to what ever it take to drag there feet on every thing he goes at.They and Bush are the ones who got us in this mess.

I am sick of these people who all of a sudden "care about the inherent debt that my grand child will obtain" I think Obama should screw biparticianship and just go on with the plan. This is what I believe: The believe that the republicans and every body who is against the stimulus want it to fail ... Its an election year so if the stimulus fails they can say I told you so....

BUT MARK MY WORD!! THEY WILL WIN THE BATTLE AND LOSE THE WAR! PEOPLE ARE SICK OF THEIR CRAP ALONG WITH DEMOCRATS WHO HOLD UP PARTICIANSHIP TOO! PEOPLE CAN NOT PAY THEIR MORTAGE WITH AN IDEOLOGY PEOPLE CANNOT PUT FOOD ON THE TABLE WITH AN IDEALOLOGY

I heard all of these republican senators' all of sudden care about the American people ' I thought I was going to throw up.. give me a break I heard these same group of 'caring senators signing a bill along with then president George loosing regulations on credit lenders. When was the moxie then ?

"I think Obama should screw biparticianship" - These are not the words of an obama supporter. president obama has made it very clear that he will reach out to both parties. he never said it would be easy, but he knows it is the only way to move forward. it is difficult to understand how many who claim to support obama now want him to disregard one of his most important principles.

Obviously bipartisanship is worth preserving, unless one of the parties becomes so far adrift from reality that it's off playing party politics instead of helping out with an international emergency of massive proportions. The overwhelming consensus is that we need a three trillion dollar stimulus package to repair the infrastructure and institutions of our country and to attain the 5% growth we need if we are going to manage inflation, keep unemployment low and outgrow our debt.

The Republicans are terrified that all this money is going to be spent outside of their control.

They're just not getting it.

I am reminded of the scene in the movie Ghandi when in Solomon-like fashion, Ghandi suggests that a Hindu man, who had killed a Muslim child in retalition for the killing of his own son, adopt a Muslim child and raise the Muslim child in his Hindu home......

I am reminded of scene because time and again President Obama tries to lead by example how we are to embrace our enemies. We are to embrace that which we fear for it is the only way we can learn that neither we nor our enemies have anything to fear.

Bigots of a generation again voted for a black man to be President. They were able to do so because they came to understand that we have nothing to fear of our neighbors who look different. The time to stop divisive politics is now. "ENOUGH." President Obama has embraced the opportunity to lead a nation and possibly the world in a direction of love and caring.....by embracing and embarrassing his enemies.

Shuler is 100% wrong. To incorporate more trickle down into the bill for bi-partisanship betrays both the election and the economy. It's like asking your mother-in-law to move in to improve relations with your wife.

Heath Shuler is on his way out. The Dems here in North Carolina are watching him as well as Burr in the Senate. They are up for re-election in 2010 and there is a campaign to give them their walking papers. We voted for President Obama and his plans for this country. He can continue his own little fight with Nancy but he is there to represent NC, esp Asheville and Asheville wants him out. Shuler needs to start listening to us, not the Repubs and Politico.
